Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Acclaim
Answer: Knaves of the Deepwood
Acclaim is placed by some actions and some battles that the Knaves take. Taking certain actions with a captain in a clearing with an acclaim token can boost the effect, but mostly they are used to generate points (1 point for every two tokens on the board at the end of their turn).
2. Assembly
Answer: Twilight Council
Assembly tokens are double-sided, with a closed side and a governing side. The Twilight Council generates points by having governing assemblies in clearings with other player's tokens or buildings. To help with this, the Twilight Council will add their warriors to any defenders in a clearing with an assembly token.
But maybe this help will be less appreciated when the Council's governing assemblies prevent those buildings and tokens from doing anything (including crafting).
3. Enclave
Answer: Lilypad Diaspora
The enclaves represent the Lilypad Diaspora trying to reintegrate with the Woodland. The tokens are double-sided, with a peaceful side and a militant side. The peaceful side adds the frog suit to the clearing's original suit, and can help with card draw and victory point generation.
The militant side covers the original suit with the frog suit, and helps to recruit warriors and initiate battles.
4. Mob
Answer: Lord of the Hundreds
Mob tokens remove enemy cardboard pieces in their clearings (tokens and buildings), but not warriors. This is one of the few ways buildings and tokens can be removed without having to battle down all the warriors protecting them first. Mob tokens also remove Ruins pieces, opening those hidden building slots, which used to only be available to the Vagabond.
5. Plot
Answer: Corvid Conspiracy
The Corvids have four different kinds of plot tokens: extort. snare, raid, and bomb, which they place face-down. On a subsequent turn, if the Corvids have a warrior in the clearing with the plot, they can flip it up, and then score points equal to the total number of face-up plots, as well as gain the effect. The Corvids can generate a lot of points very fast if left unchecked.
6. Relic
Answer: Keepers in Iron
The Keepers in Iron play a convoluted game of moving relic tokens from the forests into clearings, then moving the relics to a clearing with a matching waystation, and then removing the relic to the Keepers' player board to score the printed value of points on the token.
When the game starts, the Keepers can see what kind of relics are in each forest, but don't know their values until they've been moved into clearings (Delved).
The Keepers can recover multiple relics with one action, and get bonus points for every set of three different relics they recover. Opponents need to keep an eye on them because the Keepers can score points very suddenly.
7. Sympathy
Answer: Woodland Alliance
Sympathy tokens trigger Outrage whenever an opponent moves warriors into their clearings, or when one is removed from the board. Outrage forces that opponent to discard a card matching the clearing's suit to the Supporters stack (and if they can't, they have to reveal their hand and give the top card of the draw deck to the Supporters stack).
A sympathy token in a clearing is required at the start of Birdsong for the Woodland Alliance player to place a base, so other players can limit that option by strategically removing sympathy tokens.
8. Trade Post
Answer: Riverfolk Company
Placing a trade post is one way for the Riverfolk Company to gain victory points, and when a player has pieces in a clearing with a trade post, it increases how many services they can purchase from the Riverfolk Company.
Interestingly, the Riverfolk Company uses the open slots on their player board as crafting pieces (not the trade posts themselves), and removed trade post tokens are not returned to the Company's player board. So once a trade post is placed, that crafting component will be available for the rest of the game.
9. Tunnel
Answer: Underground Duchy
Any clearing with a tunnel token is adjacent to the Burrow, the Duchy's special clearing. The Duchy can spend a card to place a new tunnel token and show up almost anywhere with an army to disrupt other players' plans. Interestingly, clearings with tunnel tokens are not adjacent to each other; only the Burrow.
10. Wood
Answer: Marquise de Cat
Wood tokens are placed at sawmills at the beginning of each Marquise turn, and are spent to place new buildings. A wood token must be able to trace a line of ruled clearings from its location to the new building location, and this rule is the only time in "Root" that a chain of ruled clearings is needed.
