Answer: Blackjack Mulligan destroyed one of Ric Flair's robes

In April 1978, Ric Flair had recaptured the United States Heavyweight Championship from "Mr. Wrestling I" Tim Woods. Blackjack Mulligan congratulated Flair on the victory during a television interview. Flair insulted Mulligan during the interview causing a fight between the two wrestlers. Mulligan wrestled a match during the television taping that night. During the match, Flair came to ringside and destroyed a prized cowboy hat belonging to Mulligan much to the dismay of Mulligan. Later that night, Mulligan interrupted Flair's match by coming to the ringside area and destroying one of Flair's expensive ring robes. These actions led to a several month feud between Mulligan and Flair.

Johnny Valentine won the title on July 3, 1975 from Harley Race. Johnny was the first man to actually win the title in a wrestling match. Harley was awarded the title in a "apocrypha" tournament. He held the title until October of that year when he was involved in a plane crash that ended his in-ring career. Greg won the title 5 years later from Ric Flair on July 26, 1980. Greg held the title for four short months before he lost it back to Ric Flair in Greenville, South Carolina. Johnny held many titles including the NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship before he died in 2000. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine also had a great deal of success including reigns as the WWF Intercontinental and World Tag Team Championship with Brutus Beefcake.

The title was first introduced in 1974 in Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. It was first called the Mid-Atlantic Television title before being renamed by Jim Crockett Promotions. The first title holder was Danny Miller. He defeated Ole Anderson in the tournament final for the belt. He first won the title on February 27, 1974 before losing it to Ivan Koloff. Danny only held the title one time. Ivan Koloff held the title on five different occasions.

"The Fabulous Freebirds" were the first team to hold the title. They defeated Stan Frazier and Robert Fuller in the tournament final. "The Fabulous Freebirds" were a three man team. The team consisted of Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts. They defended the titles for almost two months before losing them to Ted DiBiase and Stan Frazier. When the title was first introduced "The Fabulous Freebirds" were the reigning Georgia Tag Team Champions. A trophy was used as the National Tag Team Titles until 1981.

Abdullah was brought in by Piper to help him in his quest to regain the title. Wahoo would return several months later and defeat Sgt. Slaughter. The two exchanged the title during their feud until August 22, 1982 when Wahoo defeated Sgt. Slaughter in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Greg first defeated Mr. Wrestling for the title in 1976. He would hold the title three more times between 1976 and 1981. Greg was the son of legendary wrestler Johnny Valentine. Greg was a major draw in the NWA and WWF. He held the WWF Intercontinental Title as well as the tag team title with Brutus Beefcake. Greg was also a three time United States Champion. He was much like Ric Flair as he would wear fancy robes to the ring. He also used the Figure Four Leg lock as his finishing maneuver.

In 1984, they won the National Tag Team Championship. They defeated the team of Jacques Rougeau and Brad Armstrong for the vacated title. The team defended the title for almost two months before losing to Ole Anderson and Thunderbolt Patterson. "The Long Riders" were one of my favorite teams to watch. They were a couple of no nonsense kind of guys. When they were in the squared circle you knew there was going to be a great match between them and their opponents. "The Long Riders" also held the NWA American Tag Team Championship four times.
