Expelliarmus is the Disarming Charm and Harry Potter fans sometimes call it "Harry's signature spell", since he uses it during quite a few key moments in the series. The spell makes the target's wand fly out of their hand and it was first introduced at the Duelling Club in 'The Chamber of Secrets'.

Lumos is the Wand-Lighting Charm, mentioned in all books except 'The Philosopher's Stone' and frequently used throughout the series. One of the incorrect answers, Noctus, might sound like it would produce the opposite result of Lumos, but it's not actually a spell in the Harry Potter world. The real counter-charm to Lumos is Nox.

Alohomora is another more commonly known spell. Using the Unlocking Charm on a locked thing such as a door unlocks it. The spell is actually one of the very first spells used in the series, introduced when Hermione Granger unlocks the door to the restricted third-floor corridor in 'The Philosopher's Stone'.

Wingardium Leviosa, the Levitation Charm, was also introduced in 'The Philosopher's Stone' when it was taught during Professor Flitwick's Charms class. A certain Ron Weasley had trouble pronouncing its name!

Reparo is the Mending Charm and used to repair broken objects. It is the very last spell used in the entire main series, cast in 'The Deathly Hallows' with the Elder Wand when Harry wants to repair his old, broken holly wand.

Sectumsempra is one of the more severe spells, again used on Malfoy by Harry though this time in 'The Half-Blood Prince'. He did not know beforehand what effect the spell would have and was horrified to learn that it slashes the victim like an invisible sword, something that caused great harm to Malfoy. The spell (or curse, rather) was created by none other than Severus Snape.

Muffliato is a nifty little spell also invented by Snape during his time at Hogwarts. When the spell is used, the people close enough to hear the user (other than the people the user wants to talk to) gets their ears filled with a buzzing sound as to prevent eavesdropping. Very useful to be able to have private conversations anywhere!

Incendio is the Fire-Making Charm and is used surprisingly little in the books, considering how useful you'd think it would be! The first time it was explicitly mentioned was in 'The Goblet of Fire' when Arthur Weasley used it on the fireplace in the Dursley family home.

Protego Horribilis is a stronger form of Protego, the Shield Charm. The spell creates an invisble barrier around whatever or whomever the user aims at, protecting the target from harm. The minor version, Protego, only works against minor or moderate hexes and curses. Protego Horribilis is a much more potent version which protects against more advanced forms of magic.

Accio is the Summoning Charm and would be the saviour of couch potatos all around the world, because if they were able to use it, they would never again have to reach for the TV remote! The spell was perhaps most famously used by Harry in 'The Goblet of Fire' during the first challenge of the Tri-Wizard Tournament, when he used it to call for the Firebolt, his flying broom.

Legilimens is the incantation for the Legilimency Spell, used to delve into a person's mind and seeing their thoughts, memories and emotions. In other words, it's a very intrusive spell not to be used lightly. It was first introduced in 'The Order of the Phoenix' when Harry was to be taught by Severus Snape to resist this type of magic.

Finally, Waddiwasi is the silliest of the spells on the list. It's also called the Projectile Jinx and is used to sling a small piece of mass towards a target. The spell was only used once in the main books, in 'The Prisoner of Azkaban' when Professor Lupin used it to force a piece of gum into the nostril of Peeves, the annoying Poltergeist at Hogwarts.

Gluteus Maximus is a large muscle in our bodies and a large part of the buttocks. Tarantella is an Italian folk dance. Somnambulis is not a spell, but very close to the word for sleep-walking. Ignis is the Latin word for fire, and Noctus is a slight variation of noctis, the genetive form of the latin word for night.
