Lizards in Entertainment Trivia Questions

1. Perhaps the most well-known daikaiju (and also the first) is this lizard who rises out of the sea to terrorize the city. In the Japanese version, it terrorizes Tokyo, but in the American version, it terrorizes New York. Which giant lizard is this?

From Quiz
Lounging Lizards

Answer: Godzilla

Godzilla first appeared in the 1954 Japanese kaiju (giant monster) movie "Godzilla". Anguirus was the first enemy Godzilla ever fought and first appeared in 1955 in "Godzilla Raids Again". However, he and Godzilla became allies later on. Rodan first appeared in 1956, and is yet another ally of Godzilla's. King Ghidora, also known as Monster Zero, earned a nickname "King of Terror", as it was one of the most powerful kaiju to appear in Japanese arts. King Ghidora is Godzilla's arch nemesis in many "Godzilla" movies.

2. Culture Club discussed a specific chameleon in a 1983 hit song by what name?

From Quiz It's a Lizard Quizzard

Answer: Karma Chameleon

A song about a red, gold, and green chameleon (not typically a thing), "Karma Chameleon" was the exact type of nonsense song you'd expect to hear in the early 1980s, but all the more interesting was that it followed the more downtrodden single "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me", which escalated Culture Club's status to hit '80s band only a short time prior. According to lead singer Boy George, the song was about fears of social alienation which, sure, it works, but you have to wonder how the chameleon comes and goes. That's not really how they work. You might assume I don't like this song.

3. Perhaps some of the most famous tyrant lizards come from the "Jurassic Park" trilogy. Which "Jurassic Park" featured a ringtone which, whenever it was heard, indicated that the deadly lizard was near?

From Quiz Lounging Lizards

Answer: Jurassic Park III

"Jurassic Park III" was released in 2001. In this film, the Tyrannosaurus rex is finally defeated by a Spinosaurus, who first attacks the group of people in the plane. The Spinosaurus kills the Tyrannosaurus by snapping its neck. The Spinosaurus also ate a cellphone, so whenever a specific ringtone played, you knew the killer lizard was close, and about ready to attack.

4. As the story goes, the Geico gecko had to go to court when a complaint was filed against him for this behavior. (Hint: if you do it, it's against the law). What behavior was it?

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: Wearing no pants in public.

Geico gecko's work biography says that a lawsuit complained about gecko's lack of pants. Happily gecko was vindicated. His lawyer argued successfully that as geckos do not wear pants as matter of course, they should not be expected to do so.

5. Which automobile manufacturing company, founded in 1985, uses a gecko as its brand logo? It can be seen on the hubcaps.

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: Wiesmann

Wiesmann, located in Germany, is the answer. Cars "stick to the road like geckos to the wall" is their motto. The sticky toe pads on the feet are a source of wonder and inspiration for a growing number of companies. Geckos who have these sticky pads (not all of them do) can walk across a ceiling without problem.

6. A lizard simply named 'Liz' appeared in what children's TV show as the sidekick of Ms. Frizzle?

From Quiz It's a Lizard Quizzard

Answer: The Magic School Bus

Appearing alongside Ms. Frizzle in every episode of "The Magic School Bus", Liz is a chameleon who, oddly, never really changes her colours despite that being a fitting idea in many different episodes of the educational program. Additionally, Liz never talks during the show, though she's seen to be exceptionally intelligent and self-aware. Viewers probably wouldn't be surprised to know that she had a full name: Elizabeth Savannah Frizzle.

7. This video game gecko loves TV, and thus makes an easy target for Rez, who wants to control the world of television. This video game character has also been the mascot of Crystal Dynamics. What is this lounging lizard's name?

From Quiz Lounging Lizards

Answer: Gex

Gex is a green gecko created by Crystal Dynamics, and his main enemy is Rez, who tries to destroy the "Media Dimension". Gex, who loves TV, must stop him, before the world of television is ruined. "Gex" was released for the PlayStation (and others) in 1994, with "Gex 2" released in 1998 and "Gex 3" in 1999.

8. Many geckos can't work in sales and so cannot rise up the ranks, because they are awake only at night. But the Geico gecko is of the genus Phelsuma, which means he is this kind.

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: A diurnal gecko

Family Gekkonidae, genus Phelsuma, diurnal geckos are able to work as business icons, as well as keep up intensive schedules shooting commercials, because they are wide awake during the day. It is true they occasionally may be found asleep among bananas.

9. Often spouting comedic lines about pop culture, what video game lizard starred in a series of platformer video games in the 1990s?

From Quiz It's a Lizard Quizzard

Answer: Gex

Gex the Gecko starred in "Gex", "Gex: Enter the Gecko", and "Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko", all of which followed the titular lizard's adventures through unique worlds and stylized movie environments to battle Emperor Rez. It would likely come as no surprised to players that Gex was voiced by an actual stand-up comedian-- Dana Gould-- whose one-liners and zingers would make up the repetitive bulk of dialogue spread throughout the games, almost always making fun of movies and TV shows, arguably going over the heads of the games' main demographic at the time.

10. "Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance". This slogan was used by this company, who uses cavemen, money with googly eyes, and a green lizard as mascots. Do you know the company?

From Quiz Lounging Lizards

Answer: GEICO

GEICO stands for "Government Employees Insurance Company". It was founded in 1936 by Leo Goodwin in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. One of GEICO's many mascots is a gecko, known as the GEICO gecko. He first appeared in 1999 due to the Screen Actor's Guild strike, which meant GEICO was unable to use human actors. Therefore, a new animated star was born.

