Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Olympias of Macedon

Olympias lived in the 4th century BC. She originally belonged to the Epirote clan of the Molossi, that was famous for its skills in breeding hounds throughout the Greek world. She got married to King Philip II of Macedon and gave birth to Alexander the Great.

Alexander was very fond of his mother and, upon embarking on his famous journey in Asia, appointed her as regent in Macedon, alongside Antipater, a trusted general and advisor. Olympias was also a member of the cult of Dionysus and her activities as part of it included handling snakes and placing them beside her on her bed.
2. Boudicca

Boudicca lived in the 1st century AD. She was the queen of the Iceni, a Celtic tribe in Britain. Her husband was called Prasutagus. When, after his death, the Romans sought to incorporate the lands of the Iceni to their empire, Boudicca led a revolt which was very costly for the Romans to suppress.

Although Roman sources frequently derided her as a barbarian, some authors, like Tacitus, expressed admiration for her and her people's love of freedom.
3. Amalasuntha

Amalasuntha was the daughter of Theoderic the Amal (also known as Theoderic the Otstrogoth), the King of Italy. When Theoderic died, he left her as regent. Yet she was opposed by the Kingdom's aristocracy, and was eventually forced to share rule with a nobleman named Theodahad, who eventually orchestrated her assassination in 536 AD.
4. Hildegard von Bingen

Hildegard von Bingen lived during the 12th century. Apart from works dealing with with the spiritual needs of her flock (she was abbess at a Benedictine monastery), she also dabbled in natural history, being the first person of German descent to cultivate this particular science. After her death, she was canonized by the Catholic Church.
5. Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc is one of the most famous women of all time. Born in Domremy, she heard voices that helped her find a hidden sword and rode all the way to meet the Dauphin of France. She succeeded in recognizing him among his nobles, even though she had never seen him before.

She led the French army in Orleans in 1429 and earned fame as a military leader before getting captured by the English and getting sentenced to death for heresy. In the 20th century, she was canonized.
6. Artemisia Gentileschi

Artemisia Gentileschi lived from 1593 to 1654 in Italy. One of the most important women of the early modern era, she was a painter of much renown, initially treading in the artistic footsteps of Caravaggio before finding her own unique style. She pursued her career even beyond Italy, working on commissions in England from 1638 to 1642.
7. Maria Theresa

Maria Theresa lived from 1717 to 1780 and led the Austrian Empire from 1740 until her death. The archetypal Enlightened monarch, she gave the green light for reforms in the sphere of education, for modernization of institutions, for the systematic improvement of medical care, and for a more pragmatic and robust handling of financial matters.

Although her vocal support for the Catholic Church meant that religious minorities, such as Protestants and Jews, faced some discrimination, her overall legacy for Austria and the peoples ruled by the Habsburgs has been viewed as being very positive.
8. Laskarina Bouboulina

Laskarina Bouboulina lived from 1771 to 1825. Born in Constantinople in 1771, she spent most of her life in the Greek island of Hydra. She attained fame as a naval commander during the Greek War of Independence, which she also supported financially, most notably in the siege of Nafplion, which became the first capital of independent Greece.
9. Lesya Ukrainka

Lesya Ukrainka's real name was Larysa Kozach. She lived from 1871 to 1913. An outstanding poet and playwright, she is one of the foremost names of Ukrainian literature. Her opus magnum is the poetic play "Forest Song", which was published in 1911. She also wrote several short stories, mostly inspired by Ukrainian folklore and fairy tales.
10. Golda Meir

Golda Meir was born in 1896 and died in 1978. She is most famous for being the first female Prime Minister of Israel, and for, despite the initial setback, being the political leader overseeing the Israeli victory in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Frequently, she is referred to as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics, in a manner similar to the description of Margaret Thatcher as Britain's "Iron Lady".
