Roulette Trivia Questions

1. Does a French roulette wheel have more or fewer numbered spaces on it than an American roulette wheel does?

From Quiz
If At First You Don't Succeed... Give Up!

Answer: Fewer

A French roulette wheel only has 37 spaces on it while an American wheel has 38. The French roulette wheel does not have the 00 space on it while the American one does. This can be slightly confusing because the 00 was called the French double zero when it was introduced to America.

2. The original design of the American roulette wheel had another pocket with what symbol in it? If the ball landed in this pocket, the house won.

From Quiz If At First You Don't Succeed... Give Up!

Answer: Bald eagle

It was called the liberty pocket and if the ball stopped in it, every player lost and the house took all the money. It was not possible to bid on the liberty pocket. It was a short-lived feature on the wheel as it was, understandably, not popular.

3. Where would I place my chip if I wanted to bet the snake?

From Quiz If At First You Don't Succeed... Give Up!

Answer: Corner of the 34 square

Betting the snake refers to the zigzag pattern of 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. It pays 2:1 odds like any normal column would. Betting the snake is not allowed on all roulette tables. It is traditional to place your chip on the corner of the 34 box to indicate you want to bet the snake. In some casinos, the table might have a special box to bet the snake or a table might actually have a snake design through those numbers, in which case you should place the chip on the snake's head.

4. Roulette is sometimes called "The Devil's Game", but do you know why?

From Quiz Ready for Roulette?

Answer: The numbers on the wheel add up to 666.

It's true! The numbers on a roulette wheel go from 1 to 36. Get out a calculator, and do the math. Add up 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, etc, all the way to 36, and the total is 666, the sign of the beast!

5. Which French scientist created a crude version of the roulette wheel while he was trying to discover a perpetual motion machine?

From Quiz If At First You Don't Succeed... Give Up!

Answer: Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal dedicated his life to mathematics and physics. He was also a noted philosopher. Pascal tried to develop a perpetual motion device - a machine that would never stop moving and could operate with an energy source. One of his creations during his experimentations was the roulette wheel, though he did not associate it with gambling.

6. If I bet "manque", which number could the ball land in to give me a win?

From Quiz If At First You Don't Succeed... Give Up!

Answer: 3

"Manque" is the French word for low, meaning I bet on the lowest half of the numbers (1-18). "Passe" is the opposite, meaning a bet on the highest half of numbers (19-36). Betting either pays 2:1.

7. What does a straight up (a bet that only covers one number) bet pay?

From Quiz Ready for Roulette?

Answer: 35 to 1

A straight up bet pays 35 to 1, so a $1 bet would net you $35, a $2 bet would net you $70, and so on.

8. At the Monte Carlo Casino on August 18, 1913, which color came up 26 times in a row?

From Quiz If At First You Don't Succeed... Give Up!

Answer: Black

This infamous incident caused people to lose their life savings because gamblers incorrectly believed red was due to come up. They believed because black had been called so many times in a row, it increased the likelihood of red coming up. In reality, there is an equal chance (slightly less than 50-50) that either black or red would come up no matter what the previous spins were. This incorrect reasoning is called the gambler's fallacy or the Monte Carlo fallacy.

9. What is the little plastic or glass marker that the croupier uses to mark the winning number on the table after the wheel stops spinning?

From Quiz If At First You Don't Succeed... Give Up!

Answer: Dolly

When the croupier places the dolly over the called number (or on a chip on that number), that signifies that everyone should keep their hands away from the table. Some casinos have very strict rules about this. There have been instances of people trying to move their chips to turn their losing bet into a winning one after the wheel stopped. There have also been instances of people trying to take another gambler's chips for themselves. It is proper casino etiquette to remove your hands from the table until after all bets have been paid out and the table has been cleared.

10. What does a bet on 4 numbers pay?

From Quiz Ready for Roulette?

Answer: 8 to 1

A 4 number bet pays 8 to 1, and is called a corner bet. You place the chip in the center of the disecting lines of the four numbers you wish to bet.

11. What does a two number bet pay?

From Quiz Ready for Roulette?

Answer: 17 to 1

A two number bet is called "a split." This is placed on the dividing line between two numbers which are either beside each other or on top and bottom of each other.

12. What does a six number bet pay?

From Quiz Ready for Roulette?
