From Quiz
Geocaching terms-Learn caching terms and practice

Answer: Additional logging requirement

This term will usually appear on challenge caches.

2. What resource would a geocacher find most useful to locate US-based caches?

From Quiz Geocaching- A Family Hobby

Answer: Geocaching.com

Geocaching.com is one of the premier sites to locate caches, not just for the US, but around the world. Both free and paid memberships are available depending on what kind of features you want. Google Imagery can be used to give satellite photographs of where the cache is located and are used on geocaching webpages, but caches are not shown Google Earth.

3. In geocaching, BYOP means Bring Your Own _____.

From Quiz Tales of Geocaching

Answer: Pencil

Of course, this acronym can also mean Bring Your Own Pen. I prefer to use a pencil because it has an eraser! Geocachers often communicate with each other by signing the log book that is at the geocaching site, and it would be especially disappointing to not be able to log in. While there are geocaches that may include a pen or pencil for use, some of the smaller caches, such as micros or nanos, are in containers that are too small to hold another item.

4. What does it mean when a cache has been "geomuggled"?

From Quiz Geocaching Terms

Answer: A non-geocacher has found the geocache and invalidated it.

Used from J.K. Rowling's term "muggles" meaning a non-magic person, a "geomuggle" is a person who is not a geocacher. Then, when used in the term "geomuggled", non-geocachers have found the cache and interacted with it in a way that ruins it for further geocachers, for example by taking out the contents.

5. What does the geocaching term "AMIAT" mean?

From Quiz Geocaching terms-Learn caching terms and practice

Answer: Another micro in a tree

There are a lot of these when you go out caching. If you start to pay attention, you can see just how many there are!

6. Where was the first Geocache hidden?

From Quiz Geocaching- A Family Hobby

Answer: Beaver Creek, Oregon

The first geocache was hidden by Dave Ulmer on May 3rd 2000 in woods near Beaver Creek, Oregon. He shared the location of this container on the Internet and within three days, it had been found by Mike Teague. The rest is history!

7. At geocaching sites, FTF means First To _____.

From Quiz Tales of Geocaching

Answer: Find

It is exciting to be the first geocacher to find a geocache after it has been published, so pay attention to those notifications! Along with the pride of being the first to find a geocache, there may be a special reward found at the site. You might find a special FTF pin, or maybe even a cash prize! In addition, being the FTF gives a person bragging rights! What geocacher worth her salt doesn't love to tell stories about where she has been?

8. Who placed the first geocache?(Also known as a "cache")

From Quiz Geocaching - Early History

Answer: Dave Ulmer

Dave Ulmer proposed a way to celebrate the demise of Selective Availability. On May 3, 2000, he hid a bucket of goodies in the woods near Portland, Oregon and posted its location on the newsgroup sci.geo.satellite-nav. It wasn't termed as a 'cache or Geocache then, a different name was used.

9. "TNLNSL" is a term that you usually put in 'Logged Visits' section on the cache's page. What does it mean?

From Quiz Geocaching Terms

Answer: Took nothing, Left nothing, Signed logbook.

If I were to use this term, I would put something like this: Great find. Somewhat easy. TNLNSL. Or I could just leave a logged visit saying: TNLNSL

10. When hiding a cache, what should never be placed in your container?

From Quiz Geocaching- A Family Hobby

Answer: Edible or scented items

Anything that is edible or scented can attract wildlife in the area and can result in your cache being damaged or destroyed. Other items that are considered illegal are drugs, alcohol, lighters and knives.

11. When you want to join in the geocaching hobby it is important to assemble your TOTT, which means Tools Of The _____.

From Quiz Tales of Geocaching

Answer: Trade

What kind of tools might be useful when pursuing the geocaching hobby? I would highly suggest making sure that you have a working flashlight, and bringing a couple of new batteries along as well! If you have a nice mobile phone, it may have a geocaching app with GPS, as well as a camera, which is a must because it is so much fun to post photos! A small mirror makes it easier to look under structures such as benches, and a nice pair of gloves will protect your hands when you are digging around. It may also be a good idea to bring along an extra pen or pencil, and don't forget to bring a notepad - in a waterproof pouch. And - if you are like me - you want to bring a small first aid kit - just in case! Honestly, the more you participate in the hobby, and depending on where you are willing to go to look for the geocache, the more tools you will want to add to your kit.

12. The first recognised website for logging hides or finds did not actually use the word 'cache or Geocache in its name. What was the word they used?

From Quiz Geocaching - Early History

Answer: Stash

On May 30th 2000, a gent named Matt Stum suggested the name "Geocaching", a cross between Geography and cache (or secret a hide). It was felt that the word "Stash" had some negative baggage associated with it.

