Common Bond 15 Questions Trivia Questions

1. What is the link between a breed of pigeons used for racing, a well-hit baseball, and a Greek poet?

From Quiz
An Animated Common Bond

Answer: Homer

Racing pigeons are released at some specified point, and timed to see how long they take to get back home. Because they are not all heading to the same spot, the winner is decided based on the time taken and the distance travelled, to calculate the fastest average velocity of each bird. A special breed called the Racing Homer is used. The sport of pigeon racing really took off in the 19th century, in Belgium. One of the earlier breeds used to develop Racing Homers was the English Carrier. In baseball, a batter who hits the ball so that it leaves the field of play without first touching the ground is said to have hit a home run, or a homer. Should this happen when there are three runners already on base and ready to score, it is called a grand slam, or just a slam. The author of the two foundational Greek epic poems 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey' is not actually known. They have been attributed to a poet named Homer (along with a number of other works that are now considered the work of others), but scholars disagree as to whether they were the work of one man, or of two different individuals, or were produced over centuries of oral tradition that simply got written down in the 8th century BCE. Nevertheless, "everyone knows" that Homer wrote them!

4. In March 2011, which professional sports team, based in Texas, did baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan become the principle owner and CEO?

From Quiz MaceoMack's First Common Bonds

Answer: Texas Rangers

Nolan Ryan was hired by the Texas Ranger baseball organization in February of 2008, as the organization's president. In March 2011, Ryan was named CEO and principle owner of the Rangers. Ryan was named the 2012 CEO of the Year by the Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business. During his 25-year career (1966-1993) he was a top Major League Baseball pitcher, playing for four teams. Ryan recorded an unprecedented seven no-hit games and struck out a total of 5,714 opposing batters during his career. Ryan had his jersey number retired by three of the four teams he played for - the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (jersey # 30), the Houston Astros (jersey #34), and the Texas Rangers (jersey #34), the team he played his final five seasons with. Key word: Rangers

6. From what deformity was it once commonly believed that Richard III of England suffered?

From Quiz Common Bond Classic #1 - Monsters' Studio

Answer: hunchback

Richard III was described in Shakespeare's play as having a hunchback and a withered arm. The bard may have exaggerated Richard's deformities for dramatic effect and to illustrate his inner crookedness. The discovery of the bones of Richard III in an English parking lot showed archaeologists that the last Plantagenet king suffered from scoliosis, which causes curvature of the spine, but not from kyphosis, which produces the distinct hunchback. Historians before Shakespeare described King Richard a little more accurately: Thomas More called him "crook-backed" rather than hunchbacked and Vergil noted he had one shoulder higher than another.

7. Former "Heartbreaker" and "Travelling Wilbury" Tom Petty appears in which of Kevin Costner's films?

From Quiz Common Bond - Revenge of the Llamas Style

Answer: The Postman

Tom Petty knew that he wanted to be in a band from the moment that he saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. He is never given a name in the film but the following piece of conversation is presumably intended to be ironic: Postman: I know you. You're... famous. Tom Petty: I was. One other piece of irony lies in the name that the postman gives for the current president - Richard Starkey, the real name of Ringo Starr.

20. For what Indiana college football team did coach Knute Rockne give his famous "Win one for the Gipper" speech?

23. When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon, he claimed, "The ______ is cast."

From Quiz Wow! Yet Another Common Bond

Answer: Die

To cross the Rubicon with an army was prohibited by law. This action was to declare war on Rome. The Senate sent Pompey to battle Caesar, but Caesar won and the rest is history. In this context the word 'die' does not refer to dice - the object or the game. A die is a mold used to create an object such as a statue. After a die is cast (that is, filled with the substance the object will be made of) it is broken in order to release the newly cast object. What Caesar was saying here was that the deed had been done and the old ways were no longer valid because things had changed.
