Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which iconic stadium, named after the club's long-time president, did Real Madrid play their home matches in 2003-04?

Answer: Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid started playing in their famous Santiago Bernabeu stadium in 1947, three years after its construction began. The project was spearheaded by Santiago Bernabeu de Yeste, who played football professionally with Real Madrid in the 1910s and 1920s and then became the club's president for over 30 years. Out of the 19 La Liga matchdays played at home, Real Madrid won only 12 of them, with most of the losses happening towards the end of the season.
2. Which French superstar, who later managed Real Madrid, wore number 5 on his shirt for "Los Galacticos" during the 2003-04 season?

Answer: Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane is one of Real Madrid's most legendary players. The French attacking midfielder arrived at Real Madrid in 2001 from Italy's Juventus, and stayed in the Spanish club until his retirement in 2006. Zidane was one of the only French players on the main roster for the 2003-04 season.

He scored six goals in La Liga matches during this season. Years later, Zidane managed Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, and then again between 2019 and 2021.
3. Which goalkeeper played in all but one of the La Liga games for Real Madrid in the 2003-04 season?

Answer: Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas was the undisputed first choice to defend Real Madrid as their goalkeeper in the 2003-2004 season. Casillas had a long and decorated career with Madrid, winning multiple league titles and Champions League cups. He also won the World Cup with Spain in 2010. Casillas played the overwhelming majority of Real Madrid's matches in 2003-04.

When he wasn't playing, his substitute was Cesar Sanchez, who received four goals in the only league match he played. Kahn played for Bayern Munich at this time.
4. Which English superstar joined Real Madrid in 2003, after a very successful run with Manchester United?

Answer: David Beckham

Real Madrid created quite a splash when they announced that David Beckham would be joining the team in 2003. Beckham had consolidated himself in Manchester United's main roster but left after well-publicized differences with coach Alex Ferguson, who at one point threw a boot at Beckham. Beckham was signed by Real Madrid in the summer of 2003. David Beckham scored seven goals in the 2003-04 season, one of them in a Champions League match against Olympique de Marseille.
5. Which Portuguese manager took over Real Madrid in 2003, succeeding Vicente del Bosque?

Answer: Carlos Queiroz

Despite leading Real Madrid to the Spanish league title in the preceding season, Vicente del Bosque was sacked by the team in 2003. The dismissal coincided with the departure of captain Fernando Hierro, who allegedly had been having issues with the coach. Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz took on what was likely the most important challenge of his career when he signed for Real Madrid in 2003. Before, he had coached the national teams of Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa.
6. Did Real Madrid win the 2003 Spanish Supercup against Mallorca?

Answer: Yes

The 2003 Supercopa was contested between Real Madrid (the previous season's league champion) and Mallorca (the previous Copa del Rey winner). Mallorca won in the first leg by a 2-1 score with goals by Arnold Bruggink and Samuel Eto'o. However, Real Madrid emerged victorious a few days later by obtaining a decisive 3-0 victory in the second leg. Madrid's only goal in the first leg was by Luis Figo; the second leg's goals were shared by Raul, Ronaldo, and David Beckham.
7. Which Brazilian "phenomenon" was Real Madrid's top-scorer in the 2003-04 season?

Answer: Ronaldo

Ronaldo, whose full name is Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima and is nicknamed "the phenomenon," is a Brazilian striker who joined Real Madrid in 2002. Before playing for "Los Galacticos", Ronaldo had made quite an impression in all of his previous teams: Cruzeiro, PSV, Barcelona, and Inter Milan. Ronaldo scored 24 goals in Real Madrid's league matches in the 2003-04 season.

He also scored 4 goals in the Champions League, more than any other Real Madrid player.
8. Real Madrid faced their rivals Barcelona twice in the 2003-04 season. How many of these matches did Madrid win, one or two?

Answer: One

Real Madrid's first match against Barcelona in the 2003-2004 season was played on December 6, 2003 at Camp Nou. Real Madrid won by a score of 2-1 with goals by Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, with Patrick Kluivert scoring Barcelona's only goal. On April 25, 2004, Barcelona returned the favor by winning 2-1 in Real Madrid's home stadium. Santiago Solari gave the home team the lead, but goals by Kluivert and Xavi won the match for Barcelona. Barcelona finished up with two more points than Real Madrid at the end of the season.
9. How far did Real Madrid make it in the 2003-04 Champions League, before being eliminated by Monaco?

Answer: Quarter-finals

Real Madrid's 2003-04 Champions League started off pretty well, with the "white" club advancing to the knockout stage on top of Group F. Real Madrid went on to defeat Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 thanks to a goal by Zidane. They then faced Monaco in the quarter-finals. Madrid decisively won the first leg by a score of 4-2.

However, Monaco managed to knock out Real Madrid by winning 3-1, which resulted in a 5-5 overall tie but meant Monaco would qualify for the next stage because it scored more away goals.
10. Did Real Madrid win the Spanish league title at the end of the 2003-04 season?

Answer: No

Real Madrid had a fantastic start in the 2003-04 season but, for some reason, fell apart towards the end. In fact, Real Madrid lost 7 out of the last 10 games they played in La Liga, which was quite dramatic since the team had only lost 3 games in the first 28 matchdays. Real Madrid finished in the fourth spot with 70 points, behind Barcelona (2nd) and Deportivo La Coruna (3rd), but still qualified for the Champions League. That season's champion was Valencia.
