Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is referred to in the King James Bible as the "Salt Sea"?

Answer: The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is actually a salt lake which is bordered by Israel and Palestine on the west and Jordan on the East. At 423 metres below sea level, it is Earth's lowest elevation on land. Its hypersalinity makes it impossible for animal life to exist, earning it its name.

The Dead Sea supplies a great many products, from salt and minerals used to create cosmetics and herbal sachets to potash for fertilizers to balms used by the Egyptians in the mummification process.

2. Which of these Christian denominations does NOT celebrate Christmas?

Answer: Jehovah's Witnesses

Jehovah's Witnesses identify as Christians, but they do not celebrate Christmas. They believe that Jesus Christ commanded his followers at the Last Supper to celebrate his death and resurrection, not his birth. Furthermore, the date of the 25th of December as Christ's birth has been disputed for centuries, and Jehovah's Witnesses do not see any Biblical evidence for that particular date, selected for its coincidence with pagan celebrations during the time of the Early Church.

3. Days before Jesus was crucified, he raised Mary and Martha's brother from the dead. What was the name of this man that Jesus called a friend?

Answer: Lazarus

Jesus arrived in Bethany four days after Lazarus had died. After he arrived in Bethany, Mary and Martha were upset because Jesus didn't arrive sooner. Jesus had several men remove the stone from Lazarus's tomb and then he told Lazarus to come out. Lazarus came out of his tomb still wrapped in the grave clothes. Jesus had men remove the grave clothes.

The story of Lazarus can be found in John 11.

4. What Jewish "holiday of lights" falls at the general time of Christmas and Kwanzaa?

Answer: Chanuka/ Hanukkah

Chanuka/Hanukkah celebrates the miracle when the Maccabees recovered the Temple and the oil for the lamps lasted for the eight days it took to produce more, although there was only enough for one.
During each of the eight nights of the holiday one additional candle is lit, the last night lighting all eight candles in the Hanukkiah. It is common to eat foodstuffs cooked in oil, such as donuts and potato-pancakes (latkes).

5. When Pope Formosus was tried in 897 for violating canonical law, he never uttered one word in his defense. Why was that?

Answer: He was dead.

Pope Formosus died 4 April 896. The next year, his successor, Pope Stephen VI, had his body dug up, dressed in papal vestments, and seated on a throne to face the charges against him. The corpse didn't offer much of a defense and was found guilty.

6. Medieval Europeans once argued that the barnacle goose actually grew out of barnacles on driftwood, making the animal a fish! Why did this argument appeal to Roman Catholics?

Answer: They can eat fish on abstinence days

On days of abstinence -- including most Fridays -- Roman Catholics are supposed to refrain from eating meat as an act of penance. Fish and shellfish don't count as meat, though. So if the barnacle goose is really a fish, then there's no problem eating its meat on an abstinence day. Medieval Catholics in Ireland and Scotland really made this argument, until Pope Innocent III insisted in 1215 that since the barnacle goose lived like a duck and ate like a duck, it was meat -- just like a duck.

7. Noah had three sons who went with him in the Ark. Which of those listed was NOT one of those sons?

Answer: Shadrach

Shadrach was a member of another Biblical trio, along with Meshach and Abednego, whose story is told in the book of Daniel. In short, for refusing to worship a golden statue they were thrown into a fiery furnace, and saved by God's intervention. Along with their father, Ham, Shem and Japheth survived the Great Flood as described in Genesis, and their descendants repopulated the world.

8. What feast day is being observed when people bring their animals to church on October 4th to have them blessed by a priest or other minister?

Answer: Saint Francis Day

October 4th is the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis' well-known love of animals has led to him being regarded as the patron saint of animals. On or near the 4th, people bring animals to church to be blessed. This typically involves dogs and cats but can also include police officers' horses, bees in a jar, fish in a bowl, hamsters, snakes, and birds.

In addition to blessing animals, some churches urge parishioners to bring and donate food and blankets as gifts to a local animal shelter on this day. Animal blessings on Saint Francis' Day are common to Roman Catholic and Anglican (Episcopal) churches but are becoming popular in other denominations, as well.

9. In the Catholic and Anglican faiths, a pyx is a very small round container holding the consecrated host. When is this used?

Answer: When visiting sick people

A pyx, which holds the consecrated host used during communion services in these faiths, is a small, round lidded container usually made of highly polished brass. Some may even be inlaid with gold. If members of any congregation are hospitalised, or too old and infirm at home to attend regular church services, the clergy of these religions can take the consecrated host, carried in one of these containers, and give it to them there during a brief communion service. I remember the pyx, all too well, and how the priest's hands shook as he carefully removed the host, but, as a child, it was associated more with pain and illness than holiness. Still, that's what Jesus was all about, wasn't he?

10. Where was the historical Paran Desert, as mentioned in the Books of Genesis and Exodus in the Bible?

Answer: NE Sinai Peninsula

Abraham would have passed through this region during his journeys detailed in Genesis 11-14. The Israelites' Exodus also passed through this desert on their way to the "Promised Land".
