The Captain of the Delta Platoon, Mikhail sacrifices himself to stop Nemesis and protect Jill at a moment when Nicholai turns tail and shows his true colours. A seasoned veteran in sticky situations, he proves to be a born leader in a moment of crisis. His sacrifice is a big help in the moment if only because it allows Jill to escape the subway. That said, she doesn't have to go too far before Nemesis reemerges on her way to the Clock Tower.

Though the G-Virus appears to run rampant in "Resident Evil 2" (especially when considering the evolution of William Birkin), the T-Virus is the cause of the outbreak in Raccoon City proper in "Resident Evil 3", occurring before and after Claire and Leon's story. Zombies created in "Resident Evil 3" are hearty and are often able to take a number of hits from any gun before falling. It's still occasionally possible to get a headshot and one-hit-KO one of these animated corpses, but it's quite rare. Sometimes it makes the most sense to run by and conserve ammunition, but you won't always have that luxury.

Your very first destination (upon escaping Jill Valentine's Downtown apartment) will be the Uptown streets, and this means navigating waves of zombies as they emerge from the rubble of Raccoon City. Though there will be many locations you can explore (some which need tools to access), your aim will be to get into an alleyway to gain access to a Repair Shop. The catch is that this way is blocked by a raging fire, and the only way to put it out is a Fire Hose that you can attach to a nearby hydrant. The hose is in the Kite Bros Railway Building. Once you use it, you won't need it again-- you have bigger fires to put out.

While Raccoon City descends into chaos, Jill Valentine awakens in her downtown apartment. The outbreak has already begun, but the hordes of undead are second on the list of worries since Umbrella's Project Nemesis has set out to kill the remaining members of S.T.A.R.S. She'll scramble to escape her building and Brad Vickers, the only other S.T.A.R.S. member left in Raccoon City, will sacrifice himself to save her as she races onward to the roof of a nearby parking building. It won't be an escape, however-- the unstoppable Nemesis will destroy her escape route and she'll only be saved when Carlos, a member of the UBCS (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service) takes her to safety in the subway.

In the scope of this game, Nemesis has more or less been 'programmed' to specifically track down operatives under this organization, such as Jill Valentine. The big, hulking brute is not capable of typical word-of-mouth communication, but despite this, he still bellows out "S.T.A.R.S.!" frequently, as the only word he is capable of using.

Jill, having faced off against these certain horrors at the Spencer Mansion (in "Resident Evil") has shown off her lockpicking abilities before. That's why, when she finds the Lockpick on the body outside the Subway Power Substation, she'll be the one to make the most use out of it. It'll open any yellow locks in the game, many of which seal silver cases containing weapon upgrades, strong ammo, and the like.

Appearing in most main-series games, Cerberus are quick, dangerous, zombified dogs and they will waste no time in taking a flying leap across a room to get at your flesh. Despite their speed, these foes aren't all too strong and will often be felled by a shotgun blast to the head, which isn't particularly difficult if your reflexes are quick. These creatures often hunt in packs, so if you find yourself surrounded you'll probably have a hard time overcoming them. They appear early in this game as well, so you'll need to be on your guard.

When Jill arrives in the office of this late-stage area, she'll find out that the elevator in the Underground Warehouse often blows its fuses, and it shouldn't take long for this foreshadowing to become a reality as her time here will be spent collecting three labelled fuses from the room's sub-generators to clear her path. This area is fraught with enemies found from almost all areas of the game (and a new one!) so she'll have to use all weapons at her disposal to get what she needs and and return to where she saw Nicholai waiting for her.

Jill needs to get the subway running again, but doing this is more complicated than she would hope since she needs to put out fires (literally and figuratively) while she searches around the buildings in the region fighting off both Zombies and Zombie Dogs. She'll find a Fire House in the Kite Bros. Railway Building and head onward to the Power Substation to flip circuit breakers (and destroy the spider-like creatures there), but then she'll need to dodge Nemesis en route back to the Railway Building, set a train route, and then head back to the subway proper to reunite with U.B.C.S. She will...to an extent. Nemesis will catch up and force her to take an alternate route into the sewers; she can meet up with Carlos later.

Nightmare difficulty, in which everything is not only tougher to kill, but you get less to kill with, isn't even the hardest difficulty to appear in the game; if you beat Nightmare, you can play the game in Inferno difficulty. In Nightmare, you might also notice that items found throughout Raccoon City are in different places than they were in the normal difficulties. In Inferno, the auto-save feature is turned off completely.

