Stephen Donaldson Trivia Questions

1. Where in the Land does Thomas Covenant first appear after being summonsed?

From Quiz
Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: Kiril Thendor

Thomas Covenant is summoned to the Land by Drool Rockworm to Kiril Thendor, Heart of Thunder in Mount Thunder. However, he is there for a very short amount of time before Lord Foul transports him to Kevin's Watch where he (Lord Foul) gives Covenant a message for the Lords of the Land. Garrotting Deep is a significant place in book two of the first chronicles. Isenguard is from the writings of Tolkien and not relevant to the Unbeliever.

2. In the prologue, what new weapon does Belleger have that they hope to use against the Amikan sorcerers?

From Quiz The Seventh Decimate

Answer: Repeating rifles

Repeating rifles are the new thing. They may be the only thing available with which to kill the enemy sorcerers, who stand far back from the main combat. With the current technology nothing else has sufficient range. At this point in the story it is unknown if the bullets will actually kill the sorcerers. Of the other options I have not found any reference to anti-magic missiles outside of my imagination, although anti-magic appears in fantasy fiction and anti-missile missiles exist in the real world. Anti-matter missiles are also found in science fiction literature. The ultimate joke refers to a Monty Python sketch, and the incredibly stupid Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal is from "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy".

3. What is the name of the most recent novel that Thomas Covenant had written when Linden Avery enters his life at the beginning of "The Wounded Land"?

From Quiz Fun in the Sunbane: Thomas Covenant Trivia

Answer: "Or I Will Sell My Soul for Guilt"

Covenant is a successful novelist. His last novel explored the idea that innocence is impotent, and that only the guilty are powerful. "That Beauty and Truth Shall Not Pass Utterly" is a phrase from the "First Chronicles" associated with Kevin Landwaster. "The Sun is my Enemy" is the name of a book by Henrietta Aladjem about her struggles with chronic illness. In the "Second Chronicles", the people of the Land certainly had reason to regard the sun as their enemy. "Leprosy, I'm Not Half the Man I Used to Be" is a parody of a line from the Beatles song "Yesterday"!

4. When we first meet Terisa Morgan, where is she doing volunteer work?

From Quiz "The Mirror of Her Dreams" by Stephen Donaldson

Answer: A church mission office

Morgan is bored when the story opens. She looks around the place and wonders if she really makes any difference. Morgan also gets support from her father, but the charity work at the center provides her with something to do.

5. What disease does Thomas Covenant suffer from?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: Leprosy

Thomas Covenant once had the world at his feet. A successful writer, happily married with a young son, his world falls apart when he contracts leprosy. His wife and son leave him and he is shunned by the community he lives in.

6. Thomas Covenant, a writer from our world, has which disease?

From Quiz Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Answer: Leprosy

It was the leprosy that led to an infection in his finger that resulted in two of his fingers being amputated. A disfigurement that figures greatly in the legends of The Land.

7. When the un-believer was previously in the Land, the High Lord was Lord Prothall. Who is the current High Lord?

From Quiz The Illearth War

Answer: Elena

Elena is the product of the rape of her mother, Lena, by Thomas Covenant in the first Chronicles. The relationship between the two is a significant thread in this novel, the ur-Lord filled with self-loathing and Elena filled with love. These feelings and the extent to which others know of the true relationship between the two is also an major theme throughout this book.

8. Thomas Covenant is referred to as the Unbeliever. However he has another sobriquet based on what he carries but tries to hide; what is this name?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: White Gold Wielder

The Unbeliever wears a ring of white gold. It is his wedding ring although his wife left him and took their son when Thomas was diagnosed with leprosy. In the Land, white gold is outside of the creation and has immense power. The possession of the white gold is why Thomas Covenant was the one who was summonsed. Stormbringer is the sword of Elric of Melnibone, Sharplance is the nickname of a minor character in the "Gardens of the Moon" by Steven Erikson and the sunbane is of significance in the Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

9. Throughout the "Second Chronicles", why are the people of the land afraid to enter Andelain, in spite of its beauty and loveliness?

From Quiz Fun in the Sunbane: Thomas Covenant Trivia

Answer: People have gone mad after meeting the spirits of the dead there

Andelain is the heart of the Land, and the only part of it that successfully resists the Sunbane. Andelain is a place of great natural beauty but the people of the Land cannot understand how it can resist the Sunbane. Since the advent of the Sunbane, human sacrifice has been practised in the Land. When people enter Andelain, spirits of dead people they have known appear to them. The few people who have since dared to enter Andelain have been driven mad by feelings of guilt and remorse upon being confronted with dead relatives they have allowed to be killed. Covenant first learns these things in "The Wounded Land."

10. Why does Terisa have so many mirrors at home?

From Quiz "The Mirror of Her Dreams" by Stephen Donaldson

Answer: To reassure herself that she exists

Morgan has begun to feel that her place in life is meaningless. The profusion of mirrors is not, for her, a sign of vanity. Rather, they remind her that she is not fading away.

