ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. ZIP Codes were introduced in 1963 to speed mail sorting and delivery. The original ZIP Codes were all five-digit numbers. These were later expanded by the addition of four more digits (#####-####) to further narrowly define the point of delivery.

The first digit of a ZIP Code represents a group of states. The first three digits define the "sectional center" through which mail will be sorted. The last two digits generally define a post office and the additional four digits generally specify a specific route.
