Zombies Trivia Questions

1. Where was the idea of zombies believed to originate?

From Quiz
Zaniest Zombies

Answer: Haiti

The origin of zombies can be traced back to Haitian folklore. It was believed that a zombie was a corpse that was reanimated due to a sorcerer's magic. The term "zombie" was first used in 1819 but it wasn't until about a century later that the idea of a zombie became known worldwide. It was also believed that the Haitian leader Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier had an army of zombies. Duvalier's reign revolved around fear, so it was most likely that he used the people's belief in zombies to create more fear towards him.

2. In the movie "Zombieland", what was the number painted on Tallahassee's yellow car door?

From Quiz The World of Zombies

Answer: 3

"Zombieland" came out in 2009. Still, no one knows the significance of the number three in the movie.

3. Which 2004 British film, featuring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, was a humourous parody of other zombie films like 'Dawn of the Dead'?

From Quiz Zealous, Zymotic Zombies

Answer: Shaun of the Dead

Simon Pegg plays the titular character Shaun who tries to deal with his dull life during a zombie outbreak. The film features a cast of well-known British actors and comics including Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy, Jessica Stevenson and Peter Serafinowicz. Written by Pegg and frequent collaborator Edgar Wright, 'Shaun of the Dead' was a big hit amongst cinema-goers and industry critics, becoming one of the most popular British comedy films and gaining a significant cult following.

4. With vacations in Haiti quite affordable at the moment, Drew has booked his trip, but he is a bit worried about the rumors of zombie sightings! Zombies figure prominently in which Haitian religion?

From Quiz Abra Cadaver

Answer: voodoo & vodou & vodoun & vodun

A zombie is generally considered to be a corpse brought back to life by magical means. A bokor (sorcerer) can reanimate a corpse, and that corpse is then under the control of the bokor. Unlike the Houngans and Mambos (male and female priests), a bokor may be a practitioner of the darker aspects of Voodoo (Vodou). The creation of zombies is not a part of the proper Voodoo religion.

5. ANIMALS ZOMBIE QUESTION: What breed of zombified dog plays a big role in the movie "Resident Evil" (2002)?

From Quiz Zombies!

Answer: Doberman

In a wonderful action scene from the movie, star Milla Jovovich battles eight of the zombie Dobermans, dispatching the final one with some major kung fu. The poor creatures have been modified by the T-virus.

6. What is the proper classification of a zombie?

From Quiz Zaniest Zombies

Answer: undead

A mythological being that is not alive yet behaves as if it is alive is referred to as undead. Zombies are one such being. (Vampires are another example.) They are reanimated corpses, meaning the body of a zombie was alive at one point but not anymore, yet they still move and attack and do other things that a living person would do.

7. Walkers, infected, biters... there are a lot of names that can be given to zombies. What is another one that describes zombies?

From Quiz The World of Zombies

Answer: Macabre

Synonyms for macabre include: weird, unearthly, decay, horrible and gruesome, thus hailing this word as the closest zombie description. Zombies are also called "undead".

8. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin fight their way across America in which 2009 film?

From Quiz Zealous, Zymotic Zombies

Answer: Zombieland

'Zombieland' centres around a group of four people who find themselves working together after a strain of mad cow disease infects humans and initiates a zombie epidemic. The characters are named for places that are significant to them. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is on his way to see if his parents have survived the zombie outbreak in Columbus, Ohio; Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) wants desperately to get his hands on the last Twinkies in America; Wichita and Little Rock (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) are sisters who use their skills as con artists to survive by appropriating weapons and supplies from uninfected travellers. One of the most amusing scenes in the film features Bill Murray in a cameo role, who disguises himself as a zombie so that he can play golf uninterrupted. Ultimately, he is shot by Columbus when he is mistaken for an actual zombie.

9. Drew was flipping through television channels when he happened upon 'White Zombie'. He settled in to watch, and wondered - which well-known actor starred in the 1932 film?

From Quiz Abra Cadaver

Answer: Bela Lugosi

Directed by Victor Halperin, and produced by Edward Halperin, 'White Zombie' is considered to be the first full-length zombie movie. Filmed over the course of just eleven days, the set 'cannibalized' props from other recent horror movies, including 1931's 'Dracula' and 'Frankenstein'. Lugosi's co-stars included Madge Bellamy, Joseph Cawthorn and Robert Frazer. The band White Zombie took its name from the film, and scenes from the film have appeared in a few different contemporary movies.

