quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', Luna found that people had been hiding her belongings all year. She missed the feast because she was trying to find them, but what spell could she have used instead?

Answer: Accio

That's right! Using Accio for all her items would be the best way, as they would all zoom towards her, just like when Harry summonsed his firebolt the same way in 'Goblet of Fire'.
2. As the Weasleys have so many children, their clothing bill is probably huge! What would be a cheap way to make sure their robes aren't too small?

Answer: Use "Engorgio" on their robes

"Engorgio" makes something bigger, so using it on clothes would make them a size or two larger. It would be a cheap way but probably not a very good way, as the robes would probably end up much too big.

Using "Waddiwasi" on their money wouldn't work, as "Waddiwasi" is used to remove objects from where they are stuck and to propel them into the air. It was seen in "Prisoner of Azkaban" when Lupin used it to make gum fly out of a keyhole and up Peeves' nose.

Using "Diffindo" on their robes would rip them to shreds, not making them larger in any way, and "Lumos" would not have any effects on their pockets, only lighting them up and showing the lack of money inside!
3. Voldemort hid his Horcruxes in obscure places, such as in the cave by the sea. He would not have needed to go to such extremes if he had used a Fidelius Charm.

Answer: True

A Fidelius Charm completely hides something so that nobody could find it, unless they were given the location by the Secret Keeper, or the Secret Keeper dies. This charm was used to hide the Potters when Voldemort wanted to kill them. It would have worked perfectly if Wormtail was not made Secret Keeper, as he gave the location to his master.

However, I doubt that Voldemort would trust anyone enough to give them the location of his Horcruxes!
4. In 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', Hagrid was falsely accused of opening the Chamber and was expelled from school in his third year. What could have been used to prove his innocence?

Answer: The potion "Veritaserum"

This potion makes the drinker tell the truth and Hagrid would therefore have no choice in spilling his secrets. This potion is seen to work in the 'Goblet of Fire' where Barty Crouch Jr confesses.

The potion "Amortentia" is a love potion, the spell "Levicorpus" lifts a person into the air by their ankle, and the spell "Expelliarmus" disarms.
5. Nobody knows what a boggart looks like - but what Muggle object could be used to find out?

Answer: A video camera

Putting a video camera inside a cupboard - or where a boggart resides - would potentially allow the shape of a boggart to be seen when not facing a human.

However, it has been said that electronic items do not work at Hogwarts ("bugging" in book 4) and that most wizards do not use electricity but I would imagine that somehow they would overcome that difficulty if they wished to know a boggart's shape. Or, they could find a Boggart that lived outside of Hogwarts and try to capture it on camera there.
6. In 'The Goblet of Fire', Neville melted his sixth cauldron. Which spell might have been used to try and repair the damage, instead of getting a new cauldron each time?

Answer: Reparo

Perhaps you can't repair cauldrons when they have lost their shape - or maybe Snape just wanted to humiliate Neville. "Reparo" is the correct spell. "Everte statum" is used to send a person backwards (seen in the second film) and the other two spells are made up.
7. In the film of 'The Philosopher's Stone', Harry used a lantern to sneak into the library. What could he have used instead, which wouldn't be found by Filch?

Answer: The spell "Lumos"

The spell Lumos lights the wand tip, so that Harry would not need a lantern. If he had done this, the lantern would not have smashed and been found by Filch, who told Professors Snape and Quirrel, with the lantern as evidence that "a student's out of bed".
8. In 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', Harry was accused of using magic in Privet Drive. What spell could have been used to prove his innocence?

Answer: Priori Incantatem

"Tarantallegra" makes the victim dance; "Impervius" makes an object water-proof; and "Avis" creates a flock of birds. "Priori Incantatem" makes a wand produce an echo of the last spell performed. In this case, if it were used upon Harry's wand, and the last spell was not the Hover Charm he was accused of, he would have been proven innocent. Dobby actually levitated the pudding, and so Harry's last spell would have been one he used at Hogwarts in the previous year.
9. In 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', Sirius Black spent a lot of his time inside his house. Which of the following could he NOT have used to disguise himself?

Answer: The spell "Descendo"

The Polyjuice potion would make him transform into someone else. For example, if it were created and a curl of Hermione's hair were added, Sirius would turn into Hermione and be able to go outside safely for an hour.

Wearing Harry's cloak would make him invisible and he would therefore be able to escape the house for as long as he wanted to.

The Disillusionment Charm would not make him invisible, but make him take on the colours and patterns of the things behind him, like a chameleon. (This was performed on Harry in OotP.) It would disguise him enough if he wanted to go out at night on a broom, for instance.

The spell "Descendo" makes something lower, and would not be at all helpful in this situation.
10. In the Harry Potter movie 'The Prisoner of Azkaban', Stan Shunpike struggles to get Harry's trunk on board the Knight Bus. What spell could he use, instead of trying to lift it himself?

Answer: Wingardium Leviosa

"Wingardium Leviosa" lifts objects into the air, as seen when Hermione causes a feather to fly into the air during the charms lesson in the first book and film. "Ferula" creates a bandage and a splint. "Impedimenta" knocks back an object. "Lumos" lights the wand tip.