11. When Covenant first arrives in the Land he is befriended by the folk of which village?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: Mithil Stonedown

The people of the Land live in harmony with the world around them. Covenant is found by Lena and introduced to the wonders of Hurtloam and Aliantha. After meeting her family, things begin to go wrong when Covenant loses control and commits a terrible crime. Despite this, Lena's mother agrees to lead Covenant to Revelstone to deliver his message to the Lords.

12. Covenant is transported to a place known as what?

From Quiz Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Answer: The Land

Revelstone is the seat of government within The Land. Elohim are a race of beings encountered in the second Chronicles. The Andelanian Hills are a region within The Land.

13. At Revelstone, Covenant meets another person from 'his' world: Hile Troy, who is the warmark. What disadvantage does he have that would seem to prevent him being effective as a war leader?

From Quiz The Illearth War

Answer: He is blind.

Blindness would seem to be tricky when in command of soldiers. However, using the curing powers of the Land, Hile Troy is able to see although he still has no eyes, just empty eye sockets. In the world that both Thomas Covenant and Hile Troy come from, Hile Troy was on the ninth floor of a burning building and is presumably dead in that world.

14. The previous attempt of Lord Foul to control the Land resulted in the desolation. Prior to the desolation, the High Lord Kevin hid the seven wards of lore. To whom did he entrust the first ward?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: Giants

In the many years since they received it from the giants, the first ward has been studied but not mastered by the Lords. Each ward is intended to give instructions as to how to find the next. The quest in Lord Foul's Bane results in the finding of the second ward.

15. What geographical feature forms the main boundary between Belleger and Amika?

From Quiz The Seventh Decimate

Answer: Line River

The Line River separates the two warring nations. The sorcerers, also called magists and theurgists, stand up on the ramparts overlooking the valley where all the battles have occurred. This puts the main battleground and troops within their range, but not the enemy sorcerers. As far as anyone knows or can remember, Amika and Belleger were once one realm, but no other nations are known to exist. The Landsdrop is found in the "Thomas Covenant" novels by Stephen Donaldson, the Circumfence on Terry Pratchett's Discworld and the Third Reach of the Unknown is mentioned in the first volume of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams.

16. In "The Wounded Land", Covenant is poisoned with magical venom for the first time by what method?

From Quiz Fun in the Sunbane: Thomas Covenant Trivia

Answer: Bitten by a creature with snakes in place of arms

A man named Nassic is punished for committing a murder by being exposed to the first rays of the Sunbane, causing him to undergo a transformation into a monstrous creature with snake-arms. Nassic attacks Covenant and injects him with a magical venom. This is part of Lord Foul's plan to unbalance Covenant, as the venom causes Covenant to become delirious and to lose control of his wild magic, with dangerous consequences. Covenant is repeatedly attacked by venomous creatures during the trilogy, including a spider, bees, and poisonous rats.

17. Terisa has trouble remembering something. What is it?

From Quiz "The Mirror of Her Dreams" by Stephen Donaldson

Answer: Most of her dreams

When we meet Terisa, she does not find this condition to be a relief. It adds to her sense that her life is becoming less important in the 'real' world.

18. To what tribe do the Bloodguard belong?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: Haruchai

Originally a warlike race from the Westron Mountains, the Haruchai are so impressed by the Lords of the Land that they swear an oath to protect them. The chosen protectors become the Bloodguard; they show no emotion, require no sleep and are masters of unarmed combat. Covenant is given the title of ur-Lord and he is given Bannor as his protector.

19. In the first book, Covenant rapes a woman. Her name?

From Quiz Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Answer: Lena

Lena is the daughter of Atiaran and Trell. Faer Callendril-mate is one of the Lords. Maerl is a rock garden in The Land.

20. By using the corrupting powers of the Illearth stone, which of the Lords' allies has Lord Foul almost annihilated?

From Quiz The Illearth War

Answer: Giants

Lord Foul's three most powerful servants, the ravers, have possessed three giants and slaughtered all other giants found at Seareach. Only those giants elsewhere survived the massacre. The Bloodguard are still true to the Lords, although towards the end those that picked up a fragment of the Illearth Stone also become vulnerable to the power of Lord Foul. The Illearth stone, the cause of the ill earth, is the source of the book's title.

21. Thomas Covenant is escorted towards Revelstone so that he may deliver a message from Lord Foul. As part of this journey, he is taken on board a boat steered by the giant, Saltheart Foamfollower. On which river does this occur?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: Soulease River

For the first part of the journey Covenant is escorted from Mithil Stonedown over the Andelianuan Hills by Atiarian Trell-mate, a tense journey since Covenant has raped her daughter. As they reach the Soulease River, Saltheart Foamfollower is heading upstream to the Council of Lords at Revelstone. The boat, described as a skiff is powered by the songs of the giant. The Mithil River is earlier in the tale, close to Kevin's Watch and Mithil Stonedown, where The unbelievers journey starts. The river Ar can be found in the Elric of Melnibone by Michael Moorcock, which tells of Elric's first leaving Melnibone and gaining the sword Stormbringer. The River Ankh is found flowing (although that might be too fluid a word) on Discworld as described by Terry Pratchett.

22. At the start of the prince's quest to find the tome containing the Seventh Decimate, he is accompanied by guardsman, teamsters and a sorcerer devoid of magic (as all of Belleger was). In which direction do they set off?

