Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What team drafted Kobe Bryant?

Answer: Charlotte Hornets

Kobe was drafted by Charlotte with the 13th overall pick in the 1996 draft, and then was traded to the Lakers.
2. Kobe Bryant ended with a whole number for a career average in points per game. How many PPG did he have for his entire career?

Answer: 25

Kobe achieved his peak scoring in 2005, with an absurd 35.4 that was by far his career best. He followed that season up with a strong 31.6, and didn't exceed 30 again in any other season he would play. Of course, towards the end of his career, he did slow down a bit as any aging player would, causing his career PPG to 'slip' to a still robust 25.
3. Kobe Bryant was known for his grit and toughness on the court. How many seasons did he play a full 82/82 games?

Answer: 4

It is worth noting that, in 2001 and 2005, the only reason he didn't reach 82 games was that the Lakers had played so well, they secured the #1 seed in the West and opted to rest their starters for the final two games of those seasons. If the Lakers had needed Kobe to play, he assuredly would have reached 82 games in those two seasons.

The four seasons were: 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2010 -- Kobe managed a full 82 games without taking any off. As mentioned above, he had some years where he would have reached 82. In addition, he fell very short of 82 in 1997 (79), 2006 (77) and 2012 (78).
4. How many times was Kobe Bryant an All-Star in the NBA?

Answer: 18

Kobe's rookie season in 1996 is the only year in which he was not named to the All-Star game. Having said that, he only played six games in 2013 yet was named anyway, so towards the end of his career, it's fair to argue he became somewhat of a 'legacy' pick for the game.
His 18 All-Star games were 1998, 2000-2016.
5. Did Kobe Bryant ever win a slam dunk contest?

Answer: Yes

Yes - he won the NBA Sam Dunk Contest in February 1997. Tim Duncan and Patrick Ewing played in this contest.
6. Kobe Bryant was aggressive, and maybe a touch reckless as well. His shooting percentage numbers reflect this: a 45% shooting percentage is generally considered "good" in the NBA. Did Kobe have more, or less, seasons shooting at or above 45%?

Answer: Kobe had more seasons with > 45% shooting percentage

In 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015, Kobe had less than a 45% shooting percentage from the field. That is eight seasons.
In 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 (45.1%!), 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 (45.1% again!) and 2012, Kobe exceeded 45% shooting from the field. That is ten seasons.
Bizarrely, in 2005 which was his career best season, he was right at exactly 45% on the nose!
7. The lion's share of Kobe's career, of course comes with him as part of the starting five with the Los Angeles Lakers. That said, he actually has significant experience coming off the bench. How many games did Kobe Bryant come off the bench and play for, thus not starting?

Answer: 148

Kobe came off the bench 65 times in his rookie season, another 78 times the following year in 1997, four more times in 1999, then once more in 2003. After that point, Kobe Bryant never again played in a game where he wasn't a starter. He played 1,346 games in his career.
8. Kobe Bryant won league MVP on one occasion. In which season did he do this?

Answer: 2008

2005 was statistically Kobe Bryant's best season, but 2008 was quite strong as well. In this season, Kobe averaged 26.8 points per game on 46% shooting to go with 5 assists and rebounds a game. He also played in all 82 regular season games that year, the only player on the Lakers to do so.
9. In the end, roughly how many points total did Kobe Bryant score?

Answer: Between 30,000 and 35,000

Kobe Bryant scored 33,643 points in the NBA. At the time of retirement in 2015, he was third on the NBA's all-time scoring leaders list behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387 pts) and Karl Malone (36,928 pts), though LeBron James passed him not too long after he retired; pushing down to 4th all-time.
10. Kobe Bryant has had two numbers retired by the Lakers. Which of the following is one of them?

Answer: 8

From his rookie year in 1996 up to 2005, Kobe wore the number 8. After that year until his retirement in 2015, he donned the number 24. Both numbers were retired by the Lakers, the first time in NBA history a player had two separate numbers retired by a single organization.
