Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's begin with a few questions about different types of phobias and what they are a fear of. Arachnophobia is a fear of which of these?

Answer: spiders

The word "arachnophobia" comes from the Greek words arachne and phobia. For those seeking to overcome arachnophobia, this could potentially be done through the use of exposure therapy, which involves conceptually using spiders in relaxing, risk-free situations and exposing them to the phobia in tension-free scenarios.

In fact, physician Randolph M Neese has suggested that arachnophobic people seeking to shed their fear should watch "Spider Man" movies.
2. What do you fear if you have pyrophobia?

Answer: fire

Worth noting, because fire is... well, dangerous, it is natural for anyone to feel fearful of it without necessarily being pyrophobic. Being pyrophobic doesn't mean feeling apprehensive at the thought of running into a burning building. It means fearing fire in ways which would be considered irrational.

This can certainly be a bit of a grey area because, as mentioned earlier, it is rational and not phobic to be merely wary of the presence of fire. It is considered phobic if merely sensing fire or smoke triggers abnormal terror in someone.
3. Let's go with one that hits me personally right at home! What is the word for a fear of bees?

Answer: Apiophobia

Ailurophobia is the fear of cats, claustrophobia is the fear of tight spaces, while honeybeephobia isn't real. Apiophobia is the fear of bees, and is something I personally contend with. It doesn't just refer to bees as it can sometimes extend to wasps and hornets as well.

It is worth noting that, people who are allergic to bees who fear them for this reason are not considered phobic. It is people who fear them irrationally, even though not at risk, who are phobic.
4. If your child doesn't like Santa Claus, they could be phobic. What is the term for fearing ol' Saint Nick?

Answer: Santaphobia

Santaphobia may also be referred to as Clausophobia. This should not be confused with claustrophobia, which is a fear of tight spaces. Santaphobia is often found in children who could be as old as five or six. Once someone rationally comes to understand that Santa Claus doesn't exist, they are likely to quickly kick this phobia without the need for common methods like exposure therapy.

This is why Santaphobia is far more common in young children who are not of the age to rationalize Santa's fictionality.
5. What is a 'social' phobia?

Answer: A fear of social situations

Specifically, this phobia makes its victims fearful of embarrassing themselves in social scenarios, or of being watched or judged by their peers. It is thought to mainly develop in pre-adolescents or teenagers, though it is theoretically capable of developing as soon as someone becomes largely cognizant of themselves in a public/social scenario.
6. Which of these describes agoraphobia?

Answer: A fear and anxiety of going outside the home

Specifically, agoraphobia makes its victims fear scenarios in which they cannot escape a public situation. An example might be how you might want to attend a party or social function, but being afraid that the function will be so heavily populated that you may not be able to get away easily.

As such, agoraphobic people are likely to want to avoid these situations.
7. I personally feel really bad for you if you have this. What are you fearful of if you have ludectrophobia?

Answer: Video Games

Ludectrophobia refers to being fearful of video games or environments where video games are present. The fear may relate to gameplay itself or past negative experiences involved with gaming.

Particularly in 21st century gaming, some video games have progression mechanics or are convoluted in other ways, which may be overwhelming even to people lacking ludectrophobia, let alone those who are phobic.
8. In 2016, clowns became a cultural phenomenon in the US thanks to a large group of very strange people. If you didn't like these strange people, you may have a fear of clowns. What is this called?

Answer: Coulrophobia

Hemophobia is a fear of blood, and the other two incorrect options were entirely made up. It is coulrophobia which represents an irrational fear of clowns. While they can be light-hearted, clowns have been represented in numerous darker ways that can make people fearful of them.

In media and movies such as "IT" and "Terrifier" feature murderous clowns who kill people in extremely graphic ways. Even in the real world, clowns have been represented in numerous different ways across history.
9. Try pronouncing this one without cheating. What fear does someone have if they have kakorrhaphiophobia?

Answer: Fear of failure/defeat

Everyone on this planet must have some degree of fear towards failure, especially when the stakes in life rise more and more. However, kakorrhaphiophobia refers to an irrational fear of failure. Something like being afraid to participate in skipping stones because you're afraid your friend will do it better. Think of it like being extreme perfectionism.
10. People who are scatterbrained or perhaps elderly would not enjoy athazagoraphobia. What is this a fear of?

Answer: Forgetting or being forgotten

Athazagoraphobia is a fear of either forgetting something crucial, or a fear of being forgotten. To clarify, "being forgotten" in this context does not refer to your friend letting their meetup with you slip their mind by accident. It refers to being entirely forgotten about as a person, completely.

It refers to someone being fearful that they'll fade away into obscurity, or be abandoned completely.
