'There's a New Girl in Town', the theme song for seasons 1 and 2 of the sitcom, 'Alice' was written specifically for the show with the music by David Shire and the lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. It was sung by the star, Linda Lavin. The music stayed the same for the run of the show; however, the lyrics changed across the seasons to reflect the development of the character and her increasing confidence.
The lyrics highlight Alice's transition from a restricted, dependent life, 'And in between I cooked and cleaned and went out of my head.' to one of freedom and hope, 'There's a new girl in town, with a brand new style.' The song is an upbeat, hopeful tune that sets up the sitcom with a glimpse into Alice's former life and provides a hopeful, optimistic outlook on Alice's situation.
