Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In most of the United States, what is the name of a confection made with shaved or ground-up ice topped with flavored syrup?

Answer: snow cone

The snow cone originated sometime after the mid-19th century, when advances in transportation and refrigeration technology permitted ice to be widely available, even in summertime. In some regions of the USA (and Canada), if the ice is finely shaven it's called a snowball.

In parts of Texas and Mexico, it's a raspa or a raspado. Keep going South to Costa Rica, and it's a copo (flake). Hop on a boat to Malaysia, and you can get an ais kacang. Or fly over to India for a gola on a popsicle stick.

6. What is the main flavor in the Italian dessert tiramisu?

Answer: Coffee

Tiramisu is a coffee-flavored Italian dessert made from ladyfingers dipped in coffee, eggs, sugar, mascarpone cheese, and cocoa. The name comes from Italian for 'pick me up' or 'cheer me up.' It was invented sometime in the 1960s or 1970s as the word tiramisu was not found in any cookbooks prior to then.

There is some speculation that it was invented toward the end of the seventeenth century as a way to honor a Grand Duke. Regardless of exactly when it was created, it is a delicious dessert!

9. Vol-au-vents are small morsels capable of holding a variety of fillings. What is the main constituent of a vol-au-vent, which surrounds the filling?

Answer: Pastry

Roughly translated from the French for 'blown by the wind', vol-au-vents are small, round pastry cases that can be sweet or savoury, depending on the filling. They are usually served as hors d'oeuvres because of their size and their relative culinary "lightness". Puff pastry is most often used to make vol-au-vents, but it is not unheard of to use Danish dough, though this is mainly used when the filling is to be sweet.

It was Antonin Caręme, the French chef and pâtissier, that created this delicious hors d'oeuvre in the early nineteenth century.

10. In which landlocked central European country would you be able to enjoy a slice (or maybe two) of a delicious, caramel-topped layer cake called Dobos torte?

Answer: Hungary

With its many sponge layers filled with luscious chocolate buttercream and its shiny, golden caramel topping, Dobos torte is nothing short of a showstopper. This masterpiece of pastry-making was created by Hungarian pastry chef Jószef C. Dobos (who gave it his name), and first introduced in 1888 at the National General Exhibition of Budapest.

The chocolate buttercream was also invented by Dobos, who later donated the cake recipe to the Pastry and Honey Makers' Guild; the caramel topping prevents the cake from drying out. Dobos torte is one of the symbols of Hungarian cuisine, and can be enjoyed in most Hungarian cafés and pastry shops, such as Budapest's historic Café Gerbeaud. None of the remaining countries is landlocked; moreover, Bulgaria is not considered part of Central Europe.
