Colors Trivia Questions

1. There is a Chinese symbol that signifies how opposites can be actually connected in the universe. One side is black and the side is white. Can you name this symbol?

From Quiz
It's Not All Black or White

Answer: Yin and Yang

The Yin and Yang philosophy came into use around the beginning of the 4th century. Yin is the black side and Yang is the white side. While each side represents a contrast to the other, the whole of the two parts symbolize balance and harmony.

2. The Canadian television programme "The Red Green Show" was a parody of what style of television?

From Quiz Red, Green, Nothing In-Between

Answer: Outdoor shows

Created by Steve Smith and (appropriately) Rick Green, "The Red Green Show" is a cross between a sketch comedy and a sit-com. It first aired in 1991 and proved to be so popular, it ran for 15 seasons. During this time it was nominated for twenty three Gemini Awards, winning in 1998, for Best Performance in a Comedy Program or Series. The show is built around handyman Red Green who is also the president of a fictional men's club called the Possum Lodge. They run their own television show dispensing advice on all manner of do-it-yourself projects, fishing tips and a range of other outdoor activities with inevitable failures and hilarious outcomes. (Question and I.I. by Pollucci19)

3. Tekhelet was a dye mentioned in the Hebrew Bible or Tanakh. The exact source of the dye is lost, but what color was it? The Israeli flag wouldn't be the same without it.

From Quiz More Strange Colors, More Hints

Answer: blue

After the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans, the source of the dye was lost and has remained so for almost 2,000 years. The only clues are from the Talmud which says the hillazon or chilazon, a marine creature, was the source. Needless to say, Jews and others have been interested in solving the puzzle. The murex, a marine mollusk, is currently the most common suggestion. It is also the dye source of Tyrian purple or royal purple, an expensive dye used at the time that came from mollusks found in the Mediterranean Sea. The two blue stripes on the Israeli flag are said to be a reference to the color and its use on prayer shawls.

4. History: The Tudor Rose, combining the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York, was created for which king of England?

From Quiz A Red and White Odyssey

Answer: Henry VII

Henry VII became the first Tudor monarch after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. This was the decisive battle of what became known as the 'Wars of the Roses', between the houses of Lancaster and York. Henry was descended from John of Gaunt, the first Duke of Lancaster, while Richard III was a Yorkist. Henry joined the two dynasties by marrying Elizabeth of York, daughter of King Edward IV and niece of Richard III, and the Tudor Rose was symbolic of the new era.

5. Silver was the colour of Maxwell's murderous instrument. The Beatles sang the song but what was the instrument?

From Quiz Electrum Posers (2)

Answer: Hammer

Released in 1969, Paul McCartney sings the song for the Beatles. The lyrics, in which three people are killed by the silver hammer, reflected McCartney's interest in the work of the French symbolist writer Alfred Jarry. The word "pataphysical", which occurs in the first line of the song, was one of Jarry's creations.

6. All that glitters is not gold. One deceptive mineral fitting the expression is fool's gold. What metal is involved?

From Quiz Electrum Posers

Answer: Iron

The mineral pyrite is iron sulphite, otherwise known as fool's gold. Its brassy-yellow appearance reminds people of gold. Strangely perhaps, actual gold combined with arsenic can sometimes be found in pyrite deposits. The word "pyrite" stems from the Greek for "of fire", perhaps reflecting that it can be used to create sparks when struck against steel.

8. Hobbies (Food & Drink): In 2005, which New York restaurant celebrated its golden anniversary with the Golden Opulence Sundae, a $1000 ice cream sundae topped with edible gold leaf?

From Quiz A Golden Lock and a Silver Key

Answer: Serendipity 3

The Golden Opulence Sundae got into the Guinness Book of Records in 2007 as the World's Most Expensive Dessert. The ice cream used in the sundae was vanilla made with Tahitian vanilla beans, and drizzled over it was chocolate sauce made from Amadei Porcelana, a type of dark chocolate from Italy. As well as the gold leaf, the sundae was also topped off with truffles, candied fruits from Paris, marzipan cherries, almond dragées, and chunks of Venezuelan Chuao chocolate. The sundae itself was served in a gem-encrusted goblet, to be eaten with a gold spoon, and came with a tiny dish of sweetened American Golden caviar. Any customer who fancied one would have to order it in advance, however, as it took two days to prepare, due to having to fly the ingredients in.

16. What color is "cerise," a word that entered English from French only a couple hundred years ago at most?

From Quiz More Strange Colors, More Hints

Answer: pink or red

Cerise comes from the French word for cherry, but there the easy work ends. The word is a good example of a difficult one to trace. The standard earliest date in English is from the November 30, 1858 London Times, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, though it is mentioned in a crochet pattern as far back as 1845, according to Wikipedia. Complicating matters is what color it actually meant in English. Cherries are more red than pink. The Duchess of Dorsett was listed as wearing a robe of "cerise-colour satin" in a fashion article in the Jan. 29, 1793 Waterford (Ireland) Herald, while others in the same article were described as wearing pink, implying cerise might have meant red, and moving it several decades back as an English language color. Webster's 1828 Dictionary omits it, as does John Walker's 1835 Dictionary. One could surmise that it was understandable as cherry red to English speakers who knew a little French, and became a word meaning "pink" sometime in the 19th Century. But that includes some guesswork and shows what keeps etymologists up at night.

17. What sunny color is pure cadmium pigment, not cadmium altered with selenium?

From Quiz Strange Colors, With Hints!

Answer: yellow

The mineral cadmium was discovered circa 1817 by Friedrich Stromeyer, and within a few decades, it was cheap enough for artists to use as a pigment that produced a vibrant, long-lasting shade of yellow. Mixing it with selenium or other minerals changed it to orange or red. The New York Times reported in a 2014 article about a potential health ban of it by the European Union, but artists were relieved when the ban was voted down, as they are the main users now, and know to protect themselves from the health risks of inhaling it. Hint: sunny.

18. The pineberry is a white variety of what normally red fruit?

From Quiz Black and White and Red All Over

Answer: Strawberry

Pineberries are one of the oldest varieties of cultivated strawberries, and originally came from South America. They were nearly extinct when Dutch farmers rediscovered them and began growing them commercially in 2003.

19. World: Three of the countries listed have flags which are red and white. Which is the odd one out?

20. Around 50 percent of all gold mined in the world has come from the Witwatersrand Basin. Where is this?

From Quiz Electrum Posers (2)

Answer: South Africa

Theories for how the heavier atomic elements were formed include supernova explosions and neutron star collisions. When gold arrived on Earth, so theory goes, the planet was still in its liquid phase and most heavy metals such as gold sank towards the Earth's core. Jumping forward in time a little to about two billion years ago, an asteroid struck South Africa and formed the Vredefort crater (about 300 km wide), in the process bringing such metals as gold closer to the Earth's surface. The gold was discovered there in 1886.

21. Sport: This Toronto major league baseball team plays at the Rogers Centre and won the World Series in 1992. They are named after a type of bird, the jay - but what kind of jay?
