Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which book of the Torah describes the Hebrews leaving Egypt?

Answer: Exodus

The Book of Exodus also describes the events at Mount Sinai, where God gave Moses the Torah and the Oral law.

2. The events of what book of the Old Testament are dramatized in the 1956 movie "The Ten Commandments"?

Answer: Exodus

The word "exodus" means a mass departure. The Book of Exodus (and the film) covers the story of Moses and the emancipation and flight of the Jews from Egypt to the promised land of Canaan. In the middle of that journey, Moses receives the Ten Commandments from God.

3. The Altar Guild is preparing for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. One asks, "Are we using communion wafers or real bread?" What's the difference?

Answer: one is unleavened, one is leavened

The bread used in the celebration of Holy Communion, Holy Eucharist or the Mass may be leavened or unleavened. Leavened bread is that which contains yeast and is raised before baking into loaves. Unleavened bread is made without yeast and is normally dehydrated rather than baked to produce wafers which are shaped like coins (although other shapes are also used).

The bread is sometimes called altar bread or the host or communion bread or the Lamb. Unleavened bread made with rice flour is available for those suffering from Celiac disease (although this may not be considered "valid matter" by some Roman Catholic authorities). For many centuries, communion wafers were produced by communities of nuns. Now it is more common to use wafers made by a machine which are "untouched by human hands."

4. Finish this Bible verse found on Matthew 5:4 (KJV): "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be ________".

Answer: Comforted

Matthew 5:1-12 describes the Sermon on The Mount by Jesus Christ, often called the Beatitudes for the sermon's message of blessings coming to the followers of God. Matthew 5:4 in the King James' Bible says, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted".

5. If I pray for myself and my needs and concerns, the prayer is called petition. What is it called if I pray for you, your needs and concerns?

Answer: intercession

Saint Paul wrote to Timothy, "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men" (I Tim. 2:1, KJV). Intercession is the act of praying for or on behalf of another person; the result is called intercessory prayer.

The word derives from Latin words meaning to stand between. In a sense, the intercessor stands between God and the person for whom she is praying. Jesus set an example of this by the many times he prayed for others, as recorded in the Gospels.

6. Before Jesus began his ministry, he was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river. How is John the Baptist related to Jesus?

Answer: His cousin

John the Baptist is the son of Elizabeth, cousin to Mary, Jesus' mother. In Matthew 3:3, it was said that John was the one who fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, that he was the one sent to "prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him."

7. There is a lecture at a Christian Church tonight entitled "It Is All About the Pentateuch." What is the Pentateuch?

Answer: the first five books of the Bible

The Books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy compose the Pentateuch. The word, from the Greek, means "five books." The Jewish term for these five books is "Torah" which means "law." The Pentateuch contains much of the foundational matter of the Hebrew Scriptures: the Creation, Adam and Eve, the Tower of Babel, the Flood, Abraham and Sarah, Moses and the Exodus, and the Ten Commandments.

8. In which modern region would you find the location of Saint Patrick's first mission settlement?

Answer: Armagh, Northern Ireland

Saint Patrick is the most commonly recognised Patron Saint of Ireland. Originally from Cumbria, he was enslaved in Ireland for six years, working as a herdsman before escaping. During his enslavement he prayed and became close to God. He returned to Ireland as a Bishop where he worked in the north and west.

Many historians accept that he died on March 17th, 493 AD. The day is now widely celebrated as "Saint Patrick's Day".

9. My name means "Gift Of God", and I took Judas' place as the 12th apostle after his suicide and death. Who am I?

Answer: Matthias

St. Matthias was the one chosen to replace Judas to make up the number of apostles to twelve once more. Matthias was one of the first followers of Jesus and one of his 72 disciples, but not one of the original apostles. After Judas' death the rest of the apostles nominated two men: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias.

They prayed and drew lots. The choice fell upon Matthias, who was added to the apostles.
