Think of a habit as something you do as a matter of routine (maybe without even thinking about it), like brushing your teeth or biting your nails. A bad habit is something you do that isn't helpful or might be hurtful.
From the quiz list, these would be examples of bad habits:
- biting your nails (maybe when stressed?)
- picking your nose (a nervous or unconscious action)
- slouching (a habit of bad posture)
- whining (habitual complaining)
- interrupting (automatic tendency to speak before others finish)
- not brushing your teeth (a habit of skipping a routine becomes a routine)
- skipping a meal (maybe a choice at first, but it becomes automatic)
But these quiz list isn't all just habits... what about poor choices?
A choice is when you decide to do one thing instead of another, like choosing to eat an apple or a cookie. A bad choice is when you decide to do something that you know isn't a good idea, or that might hurt you or someone else.
From the quiz list, these would be examples of poor choices:
- bad language (you choose to use specific words in a situation)
- talking back (a choice to defy or disrespect (usually) an adult's instruction)
- lying (a conscious decision to not tell the truth)
- ignoring rules (a choice to disobey a rule or expectation)
- throwing a tantrum (a choice to lose control of your emotions and yell or scream)
- not listening (a conscious choice to ignore what someone is saying)
- bullying (a deliberate choice to be mean or hurtful to someone else)
- stealing (a deliberate choice to take something that doesn't belong to you)
It can be hard to make changes from bad habits to good habit, and to always make good choices. But, it is important to try, as making good choices in behaviour and how you treat other people really is the best choice.
