The first modern summer Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Athens. King George of Greece opened the Olympic Games in front of a large crowd of spectators. Fourteen countries took part with over 300 athletes participating. There were no female athletes allowed to participate but several (male) tourists who happened to be in the area signed up and took part! It was a great success and took place again in 1900 in Paris, France.
