Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With vacations in Haiti quite affordable at the moment, Drew has booked his trip, but he is a bit worried about the rumors of zombie sightings! Zombies figure prominently in which Haitian religion?

Answer: voodoo

A zombie is generally considered to be a corpse brought back to life by magical means. A bokor (sorcerer) can reanimate a corpse, and that corpse is then under the control of the bokor. Unlike the Houngans and Mambos (male and female priests), a bokor may be a practitioner of the darker aspects of Voodoo (Vodou). The creation of zombies is not a part of the proper Voodoo religion.
2. Drew was flipping through television channels when he happened upon 'White Zombie'. He settled in to watch, and wondered - which well-known actor starred in the 1932 film?

Answer: Bela Lugosi

Directed by Victor Halperin, and produced by Edward Halperin, 'White Zombie' is considered to be the first full-length zombie movie. Filmed over the course of just eleven days, the set 'cannibalized' props from other recent horror movies, including 1931's 'Dracula' and 'Frankenstein'. Lugosi's co-stars included Madge Bellamy, Joseph Cawthorn and Robert Frazer.

The band White Zombie took its name from the film, and scenes from the film have appeared in a few different contemporary movies.
3. Drew stayed up all night watching zombie movies, and ended up bleary-eyed and curious. Three of the films he watched - 'Night of the Living Dead', 'Dawn of the Dead' and 'Day of the Dead' - were directed by which master of horror?

Answer: George A. Romero

'Night of the Living Dead'(1968), 'Dawn of the Dead' (1978) and 'Day of the Dead' (1985) are just three of Romero's cult masterpieces. Among numerous other films, he also directed, wrote and acted in 'The Crazies' (1973), and directed and wrote 'Monkey Shines' (1988) and 'The Dark Half' (1993).

In 2005 he came out with the fourth installment of his 'Dead' series - (Land of the Dead). And, rather appropriately, George A. Romero is nicknamed 'Godfather of all Zombies'.
4. While surfing the web, Drew stumbled across a zombie site that made him smile. Which charitable group boasts the motto 'We make dead things deader', and has held an annual Zombie Con?

Answer: Zombie Squad

Zombie Squad was created in 2003 by a group of friends in Missouri. It has become an international organization, with a strong online participation, and has the stated purpose of being prepared for disaster and community service.
As a non-profit organization, it has been involved with charity events for the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and several other organizations.

Retaining a sense of humor while preparing for a 'Zombie Apocalypse' (their metaphor that covers any man-made or natural disaster), the group has had members from all walks of life - and has been open for anyone to join.
5. After his zombie movie marathon, Drew has decided to spend a bit of time reading - and picks up the comic book he just bought. What popular comic book series - featuring Rick Grimes and a band of characters struggling to survive after the world is overrun by zombies - is Drew planning on enjoying?

Answer: The Walking Dead

Created by Robert Kirkman (writer) and Tony Moore (artist) in 2003, 'The Walking Dead' is an ongoing story of survival after a zombie apocalypse. Besides winning the 2010 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series, the series inspired a television series (developed by Frank Darabont) by the same name.
6. After reading 2006's 'Cell', Drew decided he did not really need a cell phone anymore. Which prolific author, known for his horror, suspense and fantasy novels, scared Drew into canceling his cell phone contract?

Answer: Stephen King

Clayton Riddell is in Boston, finally realizing some artistic success with the sale of his graphic novel to a publisher, when his dream of a day becomes a nightmare. A mysterious signal turns everyone using a cell phone into a zombie - and he is left to witness utter horror as he attempts to both survive and return to his family in Maine.

Stephen King's first novel 'Carrie' was published in 1974, and since then he has written more than 60 combined novels, short story collections and non-fiction books. Many of his stories are set in his home state of Maine.
Some of his novels have been made into films, and King has had bit parts in several of them.
7. The disc jockey just announced that the next song to play would be by the Zombies, and Drew finds himself wondering - what country is this rock band from?

Answer: England

The Zombies formed in 1961 and had their first hit with 1964's 'She's Not There'. The song reached number twelve on the UK Singles Chart, and was also a top-ten hit in the US and Canada. The group has disbanded and regrouped over the years, but either as solo artists or together, they have continued to tour and record.
8. Drew has participated in plenty of charity walks and runs, but he is unsure about an upcoming event. Are there actually organized gatherings called zombie walks?

Answer: Yes

Zombie walks generally have a charity-based goal, with food drives being one of the more popular events. There are also walks that incorporate pub crawling, 'beauty' contests, concerts and dances.

A fairly common occurrence, especially in large cities, the first recorded zombie walk was held on August 19, 2001 in California. The first world record was set in Pennsylvania in 2006, with 894 participants.
9. The bartender hands Drew a drink list, and there it is! A traditional Zombie! But, he has to ask - the cocktail is made with fruit juices, apricot brandy, and which distilled alcohol?

Answer: rum

Believed to have originated in the 1930s in Hollywood, the Zombie was named for its effects upon the person imbibing it, and came to popularity during the 1939 New York World's Fair.

Supposedly created by Donn Beach at the Don the Beachcomber Restaurant - to help a customer suffering from a hangover - the drink's smooth and fruity taste disguises its strong alcohol content.
10. Drew entered 'Zombie' into an internet search engine, and one of the listed options was 'Rob Zombie'. Drew grinned as he realized that he saw the first movie Rob Zombie directed! Do you know the name of this 2003 film?

Answer: House of 1000 Corpses

Rob Zombie is a musician, director, screenwriter and film producer. While he was born Robert Bartleh Cummings, he legally changed his name to Rob Zombie in 1996. He founded White Zombie in 1985, but after disbandment in 1998, he continued on with a solo career.

In addition to directing 'House of 1000 Corpses', he wrote the screenplay, and while the movie was not a critical success, it has gained fame as a cult favorite.