11. Many diurnal geckos originate from Madagascar, but we can tell as he speaks that the Geico gecko, actually, is not from Australia, New Zealand or Madagascar. What kind of accent does he have?

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: London Cockney

A good many Australians have been hired in television, movies, theater and advertisement to portray a British character. Most audiences cannot tell British from Australian accent. The Geico company makes light of this confusion in a commercial. Gecko's colleagues debate where he's from. The Geico gecko is certainly not from Madagascar, where so many geckos originate. If so he'd speak Malagasy, a Malayo-Polynesian language with many Bantu (African) words.

12. A huge lizard-like creature is the crocodile. One man on television known as the "Crocodile Hunter" wrestled down many crocodiles on his show, and kept them in his Crocodile Zoo in Australia. Who was this man?

From Quiz Lounging Lizards

Answer: Steve Irwin

Steve Irwin was born in 1962 in Victoria, Australia. He was most noted for his television show "The Crocodile Hunter", which ran from 1997 to 2004 (in the USA), which earned him the nickname "Crocodile Hunter". He died in 2006 when a stingray stabbed him in the chest. All film with the scene was destroyed.

13. How did the Geico gecko first get connected with the Geico Insurance company?

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: People called gecko's house asking for Geico.

Gecko had a rough life for a while, including constant wrong number calls to his house. People constantly mispronounced gecko as Geico. Finally gecko went straight to the Geico company about it. Geico was taken with the little green and orange fella who has no eyelids and wears no pants. They hired him on the spot.

14. Killer Croc would be found in the sewers of what comic book locale?

From Quiz It's a Lizard Quizzard

Answer: Gotham City

Killer Croc is typically a Batman villain. First seen in 1983 in "Detective Comics", Killer Croc is actually a man with a rare genetic condition that makes him look like a crocodile. Over time, his appearance seems to have influenced his attitude and habits-- he seems to be cannibalistic in later appearances. Killer Croc was one of many bad guys featured in the "Batman: Arkham City" video game and, later, the "Suicide Squad" film released in 2016 (where he was portrayed by "LOST" actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

15. "Karma Chameleon" was a song that, in 1984, spent three weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It was off of the 1983 album "Colour by Numbers". Who sings this lizardy song?

From Quiz Lounging Lizards

Answer: Culture Club

"Karma Chameleon" was Culture Club's only number one song in the US. It reached the number one spot in 15 other countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Culture Club was a British New Wave rock band formed in 1981, and broke up in 1986, but had a "reunion period" from 1998 to 2002 in the UK. Jethro Tull has a song called "Salamander", Radiohead has a song called "Karma Police", and Elton John has a song called "Chameleon".

16. The Geico gecko may be seen munching on chips, but in the wild geckos eat insects, pollen, and sweet, soft fruits. So it's fitting that this beverage's company has a dancing gecko mascot. Which company is it?

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: SoBe

SoBe has a double-gecko logo, as well as a gecko dancing troupe to entertain us in commercials. Unlike the Geico company gecko, who is soft skinned, sweet and big-eyed affable, the SoBe gecko's are ignited, energized and in-your-face.

17. This American rapper, originally a member of The Color Changin' Click, won a Grammy with his song "Ridin'", from his 2005 album "The Sound of Revenge". Do you know who this rapper is?

18. A video game portrays this smart-aleck gecko who jumps, shoots and blocks attack with his shield, in order to achieve his goal--eliminate humans who built the Great Tower. What is the name of the gecko?

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: Rex

"Rex" was highly acclaimed. Another video game using the gecko image is "Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko". Here, the wily secret agent gecko saves a damsel in distress, battles enemies and goes on adventures.

19. Lizard-like in nature, what race from Germanic folklore is available to play or fight in "Dungeons and Dragons" and "Pathfinder" role-playing games?

From Quiz It's a Lizard Quizzard

Answer: Kobold

Kobolds are impish, little guys typically believed to have dragon ancestry, though this just means that they tend to be lizard-like in certain regards. While typically seen as an enemy race known for getting in low-level trouble in role-playing games (kind of like goblins with sharper points), they have a much more interesting origin in Germanic folklore. Kobolds of lore depict them as fiendish spirits which are, more often than not, invisible and inhabiting peoples' homes.

20. What did the Geico gecko do in 1999?

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: Made his TV debut.

The Geico gecko was voted America's favorite icon in 2005, five years after his television screen debut in 1999-2000.

21. The Visitors of another planet turned out to be reptilian in nature in what short-lived sci-fi TV show first airing in 1984 and 1985 and being rebooted in 2009?

From Quiz It's a Lizard Quizzard

Answer: V

In "V", a series of giant spaceships operated by a charismatic group of interstellar beings arrived on Earth and started influencing in their ways until a small group of resistance people discovered that they were, in fact, reptilian beasts bent on taking over the planet. While not featuring actual lizards, it's not hard to see that the Visitors take on the species' more terrifying qualities, especially when their true forms are revealed. In both cases, the "V" TV show never really lasted too long due to poor viewership.

22. In this commercial, fashion model Naomi Campbell dances with SoBe geckos to the tune of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". They aired during which February 2008 entertainment event?

From Quiz The Gecko: logo, icon, secret agent

Answer: Super Bowl

SoBe advertised "Life Water" as Naomi and rows of gecko dancers moved their groove during the Super Bowl. One gecko dancer ate a fellow dancer, a grasshopper. SoBe's gecko's are decidedly reptilian. Shortly after this commercial aired, Campbell was banned from British Airways and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, charges she had faced several times in other circumstances. She remained a popular super model, but how this negative publicity affected the SoBe geckos is the question.
