The Sixth Amendment was ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Many of its provisions were based on English Common Law, such as the right to a public jury trial, the right to cross examine witnesses, and the right to counsel.
The Sixth Amendment has been determined to guarantee defendants (with various exceptions and limiting factors):
The right to a speedy and public trial.
The right to an impartial jury that is a cross-section of the community.
The right to be tried in the place the crime was committed.
The right to be informed of the accusation against them.
The right to confront and cross examine witnesses.
The right to call witnesses in their favour.
The right to counsel, and also the right to represent themselves.
Originally, this amendment only applied to federal courts. However, the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868 extended most of its protections to state courts as well, along with much of the rest of the Bill of Rights.
