Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From 1963 to 1973, Cape Canaveral in Florida was renamed to what?

Answer: Cape Kennedy

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an executive order shortly after the assassination of John F Kennedy to rename the cape after the fallen president who was instrumental in launching the space program in the United States. The cape itself was home to NASA's Launch Operations Center, which was also renamed the Kennedy Space Center at the same time.

The renaming of the cape itself was opposed by local residents. They cited the history of the name Cape Canaveral (which was first named by Vasco da Gama), and the shoreline town of Cape Canaveral - whose name was unchanged.

In 1973, the Florida State legislature voted to re-establish the Cape Canaveral name.

3. Famous for the movie named after it, where is the city of Casablanca?

Answer: Morocco

Casablanca is the largest city, but not the capital city, of Morocco, a country situated along the northwest coast of Africa. Its name comes from Portuguese for "white house". The film "Casablanca" (1942) is set during WWII and showed Casablanca as a city in the midst of a power struggle between warring European nations.

The city was an important port during WWII: it had a large American air base, hosted staging for American aircraft, and was the site of the Casablanca Conference with Churchill and Roosevelt in 1943.

7. Three island groups were mentioned. "I'm thinking of a fourth," said Campbell, with a wistful, far away look in his eyes. Campbell was dreaming about which islands, very different from the other three?

Answer: Antipodes Islands

The word "antipodes" is from the Greek, meaning "with feet opposite," and it defines the place on the globe exactly opposite from a given location. The Antipodes Islands, originally the Penantipodes, were so named because they are about as far away from London as any place on earth.

They are volcanic, small, uninhabited and they sit minding their own business in the remote reaches of the South Pacific, 760 km southeast of New Zealand. They consist of a 20 square km main island, and several smaller off shore islands and rocks.

The other three island groups all lie off the coast of Scotland; the Hebrides off the west coast, the Shetlands and Orkneys above the northern tip of that beautiful land. They are all populated, although sparsely, and most inhabitants share a commitment to a simpler, farm-based lifestyle, as well as their obvious Scottish heritage.

8. Which Canadian province is the smallest in area?

Answer: Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island, or 'PEI' for short, has only 5,660 sq. km. of land area, compared to more than 1 million sq. km. in others like Quebec, Ontario and Nunavut. Put another way, PEI encompasses 0.1% of the national land area of Canada. Ontario has 10%, Quebec has 15% and Nunavut has more than 20% of the land area of Canada.

Despite its agricultural economy and small size, PEI is the most densely populated of all the provinces.

Central America is a thin strip of land, so traveling through Central America requires going through Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, with transiting through Belize and El Salvador being optional.

However, there are no roads connecting Panama and Colombia, and this specific region between the two countries is called the Darién Gap.