GPSr is slang for the Global Positioning System receiver. GPSrs are used in navigation and received signals.

14. The geocaching term "BOP" means:

From Quiz Geocaching terms-Learn caching terms and practice

Answer: Base of post

Many times, these are in street signposts. Due to there not being as many posts on trails as there are in urban areas.

15. An EarthCache is a special type of cache. Who oversees the EarthCache program in the US?

From Quiz Geocaching- A Family Hobby

Answer: Geological Society of America (GSA)

An EarthCache requires a visit to a unique geological feature. EarthCaches do not have containers or logbooks. They are designed to be educational and give an earth science lesson as well as highlighting a geological feature. Many countries have their own geological societies, which can serve as a good source of local earth science information and help with EarthCache placement rules.

16. One of the most fun aspects of being a geocacher is finding SWAG at a geocache, which means Stuff We All _____.

From Quiz Tales of Geocaching

Answer: Get

While a geocache would typically contain a log sheet, many times other items are found there too. These items may or may not be valuable; sometimes they are just inexpensive trinkets, however, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! An important rule to follow is that if you take an item from the geocache, you must leave one of equal value. Did you know that there is good swag and bad swag? Examples of good swag would be items such as new batteries, unexpired coupons, or foreign coins. Lighters, weapons, and anything illegal is considered to be bad swag.

17. What was the surname of the person who first registered the domain "Geocaching.com", and started a new database for cache hides and finds?

From Quiz Geocaching - Early History

18. What does "GZ" stand for and what does it mean?

From Quiz Geocaching terms-Learn caching terms and practice

Answer: Base of tree

If you cache a lot, you will notice that there are more of this type of cache than you think!

20. To a geocacher, why is ROT-13 an important tool?

From Quiz Geocaching- A Family Hobby

Answer: For encoding and decoding

ROT-13 is a simple substitution of letters that can be used to encode and decode hints on a cache page. It can also be used effectively to help create Mystery/Puzzle caches. It replaces the actual letter with the 13th letter after it i.e. A=N, B=O, C= P etc. So the word QUIZ would be written as DHVM. ROT-13 is the most well known ROT cipher but other ROT's also can be used.

21. One of the first acronyms a newbie in the geocaching hobby learns is CITO, which stands for Cache In Trash _____.

From Quiz Tales of Geocaching

Answer: Out

Geocachers are expected to show respect for the environment. In fact, cleaning up trash around geocaching sites is an important part of the hobby. Sometimes there are special events, called C.I.T.O. Events, that are planned as a group activity, however, it is important for each geocacher to always pick up litter. In fact, special trash bags, called C.I.T.O. bags can even be purchased from geocaching vendors for the purpose of keeping the site clean.

22. In what US state was the first "Event cache" held?

From Quiz Geocaching - Early History

Answer: Texas

This was in Austin, Texas, on March 24th 2001. An event cache is a social get together of fellow geocachers, often with food and drink. An event cache is a "cache find" in its own right, simply by turning up. Although new caches are often placed near to the event location.

23. Which would be an example of a "hitchhiker"?

From Quiz Geocaching Terms

24. The multi-cache is one of the more challenging cache types. As the name indicates, completing this cache involves multiple stages. What is the absolute minimum number of stages required for a geocache to be considered a multi-cache?

From Quiz Geocaching Part Deux: Cache Types

Answer: 2 & two

Some multi-caches will have as many as six stages. The stages can be within close range of each other (500 ft.) or could be sprawled across a whole state. Usually, each stage will provide the coordinates or some clue to help find the next stage.

25. As you prepare to go looking for your first cache, you read in the cache description that some degree of stealth might be required due to the amount of non-geocachers present in the area. What is the common geocaching term for non-geocachers?

From Quiz Geocaching - Where You Are the Search Engine

Answer: Geomuggles

Adapted from J.K. Rowling's use of muggle to denote non-magical people in the Harry Potter universe, the term geomuggle is used to denote non-geocachers. Stealth is often a good practice to employ because curiosity can easily lead to geocache sprouting legs and walking off.

Answer: Bring your own pen

Make sure to always bring one of these!

27. In the Geocaching world, what/who is a Muggle?

28. It is very disappointing for a geocacher to write DNF in a log book. This stands for Did Not _____.

From Quiz Tales of Geocaching

Answer: Find

This message on a log is very important as it might notify the cache owner that there are issues with finding the geocache, or alert them to the fact that their cache has been removed without their knowledge. It may also warn other geocachers that the geocache is particularly tricky to find.

29. Who found Dave Ulmer's original cache first?

From Quiz Geocaching - Early History

Answer: Mike Teague

Mike Teague found the "stash" within a coupe of days, and began to compile his "GPS Stash Hunt" database shortly thereafter.