10. What must you do to kill a zombie?

From Quiz Zaniest Zombies

Answer: destroy its brain

It is best to avoid confronting a zombie, especially if there are multiple zombies, but if you do encounter a zombie and wish to kill it, the way to do so is to destroy its brain. This is because without the brain, even a zombie cannot function. It can be done with a gun; however, the noise from the gun may attract more zombies. Cutting off zombie parts does nothing to kill the zombie, because it does not feel pain and, being undead, isn't going to be fatal to it. Since a zombie is not alive, its internal organs are of no use to them, so loss of blood means nothing to it. Even if you decapitate a zombie, the head will still be active, even if its body is no longer of any use. While dismemberment can slow down a zombie, it will not kill it.

11. Which zombie-centric American television series, starring Andrew Lincoln, has been very popular in the States since hitting screens in 2010?

From Quiz Zealous, Zymotic Zombies

Answer: The Walking Dead

Following the trend of many zombie films and television programmes, 'The Walking Dead' stars Andrew Lincoln in the central role of Rick Grimes, who searches for friends and family after zombies (referred to in the series as walkers due to their slow, shuffling gait) begin to populate America. The series itself is actually based upon a series of comics by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore, which began in 2003.

12. Drew stayed up all night watching zombie movies, and ended up bleary-eyed and curious. Three of the films he watched - 'Night of the Living Dead', 'Dawn of the Dead' and 'Day of the Dead' - were directed by which master of horror?

From Quiz Abra Cadaver

Answer: George A. Romero

'Night of the Living Dead'(1968), 'Dawn of the Dead' (1978) and 'Day of the Dead' (1985) are just three of Romero's cult masterpieces. Among numerous other films, he also directed, wrote and acted in 'The Crazies' (1973), and directed and wrote 'Monkey Shines' (1988) and 'The Dark Half' (1993). In 2005 he came out with the fourth installment of his 'Dead' series - (Land of the Dead). And, rather appropriately, George A. Romero is nicknamed 'Godfather of all Zombies'.

13. CELEBRITIES ZOMBIE QUESTION: Which star of "Zombieland" (2009) got into a scuffle with a photographer at La Guardia, and then said "With my daughter at the airport I was startled by a paparazzo, who I quite understandably mistook for a zombie"?

From Quiz Zombies!

Answer: Woody Harrelson

The movie broke $60 million in less than three weeks in release, becoming the highest-grossing zombie movie to that point. Harrelson has had run-ins with the law and has been arrested several times, including once for planting hemp seeds (he meant to be arrested, so that he could challenge Kentucky's marijuana possession laws).

14. What advantage does a graveyard have if you wish to hide from zombies?

From Quiz Zaniest Zombies

Answer: There are rarely any living people in graveyards.

Zombies prefer to go after the living, and so if you cannot get inside, the best place to be is in a place where there are few living people, like a graveyard. However, if a zombie sees or hears you in the graveyard, it will still enter hoping to bite you. Therefore, it is best to remain very still and very quiet.

15. In the book "Flip This Zombie" by Jesse Petersen, what was the powerful/above-average zombie called?

From Quiz Zombies!

19. What month is Zombie Awareness Month?

From Quiz Zaniest Zombies

Answer: May

Zombie Awareness Month is in May and is used to bring awareness towards zombies and a potential zombie apocalypse. The society responsible for the creation of Zombie Awareness Month-the Zombie Research Society-was founded in 2007 and set May as the month, and it was celebrated for the first time the following year. May is selected because most zombie movies are set in that month. It may first appear that October is a more appropriate month; however, zombies aren't directly related to Halloween, so October wasn't selected as the month to celebrate Zombie Awareness Month. During the month, people wear gray ribbons to signify the shadows. People also use the month to spread the word about zombies, so that people can better familiarize themselves with these creatures.

20. In the original "Plants vs. Zombies" computer game, which zombie closely resembled the late Michael Jackson?

From Quiz The World of Zombies

Answer: Dancing Zombie

Dancing Zombie's official almanac entry: "Any resemblance between Dancing Zombie and persons living or dead is purely coincidental". The game was released nearly a year before Jackson died. The original dancing zombie was changed later because of an objection on Michael Jackson's part that the game model too closely resembled him.

