2. Articles of clothing to keep your hearing gear warm

From Quiz You Won't Believe Your Ears

Answer: Earmuffs & earflaps

Surely the most comical pieces of apparel ever, but they keep your ears warm in winter, so don't get smart about it! (And don't joke about it in the town of Farmington, Maine.) We owe the invention of ear muffs to one Chester Greenwood. In 1873, young Chester (he was aged 15) complained that his ears were cold while he was ice skating. He persuaded his grandmother to sew tufts of fur between loops of wire. He patented the idea in 1877 and earmuffs were manufactured in Farmington for many years. On the first Saturday of December each year, the people of Farmington celebrate "Chester Greenwood Day". This includes a parade in Chester's honour. All taking part must wear earmuffs (naturally).

Half-human, half-Vulcan, Mr Spock's adventures and experiences on board the starship Enterprise are legendary. Utterly logical and seemingly non-emotional, Spock remains one of the best-loved science fiction characters of all time. 'Star Trek' also boasts one of the best-known split infinitives in 'to boldly go where no man has gone before', a phrase which has been the subject of much light-hearted parody over the years. From Quiz My Ears Are Alright

Answer: Stretched

Having ears gauged is a method, after initial ear-piercing, to stretch the ear lobes bigger and bigger. A person can wear larger, heavier and thicker ear jewelry once they have had their ears stretched to the size they want. Ear gauging is also expressed as flesh tunnels. Some cultures, where ear gauging and stretching has been used, include Masai tribes in Kenya as well as the Huaorani tribe of the Amazon Basin. Some reasons for stretching the ear lobes include: to ward off evil spirits, coming of age celebrations and beauty reasons. Once the stretch has taken place larger plugs are inserted and more stretching occurs. The process is repeated until the desired size of the stretch is achieved.

From Quiz Can You Hear Me?

Answer: any good of themselves

Eavesdroppers may well hear or not hear any of the above, but the actual saying is 'eavesdroppers never hear any good of themselves'. This was an old saying aimed at discouraging children from listening to others' conversations, originating from people listening under the eaves of houses in the space known as the 'eavesdrip' or 'eavesdrop'. Nowadays a common theme in many novels and soap operas is the mayhem and unhappiness that can result when characters eavesdrop on one another; indeed, on one British soap in particular an episode can scarcely pass without a character listening in, either on purpose or accidentally!

23. The Gate of the Ears was an early city gate in Granada, in which country?

From Quiz I'm All Ears

Answer: Spain

The records are not clear, but it is believed that the gate was built during either the eleventh or twelfth centuries. It did not provide any defensive qualities and, legends indicate, it got its name from the practice of hanging the ears of criminals on it. Over the years it came to be known by a series of other names, and these include Arc of the Ears, Bib-Arrambla Gate, Gate of the Hands, Gate of the Pesos, Gate of the Horse, and Gate of the Sandland. Controversy over the gate erupted in the late nineteenth century when the gate fell into disrepair. Many considered it a ruin and a hinderance to the city's prosperity and called for its destruction. The opponents to its demolition included the President of the First Republic who decreed "it would be a shame for Granada and a disgrace to the Republic, since the monuments of Granada are the heritage of the human race." He would declare it a national monument in an effort to prevent its dismantling. This did not endear him to Granada's residents and when cholera became prevalent in 1884, the people declared that the gate had become a danger to the public's health and had it dismantled.

24. The kind of person who likes to wake up before anyone else, or just a creature that worms fear?

From Quiz You Won't Believe Your Ears

Answer: Early Bird & Early bird

"The early bird catches the worm" as a popular saying goes. It was first recorded as "The early bird catcheth the worm" in 'A collection of English proverbs' [SIC] in 1670. As to what it is based on, perhaps it is because worms are more active when the ground is moist - such as early in the morning when there is still dew around. Birds, of course, will have worked this out. In a more generalised sense "early bird" can refer to someone who is active early in the morning, or simply someone who gets in first on a project, or even a holiday. You can book a holiday, or even a flight, for an "early bird" discount. In researching this question I was tickled by an idiom that I had not heard before: "The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese." (There's bound to be a quiz in there somewhere.)

The man, who had taken them in, had the sole purpose of turning boys into donkeys and then selling them.

26. Most of us recall that it was Mike Tyson that bit off a piece of ear in a fight, but who was the boxer whose ear he bit off?

From Quiz I'm All Ears

Answer: Evander Holyfield

This fight, billed as the "Sound and the Fury", took place on June 28, 1997 and, at stake, was the WBA Heavyweight Championship. The prelude to the bout occurred seven months beforehand when Holyfield, a long odds underdog, defeated Tyson in the eleventh round of their bout. In the re-match Holyfield had won the first two rounds. With forty seconds remaining in the third round the boxers found themselves in a clinch. Tyson leaned into Holyfield's shoulder and bit off a piece of his opponents ear. The fight was stopped as the referees figured out what to do. They eventually allowed the fight to resume when Tyson tried to bite Holyfield's other ear. The referee stopped the fight and Tyson was disqualified. In what was to become the "Bite Fight", Tyson's camp claimed that the bite was a retaliation for Holyfield's head butt on Tyson while his opponents camp claimed the bite was a deliberate attempt to get disqualified to avoid a defeat by knock-out. Along with the disqualification Tyson also had to endure the loss of his boxing licence for a period of time.

From Quiz Renowned Big Ears

Daniel Craig states that as a child he was taunted about his ears and it was very hurtful. The premiere of 'Casino Royale', starring Daniel Craig as Bond, was on 14th November 2006, in London. By March 2007, the film had made over a billion dollars worldwide. Should the critics be eating humble pie?

30. Greek poets (mistakenly) named Harpocrates the god of silence, Hellenising his name after which Egyptian god of the new born sun?

From Quiz I'm All Ears

Answer: Horus

The name Harpocrates is an adaptation of an Egyptian name that translates to "Horus the child". The Egyptians created statues of Horus, depicting him as a naked child with his finger to his lips. This gesture symbolised childhood to the Egyptians but the Greeks mistook this as a gesture that meant "be silent", hence Harpocrates became the god of silence. There are other legends attributed to Harpocrates but one that rises regularly is that of Aphrodite giving a rose to Eros, her son and the god of love. Eros passed the rose onto Harpocrates on the understanding that he would keep any of his mother's indiscretions a secret. Hence the rose became a symbol of Harpocrates as well as silence and secrets which, in turn, gave rise to the term "sub rosa" (under the rose).
