Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What disaster occurred on April 15, 2019 during Emmanuel Macron's presidency?

Answer: Notre Dame Cathedral burned

Most of Notre Dame's wooden roof and its spire were destroyed. The famous bell tower and much of the inside remained all right, including its stained-glass windows and pipe organ. French President Emmanuel Macron arrived on the scene at 7:50 PM. Authorities determined the fire in the 12th-century Roman Catholic church was an accident. It took 500 firefighters to put out the blaze, as a hundred of them scrambled to save as much of the art and religious objects as possible, including a crown of thorns believed to have been worn by Jesus. About 13 million people visit the cathedral each year.

Cryptocurrency was invented in 2009. The ExxonMobil merger was finalized on November 30, 1999; at the time they became the world's largest corporation.

2. The Sea of Tranquility was the site of the Apollo 11 mission's 1969 landing of which lunar vessel?

Answer: The Eagle

"The Eagle has landed", said astronaut Neil Armstrong over speakers at NASA's Mission Control in Houston at 4:18 p.m. on the 20th of July, 1969. The late President John F. Kennedy's dream of putting humans on the moon by the end of the 1960s, expressed in a 1961 speech, had come true with only a few months to spare.

The lunar lander called the Eagle was piloted by Armstrong accompanied by Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, who collected samples of rocks and soil and left behind the first human footprints on the Earth's only natural satellite.

3. In 1985, in which country did the Armero tragedy, costing 23,000 lives, occur?

Answer: Colombia

On 13 November 1985, despite the government having been warned by volcanologists to evacuate the area over the previous two months, the Nevado del Ruiz stratovolcano in Tolima, Colombia, erupted, causing mudflows, landslides, and debris flows (lahars) to engulf the town of Armero, with the death of 20,000 of the almost 29,000 population.

Other nearby towns raised the death toll to 23,000. I was a fairly news-aware person then and I do not remember this at all - hence the wrong answers, which I am sure would have received worldwide news coverage and appeals.

4. Isador 'Izzy' Einstein, a federal agent during the US Prohibition, would brag that he could find alcohol in any city in 30 minutes. In what hard-partying city, known for its Bourbon Street, did he find alcohol within 35 seconds?

Answer: New Orleans

Einstein had one of the highest arrest records during Prohibition, and he was known for his elaborate disguises that put many illegal bars out of business. He didn't need that in New Orleans - when he first arrived, he asked his taxi driver where he could get a drink. His driver simply handed him one!

7. A Pyrrhic victory is when you win a battle but at such a cost that you go on to lose the war. Which ancient battle gave rise to the term?

Answer: Battle of Asculum

The Battle of Asculum in 279 BC was one of two during the Pyrrhic War when the victory won proved costly for the Greek king Pyrrhus. Although he lost fewer men during this battle and the Battle of Heraclea (280 BC), he lost too many experienced soldiers and commanders who could not be replaced, unlike the Romans who were on home territory.

The other battles listed were Pyrrhic victories from the 20th century.

8. Midas, whose touch could turn everything to gold, was the king of Phrygia. In which country could you find the remains of ancient Phrygia?

Answer: Turkey

You can visit Gordium, the capital of ancient Phrygia-- it's about 70-80 km southwest of Ankara. The Phrygians had their own distinct culture, and a mysterious and poorly-attested language, which was perhaps most closely related to ancient Greek. 10. The Rush-Bagot Pact between the USA and the UK became effective in 1817 following years of naval build-up and battles in what body or bodies of water?

Answer: Great Lakes

During and immediately following the War of 1812, America and Britain increased the number of ships patrolling the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie and Ontario given their geographic position on the border. The Battle of Lake Erie in 1813 was one of the important naval battles during the war. U.S. Minister to Great Britain, John Quincy Adams, proposed disarmament of the area in January 1816 and British Foreign Secretary Viscount Castlereagh responded favorably. Charles Bagot was sent as Minister to the United States and reached the Pact with Acting Secretary of State Richard Rush.