21. Which British broadcaster and journalist, known for his 'Screenwipe' and 'Gameswipe' review shows and as part of the cast of satirical news show '10 O'Clock Live', created the BAFTA-nominated zombie television series 'Dead Set'?

From Quiz Zealous, Zymotic Zombies

Answer: Charlie Brooker

'Dead Set' follows the events surrounding the contestants of the television programme 'Big Brother' as a zombie uprising occurs. Featuring former real housemates and several celebrities, including Davina McCall, the host of the actual 'Big Brother' series at the time, a group of survivors try to barricade themselves in the 'Big Brother' house and fight off the oncoming zombies while trying not to be bitten and turn into one of the undead themselves. The creator of the series himself, Charlie Brooker, appears as one of the zombies. 'Dead Set' was nominated for the BAFTA for Best Drama Serial in 2009, but lost out to 'Criminal Justice'.

23. What is believed to be the safest country to be in if you wish to survive a zombie apocalypse?

From Quiz Zaniest Zombies

Answer: Australia

Geographic location, population density, climate, and preparedness for a zombie apocalypse are factors in deciding which country is the safest. Based on these factors, it has been determined that Australia is the safest country. The country has a low population density, which is important because zombies prefer areas with lots of people, since that allows a greater abundance of food for them. Additionally, since Australia is an island, it can keep out zombies from other countries. Other safe countries that usually make these lists include Russia, Sweden, Canada, and the United States.

24. According to the movie "Day of the Dead", what is the effect of bleach poured on a zombie-bite wound?

Answer: The Zombie Survival Guide

Brooks' 'Zombie Survival Guide', though satirical, provides detailed explanations of how an outbreak might occur, how to fight off infection, and how to defend onself against an oncoming zombie. Additionally, it cites zombie outbreaks from history. The book spawned a sequel, 'World War Z', which instead of being a guide, recounts stories of various zombie outbreaks as told by survivors.

26. After reading 2006's 'Cell', Drew decided he did not really need a cell phone anymore. Which prolific author, known for his horror, suspense and fantasy novels, scared Drew into canceling his cell phone contract?

Stephen King's first novel 'Carrie' was published in 1974, and since then he has written more than 60 combined novels, short story collections and non-fiction books. From Quiz Zombies!

Answer: All You Zombies

The Heinlein story is punctuated "--All You Zombies--" and throws every time travel paradox one could imagine into the plot. The Hooters song hit #58 in America (they had more success with "And We Danced", which reached #21).

28. Which United States president's body did a doctor wish to reanimate not long after the president had died?

From Quiz Zaniest Zombies

Answer: George Washington

After George Washington had died, his body was kept on ice for a few days per Washington's request. He had been afraid of being buried alive, and so delaying his burial would prevent this from actually happening to him. A doctor by the name of William Thornton had arrived with the intent of treating Washington but he arrived shortly after Washington's death. Dr. Thornton believed Washington was too important of a person to just let die, so he planned on reanimating him. Thornton believed this was possible and had devised a plan to do so, which involved giving Washington a blood transfusion using the blood of a lamb. Washington's wife, Martha, declined the offer, believing her husband had served his time on Earth.

29. "Left 4 Dead" is a zombie-themed horror multiplayer video game. The "L4D" franchise also released a graphic novel/comics. What was the title of the first released graphic novel of "Left 4 Dead"?

30. In which series of books by Philip Pullman do some characters undergo a process called intercision, separating them from their daemon and effectively turning them into a zombified, soulless state?

From Quiz Zealous, Zymotic Zombies

Answer: His Dark Materials

In the universe of 'His Dark Materials', humans have supernatural animal companions known as daemons, which act effectively like souls. As such, a person and their daemon can never be too far apart from one another. In the events of the series, some characters are forced into participating in a horrific process called intercision, which in essence separates the participant from their soul. This, as mentioned above, places them in a state not dissimilar to being a zombie. Additionally, some hostile supernatural beings called Spectres can consume a daemon and render the unfortunate victim soulless. The protagonist of the series, Lyra Belacqua, doesn't completely undergo intercision, but is forced to leave her daemon, Pantalaimon, behind when she enters the World of the Dead in 'The Amber Spyglass'.