From Quiz The Seventh Decimate

Answer: East, into the trackless desert

The only trace or hint of the book, Hexin Morrow's 'Seventh Decimate', is in the frail memory of the very elderly Magister Altimar. When asked where the book can be found he responds tersely, "In a library of course." His further response to the question of where the library can be found is a slowly spoken set of statements: "I would say." "In the east." "Somewhere." "In the east."

23. Near the end of "The Wounded Land" Covenant and his companions meet the giants of the Search in Sarangrave Flat. Soon afterwards they are menaced by what creatures?

From Quiz Fun in the Sunbane: Thomas Covenant Trivia

Answer: Skest, creatures made of acid

The skest are servants of the Lurker of the Sarangrave and try to force Covenant and his party into the waters of the swamp, so the Lurker can capture them. The Sur-jheherrin rescue the party, as they are able to neutralise the skest with their muddy bodies. Sunbane-warped cavewights and flying poisonous insects menace Covenant's party elsewhere in the Land.

24. Terisa looks into one of her mirrors. She notices someone other than herself! Even more frighteningly, the man walks through the glass surface and into her room. He announces himself as Geraden. What does he tell her?

From Quiz "The Mirror of Her Dreams" by Stephen Donaldson

Answer: He needs her help

The young man is an apprentice craftsman, from the country of Mordant. He says he thought Terisa was a magician, because she owns so many mirrors.

25. What message does Lord Foul give Covenant to tell the Lords?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: That Drool Rockworm has the Staff of Law

Foul speaks to Covenant as he is transported to the Land. "Say to the Council of Lords, and to High Lord Prothall son of Dwillian, that the uttermost limit of their span of days upon the Land is seven times seven years from this present time. Before the end of those days are numbered, I will have the command of life and death in my hand. And as a token that what I say is the one word of truth, tell them this: Drool Rockworm, Cavewight of Mount Thunder, has found the Staff of Law ..."

26. This rape produced a daughter. What is her name?

From Quiz Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Answer: Elena

Linden is Covenant's companion, from our world, in the second Chronicles. Alhana and Polgara are characters from the Dragonlance stories and the Belgariad, respectively.

27. The being Amok appears in Revelstone, much to the consternation of the Lords since he arrived undetected. What does Amok turn out to be a guide to?

From Quiz The Illearth War

Answer: The Seventh Ward

Amok is a creation of the High Lord Kevin. It would seem he has appeared at the wrong time, as the Lords have only recovered the second ward so far. This in turn is caused by the actions of the unbeliever, who manages to trigger his appearance unintentionally. Amok reminds me of an annoying computer game. Unless the right questions are asked, the responses given are meaningless and infuriating. Of the other options, the Staff of law was recovered in the first book of the chronicles, "Lord Foul's Bane". The Arch of Time has the function of limiting the power of both the Creator and the Despisor in the Land. The Vortex of Trepidation appears as a creation to dishearten the defenders later in the story.

28. Following Thomas Covenant's delivery of the message from Lord Foul to the Lords in Revelstone it is determined to commence a quest. What is the quest set to obtain?

From Quiz Lord Foul's Bane

Answer: Staff of Law

The message conveyed from Lord Foul to the Lords via Thomas Covenant in part states that the Staff of Law has been found by Drool Rockworm and that if the Lords do not manage to take it, then Droll Rockworm will be enthroned in Revelstone in 2 years. But even if they do regain it, the message claims that Lord Foul will be in control in 49 years. The Arch of Time is an important artefact in the creation of the Land. Amongst other things it prevents the Creator of the Land directly interfering with the actions of Lord Foul, although he can do so indirectly and did so by causing Thomas Covenant to be summoned. The Mirror of Memory is from the first tales of Elric of Melnibone by Michael Moorcock and the Total Perspective Vortex from the writings of Douglas Adams.

29. The seventh decimate is to be found in a library, but what name does this collection of information go by?

From Quiz The Seventh Decimate

Answer: Library of the Last Repository

Starting with the wrong answers, the Miskatonic University Library is found in the works of HP Lovecraft. The Library of Trantor can be found in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. Finally the Library of St. John the Beheaded come from the television series Doctor Who. This brings us to the Last Repository, described as the last because those "who care for it cannot flee again. They are not warriors. They cannot defeat their enemies.". For this reason the librarian is dissatisfied by the perpetual warfare between Belleger and Amika which leaves two weak states. He would much prefer strong kingdoms, to ensure a buffer zone between the library and hostile nations further afield.

30. Why was Findail, the appointed of the Elohim who first appears in "The One Tree", such a misery guts?

From Quiz Fun in the Sunbane: Thomas Covenant Trivia

Answer: He had a doom placed upon him that would cost him his independent existence

Throughout the ages of the Land, the Elohim have responded to crises threatening the earth by appointing one of their number to meet the peril. On a number of such occasions, the appointed one has sacrificed his or her own being, e.g., when one was bound into the Colossus of the Fall to protect the Land's forests from Ravers. Findail was full of self-pity and desperately tried to avoid his fate but was ultimately unsuccessful.
