Dennis Bergkamp began his football career with his hometown team Ajax. He came through the club's youth system, and made his first team debut aged 17 in a match against Roda JC. His club manager at the time was the legendary Johan Cruyff.

During his Ajax career, Bergkamp won two Dutch Cups, the Cup Winners' Cup (in 1987) and the UEFA Cup (in 1992). Ajax missed out on taking part in the Champions Cup in season 1900-91 due to fan disorder during the previous season.

Bergkamp found the Italian club's tactics difficult to adjust to, but did end the season with some silverware, when Inter defeated Salzburg in the final of the 1993-94 UEFA Cup.

Dennis Berkamp won his first Dutch cap when he came on as a substitute for Frank de Boer in a game against Italy in September 1990. Two months later he would score his first international goal, against Greece.

All three FA Cup finals won by Arsenal between 2002 and 2005 took place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff while the new Wembley was being built. Chelsea were defeated 2-0 in 2002, Southampton were bettered 1-0 the following year, and the 2005 final vs Manchester United ended goalless, with Arsenal triumphing in a penalty shoot-out. Bergkamp failed to score in any of the finals, and had been substituted before the penalty shoot-out in 2005.

Arsenal did beat Hull City in an FA Cup final, but that was in 2014 after Bergkamp had retired.

Bergkamp did the "double" of Player of the Year awards by both the Football Writers Association and the Professional Footballers Association, and was the first Dutchman to win either. His goal against Leicester City at Filbert Street won the BBC's annual goal of the season competition. In the voting for UEFA's Ballon d'Or award, he finished equal 8th, way behind winner Zinedine Zidane.

The 1998 World Cup took place in France, and Bergkamp scored three times for The Netherlands, including a last minute winner against Argentina in the quarter-finals. The semi-final against Brazil, in Marseille, ended in a 1-1 draw, and Bergkamp successfully converted his penalty in the shoot-out.

Unfortunately, two of his team-mates missed, and Brazil progressed to the final where they would lose to the host nation.

Dennis Bergkamp's final season at Arsenal coincided with club's last at Highbury, before they moved to the Emirates Stadium. He came off the bench in the last league game there against Wigan Athletic, but was an unused substitute in the Champions League final when Barcelona came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1.

Answer: Aviophobia

Aviophobia, or Aerophobia, is the intense fear/dislike of flying. Bergkamp developed this during his spell in Italy, when Inter Milan regularly flew to away games on small aircraft. After this he refused to fly, travelling to away games by train or car, which meant he missed a number of UEFA competition games and international matches.
