1. Isabell Werth
Isabell Werth, born in Isuum in 1969, is the most decorated equestrian in Olympic history. 3. Darja Varfolomeev
Born in Barnaul, Russia in 2006, Darja Varfolomeev moved to Germany as a child and began her career in rhythmic gymnastics. Her achievements include winning the all-around gold medal at the 2023 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, where she also won several apparatus titles.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Varfolomeev won the gold medal in the individual all-around final with a score of 142.850, becoming the first German rhythmic gymnast to win an Olympic title. Her performance included a ball routine with 36.500, the highest score of the event. She finished ahead of Bulgaria's Boryana Kaleyn (silver, 140.600) and Italy's Sofia Raffaeli (bronze, 136.300).
4. Miriam Butkereit
Born in 1994 in Hamburg, Miriam Butkereit is one of Germany's leading judoka, specialising in the 70kg weight category. Highlights include multiple medals at European competitions and many performances at international tournaments such as the World Judo Tour events.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Miriam competed in the women's -70kg judo event and won a silver medal. She was beaten in the final by Barbara Matiæ of Croatia. The bronze medals in this category went to Michaela Polleres of Austria and Gabriella Willems of Belgium.
5. Lukas Märtens
Lukas Märtens, born in 2001 in Magdeburg, has won medals at international competitions, including the 2022, 2023 and 2024 World Aquatics Championships. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Märtens won Germany's first gold medal of the Games, in the men's 400 metres freestyle.
He swam the race in 3:41.78 to beat Australia's Elijah Winnington, who took silver, and South Korea's Kim Woo-min, who took bronze. The historic victory made him the first German male swimmer to win Olympic gold in the event since Uwe Dassler in 1988, and was Germany's first swimming gold since 2008.
6. Esther Henseleit
Esther Henseleit, born in Varel in 1999 turned pro in 2019 and she claimed two victories on the Ladies European Tour (LET) in her first year. Although she had not won an LPGA Tour title prior to Paris 2024, she had several top-10 finishes in 2024. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Henseleit started the final round in a tie for 20th place, seven shots off the lead.
In an extraordinary display, she shot a closing 66 (-6) to climb the leaderboard and claim the silver medal. Her round included seven birdies, with a dramatic finish of back-to-back birdies.
She was the first European woman in modern Olympic history to win a medal in golf. Gold went to New Zealand's Lydia Ko and bronze to China's Xiyu Lin.
7. Lea Sophie Friedrich
Born in Dassow, Germany in 2000, Lea Sophie Friedrich is a sprint specialist who made her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 (she won a silver medal in the team sprint). At the World Championships, she has won multiple gold medals in the keirin, sprint and team sprint.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Friedrich had two stellar performances. She teamed up with Pauline Grabosch and Emma Hinze to take bronze in the women's team sprint behind Great Britain and New Zealand. And she took silver in the 500m time trial, losing to New Zealand's Ellesse Andrews in the final.
8. Nelvie Tiafack
Nelvie Tiafack, born in 1999 in Buea, Cameroon, represents Germany in the super heavyweight category (+92kg). After moving to Germany as a child, he took up boxing. His career highlights prior to Paris included a gold medal at the U-22 European Championships in 2021 and a gold medal at the European Boxing Championships in 2022.
At Paris 2024, Tiafack faced Uzbekistan's Bakhodir Jalolov, the defending Olympic champion. Tiafack lost the bout but secured a bronze medal, his first Olympic podium finish.
9. Elena Lilik
Born in 1998 in Weimar, Elena Lilik started paddling at the age of six and trains in her hometown, which is famous for its rich tradition in the sport. Competing under her maiden name, Elena Apel, until 2021. Her early successes included a bronze medal at her first senior European Championships in Prague in 2018, and she then amassed an impressive haul of world championship medals, including two golds.
At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Lilik put in an outstanding performance in the women's C1 slalom final to claim silver behind Australia's Jessica Fox.
She finished the final in a time of 103.54 without a penalty. The bronze medal went to Evy Leibfarth of the United States.
10. Malaika Mihambo
Malaika Mihambo, born in 1994 in Heidelberg, a long jump athlete -- her career includes winning the gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and being crowned World Champion twice, in 2019 and 2022. She has also won four European Championship medals, two of them gold.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Mihambo was looking to defend her Olympic title, but secured silver. Her best jump was 6.98 metres in the fifth round. She finished behind Tara Davis-Woodhall (USA), who took gold with a leap of 7.10 metres, and Jasmine Moore (USA), who took bronze with a leap of 6.96 metres.
