Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chris Haney, who passed away in 2010, was the co-creator of which quiz board game?

Answer: Trivial Pursuit

Haney was a high school dropout who worked for a time as a photo editor for The Montreal Gazette. He met Scott Abbott while on assignment covering the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic Games. The two designed and developed Trivial Pursuit after a game of Scrabble and a round of beers in December 1979.

2. Which colour is associated with a studious woman, the second full moon in a calendar month and a large housefly?

Answer: blue

A studious woman is colloquially called a blue stocking; the second full moon in a calendar month is a blue moon - hence the saying "once in a blue moon" which refers to something that is not impossible but very rare and a blue bottle is the common name for the big, buzzy unpleasant, but rather beautiful fly that is a household pest.

3. What name is given to the delectable, deep-fried choux pastry treats typical of New Orleans cuisine?

Answer: beignets

The French word "beignet" denotes a dish made of deep-fried choux pastry. Unlike doughnuts, choux pastry contains no raising agent, and relies exclusively on the steam created by the dough's high moisture content for its light, airy texture. Beignets are mainly associated with New Orleans and its iconic Café du Monde, where these treats can be enjoyed fresh and hot, dusted with plenty of powdered sugar, and accompanied by a cup of café au lait.

The Italian zeppole, traditionally eaten for St. Joseph's Day (19 March), are also made of deep=fried choux pastry, though they are generally filled with pastry cream (custard) or other creamy fillings. Brownies are American chocolate-based bar cookies, while biscotti refers to twice-baked Italian almond cookies; börek are Turkish filled pastries that can be sweet or savoury.

4. When King Tutankhamen's tomb was opened in 1923 what sweet food type was discovered in a pot? Amazingly it was still edible after 3,200 years.

Answer: Honey

Today we think of honey primarily as a sweetener, but in the ancient world it had many other uses. It has properties that prevent infection.

5. Agricola is a board game that involves building up which of these?

Answer: A farm

'Agricola' is the Latin word for 'farmer' so it makes sense that in this game, your primary focus is building up your farmland. Winner of a Spiel des Jahres Award, this 2007 board game for up to five players involves collecting resources on your turn to build your house, farmland, paddocks, and resources to end the game with the most points (while also maintaining your family, income, crops, and creatures).

The aim is to manage your resources while not letting yourself get too focused on one element of your objectives.

6. Which is NOT a knot?

Answer: Figure Five Knot

The Granny and Square are very similar knots, both used to link two ropes together.

The Clove Hitch is used more for a fence post or a piece of wood.

The Figure "eight" is used when rappelling to secure the rope at the upper area while rappelling down.

7. Emmentaler, Gruyère and Appenzeller are cheeses, and Ticino and Lavaux are wine growing regions of which Alpine country?

Answer: Switzerland

Situated in western Europe, Switzerland, a landlocked nation is made up of 26 regions known as cantons. Berne is the capital and Zurich the largest city, the currency is the Swiss franc and the principal languages are French, German and to a lesser extent Italian. Pinot Noir is the country's most common red wine grape and Chasselas or Chasselas Blanc the most common white.

8. Caviar is an expensive delicacy that comes from salt-cured fish-eggs. To be classed as true caviar the roe must come from wild sturgeon that have dwelt in either of which two bodies of water?

Answer: Black Sea and Caspian Sea

Beluga, Sterlet, Ossetra, and Sevruga are the four genuine different types of caviar. By far and away the rarest and most sought after comes from beluga sturgeon that inhabit the Caspian Sea. I am no expert but on the very rare occasions I've been fortunate to eat caviar, I found I enjoyed Sterlet the most, lighter in colour, smoother in texture and not as bitter as beluga, and also apparently the choice of royalty! The Black Sea is situated in southeast Europe and the Caspian sea is the world's biggest enclosed inland body of water with shores in Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

9. What ingredients make up the German fast-food dish known as currywurst?

Answer: Pork sausages and curry sauce

Herta Heuwer invented currywurst in the late 1940s after mixing Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and curry powder and pouring it over some cooked sausages. This dish is a notable icon of German culture and former German leader Gerhard Schröder is known to be a big fan.

10. Surprisingly so, the Canadian buffaloberry plant can be used to make which product?

Answer: Soap

The buffaloberry, also known as the soapberry, can also be consumed. It doesn't taste particularly nice however. It contains a product known as saponin which produces detergents and soap with low level suds. Eating same would be equivalent perhaps to washing one's mouth out with soap.
