The Pantheon was constructed between 118-128 CE under the leadership of the Roman emperor Hadrian. Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon to St. Mary and the Martyrs in 609 after the building was gifted to the papacy by Byzantine emperor Phocas. Of all the ancient Roman buildings, the Pantheon has been one of the best preserved because of its constant use in church services.

Before 1829, there was only the Statute of Winchester relating to the governance of policing. This law dated back to the 13th century and was ill suited to a more modern age where towns and cities were growing rapidly with the Industrial Revolution and the spread of the railways. Although attempts had been made to establish a more effective police force, it was not until Sir Robert Peel's Police Act was passed, that a properly organized police force came into existence in London and was soon copied in other major cities in Britain. Initially, times were hard for the fledgling Metropolitan Police Force. Many men resigned due to the poor pay, however gradually they won over the public, gaining acceptance.

The Belgrano was launched in 1938 as the 'USS Phoenix' for the US Navy. She survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and went on to have a successful war campaign. Decommissioned in 1946, she was sold to Argentina in 1951. The incident in which the Belgrano was sunk has earned some controversy. She was outside the 200-mile total exclusion zone that Britain had declared as their campaign to retake the Falkland islands built up. On May 30th, the submarine 'Conqueror' spotted Belgrano and two escorting ships. Following discussions at the highest level of the British command, it was decided to engage the Belgrano. It is said that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was one of those who sanctioned the attack. At 15:57 local time on May 2nd, HMS Conqueror discharged three torpedoes, two of which exploded under the Belgrano. (The third also is thought to have hit but not exploded). The ship was abandoned and sank. In all, Chilean and other Argentinian ships rescued 772 survivors, but 323 people died.

The war ended in victory for Franco, who was to rule Spain for 36 years.

The Soviet Union shot down the U-2 spy plane piloted by Gary Francis Powers on May 1, 1960 at the time of the Cold War, during the tenure of President Dwight Eisenhower and Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev. At first, the US denied the mission but, when the Soviet government supplied proof of the event (including the pilot), Eisenhower was forced to admit it. Powers was convicted of spying and received a sentence of 3 years' imprisonment and 7 years' hard labor. After serving a year and nine months, he was released in 1962 in a prisoner-exchange for Rudolf Abel.

It also combined the kingdoms' separate parliaments, creating the Parliament of Great Britain. Ireland was largely unaffected by the Acts of Union, and remained a separate kingdom. A union between Great Britain and Ireland was achieved in January of 1801.

The RMS Atlantic, owned by the White Star Line, had her maiden voyage in 1871, and met with disaster on her 19th voyage. Crossing from Liverpool to New York City, the liner was heading for Halifax to take on more coal, but due to stormy conditions, the ship went off course. Following the collision with the rock, the lifeboats were all lost or destroyed, the liner went over on its side and the passengers and crew were forced to find a way to shore. Of the passengers and crew, 371 people survived, and at least 535 perished. Out of the 345 women and children aboard, only one child survived. The White Star Line also lost the RMS Tayleur, the RMS Republic, the SS Naronic - and of course, the RMS Titanic. In 1934 White Star Line and Cunard Line merged, and by 1949 Cunard owned all of White Star.
