Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What colour is an octopus' blood? (when it's oxygenated)

Answer: Blue

The blue colour is due to the haemocyanin compounds they use to transport oxygen, instead of mammalian haemoglobin. Heamocyanin complexes contain copper rather than iron.

2. Making up around 4% of its total body weight (the most of any bird), the brain of which of the following birds can recall the location of every flower they've ever visited?

Answer: hummingbird

In terms of comparison, the human brain makes up about 2% of our body weight. Other amazing feats of the hummingbird's incredible brain are its ability to calculate the time needed for a flower to create more nectar and recognizing which humans reliably fill their feeders.

3. In 2010, and especially for Fridays, into which class of creature did the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New Orleans class alligators?

Answer: Fish

The Roman Catholic diocese of New Orleans is the second oldest of its kind in the United States. Although this practice isn't adhered to by many Catholics today, refraining from eating meat on Fridays was once a strictly followed belief of this church.

It was, and is, to honour the death of Jesus Christ who was crucified on that day. Fish, however, is permitted for consumption on this day. Accordingly then, in 2010, the Archbishop of New Orleans blithely reclassified reptilian alligators into fish for this purpose. I think I'd prefer a can of sardines. Alligators have been around for the past 66 million years. Oh my stars, some can even walk on their hind legs for several steps just before they lunge. If alligators can't kill animals in a single bite, they drown them in a death roll in the water instead. Did you know that an alligator with an immobilised tail cannot do a death roll? No doubt that's some consolation if you're dangling from one's jaws.

4. In early 2022, officials in Sunnyvale, California decided to test green lasers in order to drive what type of birds away?

Answer: Crows

The plethora of crows were a plague to the city's downtown area with their incessant cawing and bird droppings. In response to the assertion that the lasers were expensive, Mayor Larry Klein said "it's far better than spending hundreds of dollars to spray-wash the sidewalks every few weeks." Crows, being the smart birds that they are, soon worked out that the lasers were harmless and the experiment was shortlived.

5. Cormorants in Japan have been domesticated to assist with which industry?

Answer: Fishing

For more than 1300 years cormorants have been used to aid river fishermen, who tie a snare near the base of the bird's throat allowing only small fish to be swallowed by the bird. Fish too large to be swallowed are removed by the fisherman. Although more efficient fishing methods have developed, the tradition of Cormorant fishing continues, and has become part of the Japanese tourist industry.

7. What is the common name of the amphibian species Rhinella marina, which has become a pest in Australia?

Answer: cane toad

Also known as the giant neotropical toad or marine toad, the cane toad is native to Central and South America. It owes its name to its use in agricultural pest control against the cane beetle, an Australian insect that damages sugar cane. This amphibian, which has highly toxic skin and can grow to a size of over 20 cm (8 in), was introduced to Australia from Hawaii in 1935 to replace pesticides, following its successful use for pest control in Puerto Rico. Since then, the species has multiplied across Australia, wreaking havoc on the local fauna, and creating serious environmental damage.

The American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) has become an invasive species in South America, Europe, and East and Southeast Asia.

9. In Canada, which bird generally signifies the onset of the spring season?

Answer: Robin

Generally speaking, the robin (Turdus migratorius) is regarded as the first sign of spring in Canada. This songbird is a migratory member of the thrush family of birds. The robin is known for the bright red breast which adorns the male of the species. Robins are approximately 10 to 11 inches long (23 to 28 cm) and have a wingspan between 12.2 to 16 inches (31 to 41 cm). They weigh about 2.7 ounces (77 grams).

10. Some animals can pause their pregnancies. Which of the following species can do this?

Answer: Kangaroos and wallabies

Embryonic diapause occurs when the fertilised egg forms an embryo and it is paused from developing. It is kept in this very early state until it is prompted to continue. There are over 110 species that can do this but over half are marsupials. There are two reasons for this.

The first reason is you can have one mating event and have two pregnancies. If the first fails the second is 'activated' without having to find another mate. Swamp wallabies, the females at least, are pregnant their whole adult life: They have two uteri.

A jill constantly has one embryo on pause in one uterus, and a developing joey in the other. When the joey crawls into the pouch, another mating event takes place. The other condition occurs when there are unfavourable conditions like drought, a common occurrence in Australia. If there is no food because of a lack of water, the pregnancy is put on hold until conditions are more favourable.
