Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of redwaldo's hobbies is collecting the music of The Beatles. In what format would this music be most valuable to a collector?

Answer: vinyl records

The music of The Beatles was released on singles(7 inches) and Long Plays (L.P.),which were 12 inches in diameter. Early recordings (such as Please Please Me) were only available in mono, but this changed to stereo in the mid-1960s.

Original vinyl records of The Beatles sell for a premium at record fairs, particularly if the record is in mint condition. The singles were played at 45 r.p.m. and L.P.s at 33 1/3 r.p.m.
2. Tezza1551 had many hobbies, including reading, writing, renovating, gardening, embroidery, cross-stitch, sewing and breeding livestock. In which of the hobbies listed would she be likely to use a product called "waste canvas"?

Answer: Cross-stitch

Waste canvas is used to stitch a design on a product that does not have an even thread count. The canvas is tacked on to the fabric, then the design is stitched on to the canvas. Finally, the canvas is removed thread by thread, leaving the stitched design on the garment or article.
3. Team member iCaramba has enjoyed solving New York Times crossword puzzles since junior high school. Which U.S. President once composed the clues for an online version of the newspaper's puzzle?

Answer: Bill Clinton

An avowed fan of the New York Times puzzle, Clinton collaborated with Editor Will Shortz in 2007 to write clues and answers that Shortz described as "laugh out loud funny."
4. Trivvya's favorite hobby is one where she can personalize the items to give as gifts, or sell them to replenish the materials. The materials needed for her hobby include; jars, wax, wicks, scented fragrance oil and sometimes a little color. The results are far different from when they were made from tallow. What items are the result of her hobby?

Answer: scented container candles

Using all natural materials like soy wax and cotton core wicks, produces cleaner burning candles.
5. Lesley153's hobby needs a surprising amount of equipment, including rippers, shears, an iron and a ham. Can you say what hobby would need these items?

Answer: sewing

These are all things I use for sewing clothes - dressmaking or tailoring. Shears for cutting out, an iron for pressing seams, and a ham for pressing curved seams. The ripper, or seam ripper, is for undoing the seams and starting again (nothing at all to do with bodice rippers).
6. As a boy, one of elvislennon's hobbies was collecting cricket autographs. Under most circumstances, which item would be most valuable to a collector if signed by a famous player?

Answer: a game-used ball

Some of the signatures I obtained were from great New Zealand players of the 1970's and 80's including: Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Geoff Howarth and Lance Cairns.
7. If CmdrK had his choice, he'd spend his October days in the U.S. state of Vermont, fussing over f/stops, ISOs, tripods and the perfect positioning of the sun. What hobby does he like?

Answer: photography

Photography can involve complicated equipment and procedures, or you can have fun, and take surprisingly good pictures, with a point-and-shoot camera. Either way, Vermont is one of the premier destinations for foliage photography.
8. One of rockinsteve's favorite hobbies is collecting sports cards of the four major professional sports in the U.S. This includes baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey. A multitude of companies have been issuing collectible cards for these sports for quite some time. Which company leads in total sports cards sales since its inception in 1951?

Answer: Topps

Topps started printing baseball cards in 1951 and is still going strong today. They continue to issue sports cards of all four of the major sports in the U.S.
9. Geocaching is the modern version of an old British game called Letterboxing, a game of hide and seek. What high-tech device does Wyambezi need in order to make this game much easier?

Answer: handheld GPS receiver

Geocaching is a hobby begun in the USA in May 2000. Caches have been placed in over 100 countries on all continents, with over a million participants. You may find caches within walking distance of your home. My favorite thing about caching is that it has taken me to places I would never have been aware of otherwise, so it's always interesting.

It's important to learn caching guidelines if you decide you want to try it. Geocaching.com has a good list of websites and resources.
10. Casey317 loves to get into his small garden. His favorite home grown food comes in varieties such as 'Grosse Lisse', 'Tiny Tim' and 'Roma'. What does he like growing?

Answer: Tomatoes

The wonderful tomato has 1000's of varieties worldwide. I have listed three of my favorites. It is a very popular product in many a home garden. But is it a fruit or a vegetable? A U.S. Supreme Court case of Nix vs. Hedden (1893) decided 'Tomatoes are "vegetables" and not "fruit" within the meaning of the Tariff Act of 1883 based on the common meaning of those words'.

The court ruled that the tomato was a vegetable in its function because it is served in salads, soups, and main courses. Only if it was eaten in hand or in a dessert can it be classified as a fruit. I believe the fruit/vegetable debate still goes on.