It becomes apparent when you stumble into the Sewers that your Lockpick isn't a solution to every problem, especially since this under-street part of the map seems to have higher security that you'd think (maybe it has something to do with the awful creatures being spawned there). You need to get your hands on a Battery Pack, and it's big. This two-slot item has to be left in the lock for you to have continual access through certain passages. There are three of these doors, two of which are absolute necessities to get through, but you'll have to get crafty and solve the door puzzles to make the tough situation work in your favour. Once you're out of the area, the item can be discarded.

You'll get the opportunity, in this game, to visit the Raccoon City Police Department-- one of the main locations featured in "Resident Evil 2", and because of that you'll encounter a handful of items, locations, and foes as Carlos which may seem familiar if you've played through that game. Some of these items you need to find include the Battery and Electronic Gadget, both of which combine to create the Detonator that you use to blow up the wall in the Shower Room. By the time Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield visit the building later in the night, that wall is already broken open.

Players of "Resident Evil 2" will catch some obvious easter eggs along the way, but everyone else might be surprised to face off against their first Lickers on the hunt for the S.T.A.R.S. Office. Brad, who was bitten at the start of the game, appears near the front door. His keycard will be integral to navigating the building.

Some Zombies found in this game go a step further and Jill/Carlos will find that they have a helmet-like parasite protecting them from harm. This is a Nemesis-specific thing as his parasitic abilities will allow him to infect people with stronger protective capabilities. To beat these zombies, you need to shoot their bodies until the head-laden parasite reveals a singular red weak spot. Once you shoot that weak spot enough, the zombie will fall.

Even though Jill will escape Nemesis-- only for a bit-- she'll still need to make her way back through the Downtown area and reunite with Carlos at the subway. This will require that she pass by some classic locations in the Raccoon City streets including the RPD Building and Kendo's (to grab some ammo and weapons upgrades). Nemesis, having survived the earlier encounter, outfits himself with a rocket launcher and pursues Jill further, at least until she reunites with Carlos and they descend into the subway at the last minute. It's a dangerous decision. After Carlos sends Jill with Mikhail and Nicholai, Nemesis derails the train, killing Mikhail on the way through. The train is detonated while Nicholai escapes; Jill is knocked out-- but she's temporarily safe.

The first time takes place atop a construction site. Here, Nemesis is armed with a flamethrower. The way to beat him is fittingly simple for a first encounter: the player must disable the mechanism tied to the flamethrower, then simply lay into Nemesis with anything they have to hand. The second fight takes place as Jill is crossing a bridge. She watches Nemesis, caught ablaze, stumble and fall into a river. After quietly mocking him, she reaches out to Carlos to inform him of their transport going awry, when Nemesis suddenly lunges up at her from the river he fell into, quadrupedal and stronger than he was prior. They then begin to actually fight in front of a clock tower. The main challenge here is dodging Nemesis' aggressive swinging and lunging attacks, while retaliating with whatever the player has to hand when successfully doing so. The third fight takes place in a disposal center. Here, Nemesis is even faster and sturdier than he was during the second confrontation. There is less room to maneuver, which helps the player by making Nemesis easier to track, but also hinders them by giving them less room to elude him. The challenge here is similar to the second encounter, only differing in that the player must first stun Nemesis with explosives before being able to damage him. The fourth fight takes place in a different room within the same building as the third fight. This is also the instance in which Jill finally eliminates Nemesis with a really powerful weapon. Marvel!

If you've entered the RPD Building later in the night (as Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield in "Resident Evil 2" then you'll know that the Shower Room is likely to be in a bit of a state, but what you might not know until now is that it's Carlos' fault. In an effort to reach the S.T.A.R.S. Office on the third floor of the west wing, he'll have to combine an Electronic Gadget with a Battery, stick it to some C4, and blast through the showers to gain passage. Interestingly, Leon/Claire need to do the same thing, but in a storage space (also on the top floor) to get a hidden emblem during their visit.

If you're the type who enjoys obscure collectibles and general completionism, you're going to love finding Mr. Charlie in the game since he appears in nearly every open section, hidden away into the nooks and crannies of Raccoon City waiting to be destroyed. There are twenty of these little bobbleheads found throughout the game, and all of them make a distinctive quiet buzzing noise that you may or may not have a hard time keeping an ear out for, especially in the thick of things. Destroying all twenty (by any means) will award you an achievement, but little else; he doesn't unlock an upgrade or a weapon.
