Answer: Pee-wee's Big Adventure

"Pee-wee's Big Adventure" was the big-screen edition of his stage show "The Pee-wee Herman Show". Reuben's character has his bike stolen, and subsequently travels the country trying to track it down. A year later, after the success of the film, "Pee-wee's Playhouse" became a regular Saturday morning show on CBS. Apart from being Tim Burton's big break into the world of directing, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" was significant for Burton for two other reasons. The first reason was the way the film became a success, reaping a decent profit over expenses (a budget of $7 million and a gross profit of nearly $41 million). The second reason, and in my opinion the more significant one, was that it marked the first time that Burton worked with composer Danny Elfman. Elfman has composed the score for nearly every Tim Burton film since then. Paul Reubens later acted in Burton's film "Batman Returns" (1992) and he did a voice part in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993).

Walken portrayed "Max Shreck", a powerful business mogul who also happened to be Seline "Catwoman" Kyle's boss. Later in the film, he allied himself with The Penguin and assisted in his run for mayor. In the final battle, Shreck met his end and the hands of Catwoman and her powerful electric tazer. It was Christmas time in Gotham and Batman found himself up against not one, but three adversaries. The Penguin sought revenge on a City that turned it's back on him by planning a missile launch in the heart of Gotham, using Emperor Penguins to transport the missiles into position. Catwoman sought Max Shreck, the man who pushed her out of the window and to her apparent death...only to be brought back to life by cats. Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Seline Kyle (Catwoman) were also involved in a relationship during this film. They let slip their alter ego's whilst dancing at the Gotham Ball. "Mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it," remarked Kyle. "But a kiss can be even deadlier," replied Wayne echoing an exchange that Batman and Catwoman had previously in the film.

This is an excellent movie with great songs by Danny Elfman. Johnny Depp gives his voice to the unfortunate Victor Van Dort. Victor is supposed to marry Victoria, the daughter of a local noble family. The marriage was agreed upon by the respective parents, although Victor and Victoria never met. After a unsuccessful wedding rehearsal, Victor ends up being married to the Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). At first, the Corpse Bride is convinced that Victor loves her, in the end she sees that he belongs among the living. Eventually, everyone lives (?) happily ever after. This movie was nominated for an Academy Award.

But humankind fights back, although the eventual solution to killing the aliens is not the most graceful of solutions.

The plot of this film revolved around a recently deceased couple (The Maitlands) and their attempts to scare off the new family that had moved into their old home. The Maitlands called on Beetlejuice to help them but soon found that they had gotten more than they bargained for dealing with the "bio-exorcist". "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" was never nominated for an award. "Batman" scored a win the in the "Best Art Direction" category. "Edward Scissorhands" was nominated in the "Best Makeup" category but ultimately lost out to "Dick Tracy".

"James and the Giant Peach" came out in 1996 and was based on the story by Roald Dahl. "Corpse Bride" was released in 2005 and was based on a Russian folktale. "Frankenweenie" was a 2012 release, and was based on Burton's own short film from 1984. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993) was based on a poem written by Tim Burton himself back in 1982 (the same time he produced his "Vincent" short). The story is about a character from Halloween Town named Jack Skellington (voiced by Chris Sarandon) who is tired of the Halloween routine. When he stumbles across a portal to Christmas Town, he is impressed with the way they do things, and tries to change things. Things go awry, however, when circumstances lead to the abduction of Santa Claus himself! The poem is too long to print here in its entirety, but here are the first two stanzas to whet your appetite: "It was late one fall in Halloweenland, and the air had quite a chill. Against the moon a skeleton sat, alone upon a hill. He was tall and thin with a bat bow tie; Jack Skellington was his name. He was tired and bored in Halloweenland "I'm sick of the scaring, the terror, the fright. I'm tired of being something that goes bump in the night. I'm bored with leering my horrible glances, And my feet hurt from dancing those skeleton dances. I don't like graveyards, and I need something new. With a supporting cast that included Christina Ricci, Michael Gough, Michael Gambon, Miranda Richardson, Christopher Walken and Casper Van Dien, it is no surprise that the film was a critical success. After a budget of only $30 million, the film grossed over $206 million worldwide.
