It was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won two, for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Frances McDormand), and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (The Coen Brothers). The film was nominated for six BAFTAs and Joel Coen won the David Lean award for Direction. Francis McDormand also won a Screen Actors' Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Leading Role. She married director Joel Coen in 1984.

On the American Film Institute's 2006 list "100 Years . . . 100 Heroes and Villains", the character Marge Gunderson ranks at number 33.

However, Tom Hanks later appeared in another movie directed by Frank Darabont, "The Green Mile", also based on a book written by Stephen King.

"The Silence of the Lambs" appears on several American Film Institute 2003 Lists including "100 Years . . . 100 Heroes and Villains" where Hannibal Lector rates as the number one villain and Clarice Starling as the number six hero, and "100 Years . . .100 Thrills" where it ranks at number five.

A sequel was released in 1998, titled "US Marshals", starring Tommy Lee Jones again as Samuel Gerard together with some of his team who appeared in "The Fugitive".

In a scene with the character Butch the boxer, played by Bruce Willis, you can see, written on the marquee, the words "Coolidge vs Wilson", a reference to two US Presidents. "Vossler vs Martinez" is also there, which is a reference to two old friends of Tarantino's whom he met when he worked in a video store. Tarantino turned down Daniel Day-Lewis, who wanted the role of Vincent Vega. Initially Uma Thurman turned down the role of Mia but was convinced to take the role by Tarantino.

There have been many theories put forward as to the actual glowing contents of the case carried by the Samuel L Jackson character. Quentin Tarantino was asked on a radio interview what was in the case and he replied "It's whatever the viewer wants it to be."

One of the characters in the movie is named Harry and another is named Dean Stanton. Coincidentally, one of the actors in the film is named Harry Dean Stanton. "The Green Mile" was character actor Dabbs Green's last film although he continued to appear in TV shows until 2003.

The film had a budget of $60 million and the worldwide box office was over $286 million.
