Thirty-two teams were divided into 8 groups. The group winners and runners-up qualified for the round of 16.

Group A: Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, Philippines
Switzerland qualified for the next round with 5 points from 1 win and 2 draws. Norway and New Zealand finished equal second with 4 points from 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss. Norway progressed on goal difference.

Group B: Australia, Nigeria, Canada, Ireland
Australia topped the group with 6 points from 2 wins and 1 loss. Nigeria was second with 5 points from 1 win and 2 draws (their win was 3-2 against Australia).

Group C: Japan, Spain, Zambia, Costa Rica
Japan won the group with maximum 9 points from 3 wins. Spain finished second with 6 points from 2 wins (they lost badly to Japan 0-4).

Group D: England, Denmark, China, Haiti
England was the group winner with 9 points from 3 wins, followed by Denmark with 6 points from 2 wins and 1 loss. England scored a big 6-1 win over China.

Group E: Netherlands, USA, Portugal, Vietnam
Netherlands topped the group with 7 points from 2 wins and 1 draw. USA (no. 1 seed) finished second with 5 points from 1 win and 2 draws. Vietnam finished with 0 points and conceded 12 goals, losing 0-3 to the USA, then 0-2 to Portugal and 0-7 to Netherlands in their last group match.

Group F: France, Jamaica, Brazil, Panama
France was the group winner with 7 points from 2 wins and 1 draw, followed by Jamaica with 5 points from 1 win and 2 draws. Brazil (no. 8 seed) surprisingly was eliminated with 4 points from 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss -- they lost 1-2 to France and were held to a 0-0 draw by Jamaica in the last group match (a win would've seen them progress out of the group stage).

Group G: Sweden, South Africa, Italy, Argentina
Sweden won all 3 matches to top the group with 9 points. South Africa qualified for the next round with 4 points from 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss.

Group H: Colombia, Morocco, Germany, South Korea
Colombia won the group with 6 points from 2 wins and 1 draw. Morocco was second with the same points but with an inferior goal difference (they losy their opening match 0-6 to Germany). Germany (no. 2 seed) was eliminated with 4 points.

In the round of 16, Spain defeated Switzerland 5-1, Netherlands beat South Africa 2-0, Japan beat Norway 3-1, U.S.A lost to Sweden (4-5 on penalty kicks) with the score at 0-0 after extra time, Australia beat Denmark 2-0, France trounced Morocco 4-0, England beat Nigeria (4-2 on penalty kicks, 0-0 after extra-time) and Colombia edged Morocco 1-0.

In the quarter-final stage, Spain beat Netherlands 2-1 aet, Japan lost to Sweden 1-2, Australia beat France (7-6 on penalty kicks, 0-0 aet) and England defeated Colombia 2-1.

In the semi-final stage, Spain beat Sweden 2-1 and England defeated Australia 3-1.

In the final played at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, Spain beat England 1-0 to win their first world title. Sweden finished third when they beat Australia 2-0.

Spanish player Aitana Bonmati was voted the best player in the tournament. Hinata Miyazwa of Japan was the top scorer with 6 goals. Mary Earps of England won the best goalkeeper award. A total of 164 (2.56 goals per match) goals were scored in the 64 matches. The attendance for all the matches was 1.98 million.
