Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which member of the Phillips Family is known for playing a major role in organising the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967?

Answer: John

John Phillips co-founded the Monterey Pop Festival after he was approached by a promoter who suggested creating a concert which would feature John's band, the Mamas and the Papas. Phillips was interested in helping to create a festival that would showcase bands for free and help to promote rock music.

The Monterey International Pop Festival, to give it its full name, was partially inspired by the Human Be-In event held earlier that year in San Francisco. The festival used the same site as the Monterey Jazz Festival and provided a stage for established stars as well as new acts. It is regarded by some as marking the start of the Summer of Love and provided a template for a number of future music festivals. "Monterey Pop" is the name of a 1968 film which documented the festival.

Claude Phillips was John's father, and Tommy and Rosemary were his siblings.
2. Which wife helped John Phillips, who was married four times, form the American folk rock group The Mamas & the Papas in 1965 along with Denny Doherty?

Answer: Michelle Phillips

The 1967 autobiographical hit single "Creeque Alley" from the Mamas & the Papas gives some background to the formation of the group. John Phillips came from the Journeymen while Denny Doherty was with the Mugwumps. Cass Elliot who joined later was also in the Mugwumps. The Journeymen were having their problems when Michelle married John Phillips in 1963, with that trio finally splitting in 1964. The New Journeymen, comprising the Phillips and banjoist Marshall Brickman, emerged. Brickman left to take a writing job and Doherty replaced him.

The line-up remained much the same except for a short period when Michelle got herself sacked temporarily (Jill Gibson briefly became a band member in Michelle's place) and Owen Elliot took her late mother's place (Cass Elliot died in 1974) when the band reunited in 1998 for a performance at the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
3. After my first marriage failed, I married Dennis Hopper (but only for eight days) and had two children, Aron and Austin, with my partner Granger Hines. Who am I?

Answer: Michelle Phillips

Born Holly Michelle Gilliam, Michelle's introduction to John Phillips led to the failing of his marriage to Susan Adams. Her marriage to John Phillips was to fail as well. Dennis Hopper briefly came next as husband, then Robert Burch. She then seems to have given up on marriage, however; of her three later partners, she and Grainger Hines had two sons to add to her daughter by John Phillips.
4. John Phillips had five children. Which of his four wives did NOT bear him a child?

Answer: Farnaz Arasteh

John Phillips married Farnaz Arasteh in 1995. An artist and painter, her marriage lasted until his death in 2001. She has kept her life private and so there are few details to flesh out her profile. Some sources indicate that 1949 is her birth year, others that it is 1959. She is best known for her connection to John Phillips. His children are (in birth order and by mother): Jeffrey and Mackenzie (Susan Adams), Chynna (Michelle Phillips), Tamerlane and Bijou (Geneviève Waite).
5. Which Phillips formed a band with childhood friends Carnie and Wendy Wilson?

Answer: Chynna

Childhood friends, the trio formed their band, Wilson Phillips, in 1989. The other two members are the sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson, daughters of Brian Wilson of "The Beach Boys" fame. Their debut album, "Wilson Phillips", did well with three of the singles reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Subsequent albums have not attracted as much acclaim and there have been various reunions following break-ups.
6. My acting credits include portraying Julie Cooper Horvath in the TV sitcom "One Day at a Time" (1975-1983) and Molly Phillips in the TV series "So Weird" (1999-2001). Who am I?

Answer: Mackenzie

The eldest John Phillips' daughter, Mackenzie, has not had a trouble-free time. She was eventually let go from "One Day at a Time" due to her drug and alcohol problems. Substance abuse problems have led to rehabilitation and then to a role as a drug rehabilitation counselor.

She has appeared as Pam Valentine in episodes of the 2017 rebooted version of "One Day at a Time", this time as a therapist, which seems appropriate.
7. Which Phillips songwriter wrote the song "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" for Scott McKenzie, formerly a fellow member of the Journeymen, to record?

Answer: John

It was John Phillips who wrote the song in 1967 to promote the Monterey International Pop Music Festival in June of that year. It was a hit, topping the charts in nine countries. It was sung by his fellow The Journeymen band member Scott McKenzie with Phillips playing guitar. This song is strongly associated with the Summer of Love and the 1960s counterculture movement.
8. Apart from John, which other Phillips family member joined the New Mamas & the Papas when it was formed in the early 1980s?

Answer: Mackenzie

Awaiting sentencing on narcotics charges, John Phillips invited his son Jeffrey and daughter Mackenzie to help revive the Mamas and the Papas. In the end, it was initially Mackenzie in place of Michelle and Elaine 'Spanky' McFarlane (of Spanky and Our Gang) in place of the late Cass Elliot who joined John Phillips and Denny Doherty. Nine others joined as others dropped out. The music was mostly based on the original band's material.
9. Which Phillips daughter married Danny Masterson of "That 70s Show" (1998-2006), filed for divorce when he was convicted of rape, and appeared in the comedy drama film "Almost Famous" (2000)?

Answer: Bijou

Genevieve's daughter by John Phillips, Bijou married Danny Masterson in 2011. Rape allegations were made in 2017 by fellow Scientologists, and, despite suppression attempts by the Church, he was convicted in 2023 of raping two women some 20 years previously with more accusers emerging. The season 3 finale of the TV documentary series "Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath" covers the sexual-assault allegations against Masterson.

Bijou's bio lists her as an actress, model, socialite and singer. She is also a mother, having a daughter Fianna Francis with Danny Masterson.
10. Which family member turned to acting, appearing in episodes of over 40 TV series between 1973 and 2003, including "Knots Landing " (1987, 1989-1993), as well as various films including a lead role in the thriller "Dillinger" (1973)?

Answer: Michelle

The final live performance of the Mamas and the Papas was in 1967. The band produced their fourth album in 1968, the same year that Michelle gave birth to Chynna. The Phillips filed for divorce in 1969 and the band officially disbanded in 1971, followed by the release of their final album which was produced to fulfill contractual obligations. It was not their most successful album.

Michelle enrolled in acting classes to support her change in direction. Her first film appearance was the 1968 "Monterey Pop" documentary, followed by an acting role in "Saturation 70", an unfinished "Alice in Wonderland" adaptation which appears to be lost. She next had a minor part in Dennis Hopper's "The Last Movie" (1971), and was briefly married to him. She was nominated for an award for her "Dillinger" performance.
