Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Canadian television programme "The Red Green Show" was a parody of what style of television?

Answer: Outdoor shows

Created by Steve Smith and (appropriately) Rick Green, "The Red Green Show" is a cross between a sketch comedy and a sit-com. It first aired in 1991 and proved to be so popular, it ran for 15 seasons. During this time it was nominated for twenty three Gemini Awards, winning in 1998, for Best Performance in a Comedy Program or Series.

The show is built around handyman Red Green who is also the president of a fictional men's club called the Possum Lodge. They run their own television show dispensing advice on all manner of do-it-yourself projects, fishing tips and a range of other outdoor activities with inevitable failures and hilarious outcomes.

2. In which play did Shakespeare first reference the "green-eyed monster"?

Answer: Othello

In Act 3 Scene 3 Iago, the master manipulator, warns Othello "O! beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-ey'd monster which doth mock The meat it feeds on." Renaissance writers often paired colors with emotions. Green and yellow often suggested envy.

3. A 1962 instrumental hit for Booker T. and the M.G.'s included a reference to what type of green vegetable?

Answer: Onions

The record featured a strong melody played on an organ, a feature of many of the band's recordings, and with Booker T. Jones himself playing the instrument. It was just one of the band's recordings, with 'Time is Tight' hitting the charts in 1969. Another recording, 'Soul Limbo', is heard regularly in the UK as it is used as the theme music for the BBC's cricket coverage.

4. In British folklore, what is a Border redcap?

Answer: An ugly murderous goblin

Unlike many depictions who portray goblins as mere nuisances, folklorist William Henderson in the 19th century describes the redcaps as being aggressive creatures whose hats must be soaked in a fresh supply of blood lest they die. They resembled ugly old men and were said to live in ruins on the England-Scotland border. Fear not, for though one would find it difficult to outrun a redcap, reciting the Bible or holding up a cross would drive it away in a pinch. I suppose even mythological creatures can have an aversion to evangelists.

The other descriptions pertain to the Norse wolf Fenrir and the gorgon and phoenix from Greek mythologies.

5. What is the term for colors, such as red and green, whose light hues automatically cancel each other out?

The retina cells, which are stimulated by incoming red light, signal the brain that we are seeing something red. They're also inhibited by green light so the slowing of activity tells the brain we are seeing something green.

8. Red-Green colour blindness is not uncommon in men. How is it transmitted?

Answer: Hereditary

Colour blindness is a X-chromosome recessive gene type of disorder. Males inherit one X chromosomes. If this chromosome has the gene for colour blindness, the new person will be colourblind. Colourblindness in girls is rare as they have two X chromosomes. As the clourblindness gene is recessive, the defect is not present unless both X chromosomes carry it. The most common form is red-green but blue-yellow colourblindness is also possible. Various degrees of the the disorder are possible. Most affected males can see some red and or green colours but they just have trouble differentiating between the two and can learn to adapt somewhat. Achromatopsia or total colour blindness is very rare.

9. Which California sub genre of alternative rock were the band Green on Red associated with, along with bands such as The Three O'Clock, The Long Ryders and The Bangles?

Answer: Paisley Underground

Although the Bangles were by far the most successful Paisley Underground band, there were many good bands within the genre, each often channelling the sound of a particular artist. The Bangles were a neo Mamas and Papas band before chart success came calling while Green On Red were heavily influenced by The Doors. Regrettably, the band was short lived and found minor mainstream success only in UK, although they were extremely popular on the California college circuit of the 1980s and played three of the biggest festivals in 1986, namely Farm Aid in USA, Glastonbury in UK and Roskilde in Denmark.

Answer: Cincinnati Reds - MLS

The Cincinnati Reds, a Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Cincinnati, Ohio, were originally called the 'Cincinnati Red Stockings'. There were several incarnations of the team, but the modern Cincinnati Reds were founded in 1881 as a member of the American Association. When the team left the Association and joined the National League in 1890, 'Stockings' was dropped from the name, and the team became known as the Cincinnati Reds. The National League and the American League began collaborating in 1903, but it wasn't until 2000 when they officially merged and became two divisions of the same organization.
