Sometimes Three Can Be Company Quiz

Two is company and three is a crowd goes an old saying. But going by the Bible, three can also be company. Inspiration for this quiz came from Emily Filipi's book '3,285 Bible Questions and Answers'. The NKJV was used for this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three sons of Noah (Genesis 5:22)

Answer: Shem, Ham, and Japheth

Shem, Ham, and Japheth were the three sons of Noah, as per Genesis 5:22. According to Scripture, Noah and his wife, and their three sons and their three wives were able to take refuge in a gigantic ark and survive a massive flood that engulfed the world.
2. Three friends of Jesus (John 11:15)

Answer: Mary, Martha and Lazarus

Mary, Martha and Lazarus were three friends of Jesus who lived in Bethany, a village just outside of Jerusalem. In fact, John 11:5 states Jesus "loved" the trio. Mary and Martha were sisters who lived with their brother Lazarus.

The eleventh chapter of John tells of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead even though he had been dead for four days.
3. Three men in a fiery furnac (Daniel 3:12)

Answer: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego ended up being thrown into a fiery furnace and miraculously survived. Details can be found in Daniel 3:8-25.

The three Jewish men were tossed into the furnace when they refused King Nebuchadnezzar's command to bow and worship a golden statue.

Scripture states the king's officials were astounded when they looked into the furnace and saw the men were not hurt. And then when the king looked inside the furnace he was dumbfounded. Verse 25 in the NKJV states: "'Look!' he answered, 'I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.'"
4. Top three mighty men of David (2 Samuel 23:8-39)

Answer: Josheb-basshebeth, Eleazar and Shammah

David had 37 elite warriors under him, according to 2 Samuel 23:8-39. However, out of the 37, the top three mighty men were Josheb-Basshebeth, the Tachmonite; Eleazar, the son of Dodo, the Ahohite; and Shammah the son of Agee, the Hararite.

According to Verse 8, Josheb-Basshebeth had killed 800 men at one time in battle.

In addition to being loyal to David, the mighty men were known for their deep devotion to God.
5. Three daughters of Job (Job 42:14)

Answer: Jemimah, Keziah and Keren-Happuch

Job's three daughters were Jemimah, Keziah (also spelled Kaziah), and Keren-Happuch. According to Job 42:15 in the NKJV, "In all the land were found no women so beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers."

The three daughters, as well as seven sons, were born to Job after his period of severe suffering. Interestingly, the names of the seven sons are not listed in Scripture.
6. Three friends of Job (Job 2:11)

Answer: Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar

Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar visited Job with the intention of offering support and comfort as he had lost seven sons and three daughters as well as all of his immense material wealth. However, his friends were a source of aggravation as they basically blamed him for all the problems he faced. Later, a fourth person would visit Job. His name was Elihu.

The Book of Job ends on a happy note with Job once again becoming the father of seven sons and three daughters and acquiring more material wealth then he initially had.
7. Three disciples on Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1)

Answer: Peter, James and John

Peter, James and John were taken up to Mount of Transfiguration with Christ, as per Matthew 17:1. To the amazement of the three disciples, Jesus was transfigured, having a radiant face and wearing clothes that were intensely bright. Also on hand for the event were Moses and Elijah from the Old Testament.

Verse 5 tells of what happened next: "...a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!'"
8. The three named sons of Adam and Eve (Genesis 4:25)

Answer: Cain, Abel and Seth

The three named sons of Adam and Eve were Cain, Abel and Seth. However, it was anything but a harmonious relationship as Scripture tells of Cain killing Abel out of a severe fit of jealousy. After Abel's death, Eve gave birth to Seth.

After Abel's death, other sons and daughters were born to Adam and Eve, as per Genesis 5:4. However, Cain, Abel and Seth are the only named offspring.
9. Three baptisms of men by Paul, as per 1 Corinthians 1:14-16

Answer: Crispus, Gaius, and Stephanas

In 1 Corinthians, Paul makes mention of being involved in the baptisms of three men.

According to 1 Corinthians 1:14-16, he baptized Crispus, Gaius, and the household of Stephanas. And then Paul states he does not remember baptizing anyone else.

The verses in the NKJV read this way: "I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other."

Corinth was a city in southern Greece and was part of an important trade route.
10. Three sons of Anak (Joshua 15:14)

Answer: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai

Anak lived in Hebron and his offspring were noted for their super height and strength. Joshua 15 tells of Caleb being successful in a military campaign against Anak's three sons -- Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai. This definitely wasn't a case of three being company.

Some Websites suggest the name Anak is associated with the word for "long neck," reinforcing the belief the people were truly large.

On top of this, some scholars link the people of Anak with the Nephilim of Genesis.
