No Surprises Trivia Quiz
No shocking twists. No dramatic reveals. No sudden developments. Just a collection of words and a simple question: which of them are genuine antonyms of 'surprise'?
A collection quiz

Estimated time: 3 mins.
The word 'surprise' comes into English through Old French from a verb meaning to seize, overtake, or catch unexpectedly. The earliest senses of the word referred to being suddenly attacked, captured, or confronted without warning. Over time, the meaning broadened beyond physical ambush to include unexpected events, startling discoveries, and the emotional reaction that accompanies them. Today, surprise can describe both an unforeseen occurrence and the feeling of astonishment that follows when expectations are disrupted.
Because surprise is rooted in unexpectedness, its opposites tend to be words associated with expectation, certainty, preparation, prediction, and prior knowledge. These antonyms do not all oppose surprise in the same way. Some emphasize knowing what will happen beforehand, others describe being prepared for an event, while still others express confidence, reliability, or the absence of uncertainty. Together they form a spectrum of concepts that reduce or eliminate the element of being caught off guard.
Below is my list of terms that express opposition to or absence of surprise (arranged alphabetically). Some emphasize certainty and predictability, others focus on preparation and forewarning, and still others highlight familiarity or confidence. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list (I kept it to a tidy list of 20).
Assurance - A state of confidence or certainty that leaves little room for surprise.
Awareness - Possessing knowledge or understanding of a situation before it unfolds.
Certainty - Complete confidence that something will occur or is true.
Confidence - Trust in an outcome or expectation that reduces the likelihood of being surprised.
Dependability - The quality of being consistently reliable and predictable.
Expectation - The anticipation that something is likely to happen.
Familiarity - Knowledge gained through experience, making events or circumstances less surprising.
Foreknowledge - Information or awareness of something before it occurs.
Inevitability - The quality of being unavoidable or certain to happen.
Normality - The condition of being ordinary, routine, or expected.
Notice - Advance warning or information provided before an event takes place.
Planning - The act of preparing in advance for future actions or events.
Predictability - The quality of being expected or capable of being accurately forecast.
Premeditation - Prior thought or planning before an action occurs.
Preparation - Measures taken in advance to be ready for an expected event.
Reliability - Consistency and trustworthiness that make outcomes foreseeable.
Routine - A regular pattern of activity whose repetition minimizes surprise.
Understanding - Comprehension or knowledge that reduces uncertainty.
Verification - Confirmation that something is true, accurate, or expected.
Warning - Advance notice of a possible event, reducing the element of surprise.
And here are six red herrings that are not antonyms of surprise. Instead, they belong to different semantic groups associated with achievement, status, character, beauty, social harmony, or success. While they may sound abstract and important like many of the antonyms above, they do not directly express expectation, certainty, preparedness, or foreknowledge:
Ambition - A desire to achieve success or attain a goal, unrelated to whether an event is expected or unexpected.
Elegance - Grace, refinement, or beauty in appearance, style, or design rather than predictability or certainty.
Fortitude - Mental and emotional courage in the face of difficulty, describing resilience rather than preparedness.
Harmony - Agreement, balance, or peaceful coexistence, concerned with relationships rather than surprise or expectation.
Prestige - Respect, admiration, or social status earned through achievement or reputation.
Prosperity - A state of success, wealth, or flourishing circumstances, unrelated to anticipation or predictability.
