Specific Flowers Trivia Questions

1. This many-colored rose variety might bring to mind a certain favored (and oh so dreamy) son and the amazing gift bestowed upon him.

From Quiz
For My Little Flame

Answer: Joseph's Coat

The Joseph's Coat Rose is a cross between the Hybrid Tea and a Polyantha Rose. It grows in large clusters on a shrub or as a climber. A single plant may produce many flowers in a variety of colors with many shades of pinks, yellows, oranges, and reds. In the Biblical narrative, Jacob favored Joseph most of all his twelve sons and gave to him a special coat of many colors. Joseph's brothers were jealous of him, and when he shared two of his dreams with them suggesting that they would one day bow down to him, they plotted to get rid of him. They spared his life, but sold him into slavery. Amazingly, his fortunes were turned around and Joseph ended up becoming Vizier of Egypt. This question was crafted by Phoenix Rising member JCSon.

2. Although often called thorns, what is the proper term for the sharp growths found on the stems of many roses?

From Quiz Romantic Red Roses!

Answer: Prickles

The sharp appendages on a rose stem are properly referred to as prickles. They are sharp growths that originate on the outer layer of the stem. Real thorns, such as those found on some citrus trees are actually modified stems. The purpose of the rose prickle is to help the plant hang onto other vegetation when growing around or over it as well as deterring some animals from eating the plant for lunch. The size and shape of prickles varies widely and is usually dependent upon the surrounding environment.

3. This member of the rose family keeps the Doctor away. Which one is it?

From Quiz Roses All

4. Although I painted some garden scenes that included roses, I am perhaps better known for more watery flowers. One of my works inspired the name of the Impressionist movement in art. Which rose am I?

From Quiz A Brush With Nature: Artists In The Rose Garden

Answer: Claude Monet

Rosa "Claude Monet", also called the "Artists' Rose", is a vigorous repeat-blooming hybrid tea rose characterised by scented flowers randomly splashed and striped with pink and apricot. It was introduced in 1992 by the French rose growers, Delbard. The first hybrid tea roses were created in the mid-nineteenth century and produced single blooms on long stems suitable for cutting; they were generally either unscented or only slightly scented. Modern hybrid teas tend to be bred with stronger fragrance. There is also another rose named "Monet": a modern large-flowered hybrid tea, with mauve-pink strongly scented flowers. Two of Monet's earlier works, "Flowering Garden at Sainte-Adresse" (1866), and "Woman in a Garden" (1867), feature rose bushes prominently, but he is more popularly known for his later paintings (1899 onwards) of water lilies in his garden at Giverny; his picture "Impression, Sunrise" (1872) gave its name to the Impressionist movement.

8. What colour is the very beautiful "John F. Kennedy Rose"?

9. Roses can be named after famous actresses as well. What rose is named for the actress who won three individual Academy Awards, but not for her most famous role in "Casablanca"(1942)?

From Quiz For My Little Flame

Answer: Rosa Ingrid Bergman

Rosa Ingrid Bergman is a rose with petals that are dark red and velvety. This is another Hybrid Tea rose which was hybridised by Poulsen in 1984 as a cross between the red hybrid tea 'Precious Platinum' (Dickson 1974) and an unnamed seedling. Ingrid Bergman , one of the world's most talented actresses filmed movies in Swedish, English, German and Italian and won three Oscars: Best Actress for "Gaslight" (1944) and "Anastasia: (1956); and a Best Supporting Actress for "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974). While everybody wanted to talk to her about her role in "Casablanca", she did not: "I made so many films which were more important, but the only one people ever want to talk about is that one with Bogart." This question was crafted by Phoenix Rising member 1nn1

10. Now, let's go ahead and re-pot it into something completely unsuitable. What might that be?

From Quiz 10 Ways to Kill An Orchid

Answer: a pot with no drainage

Drainage should be a top consideration when choosing an orchid pot: it needs to drain easily. A regular plastic pot with holes on the bottom could well be good enough, but you can also use a fancy orchid pot or even mount your orchid on a piece of wood. The type of pot or mount you choose will depend on your resources and growing conditions.

13. Flowers didn't feature much in my Blue Period, but one of my Rose Period paintings had roses in it. Which rose am I?

From Quiz A Brush With Nature: Artists In The Rose Garden

Answer: Picasso

Rosa "Picasso" is a floribunda with hand painted colouring: the petals have a silvery base colour overlaid with deep pink to red feathery blotches, and a silvery reverse; the base of each of the 25 petals is white, creating what is called an "eye" in the centre. It flowers over a long period, but has no fragrance. Floribunda roses started to appear in the early 20th century when growers crossed hybrid tea roses with polyantha roses: the resulting plants had the wider colour range of the hybrid tea and the clusters of flowers of the polyantha. Floribundas are ideal for bedding and hedging. Pablo Picasso was one of the founders of the Cubist movement, and his works evolved through several styles. His Blue Period paintings (1901-1904), influenced by his reaction to the suicide of a friend, are characterised by their monochromatic appearance and sad facial expressions. This was immediately followed by the Rose Period (1904-1906), when warmer colours and more cheerful subjects appeared; the painting "Boy with a Pipe" (1905) features a boy wearing a chaplet of roses, with more roses in the canal-painting style on the wall behind him.

14. Tulips originate from what part of the world?

From Quiz My TU-cents on the TULIP.

Even apple seeds contain amygdalin (a cyanide and sucrose compound), but in amounts that the body can safely detoxify. While used in some recipes and health food remedies, the amount of apricot kernels that can be toxic, especially to children, is as little as 10 kernels. Better not to risk it

China roses, for the most part, had small, relatively unattractive, blooms, but those blooms appeared repeatedly throughout the Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Crossing the China roses with the European roses produced new roses with large attractive blooms that bloomed repeatedly through Spring, Summer, and Fall.
