Forbidden Planet Trivia Questions

1. When Morbius demonstrates that his robot is incapable of harming intelligent life forms, at which character does he have the robot point the blaster?

From Quiz
Forbidden Planet

Answer: Commander Adams

The robot is first ordered to blast a plant, which it does. Then Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) tells Robbie to kill Commander Adams (Leslie Nielsen). Robby is conflicted between a direct order and his inability to harm a human being. He starts to short circuit, but Morbius cancels the order before any damage is done to the robot.

2. Who portrayed the character of Commander John Adams?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Leslie Nielsen

Although more popularly known for his roles in movies such as "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun", Leslie Nielsen played a more serious role as the commander of the rescue ship in this film. Later, in the film, Dr. Morbius chided the commander by saying that it really didn't take any brains to be the commander, just a loud voice.

3. What character actor played Chief Quinn, an engineer on the spaceship, C-57D?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Richard Anderson

Anderson had a brief movie career appearing in minor roles in several 1950s "B" movies and as a guest on many TV dramas and anthology programs. He is probably best known for portraying Oscar Goldman on the popular '70s action/adventure TV shows "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "The Bionic Woman".

4. What was the name of the planet that the crew had been assigned to investigate?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Altair IV

The crew had been assigned to investigate the fate of the members of the Bellerophon mission to Altair IV. Altair is the brightest star in the Aquila constellation.

5. After Commander Adams kisses Morbius' daughter, Altaira (Anne Francis), which of her animal "friends" tries to attack them?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: a tiger

At the tiger approaches, Altaira thinks it is still friendly, but when it growls and leaps off a cliff on the attack, the gallant commander blasts it into oblivion. Altaira doesn't understand at first what had happened to change its behavior.

6. What was the name of the robot featured in this film?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Robby

I was thrilled to see Robby the Robot in this movie. Robby was "tinkered together" by Dr. Morbius. Even though a bit on the clunky side, Robby demonstrated superior intelligence and interestingly enough, conformed to Asimov's 'laws of robotics.' Upon arrival to greet the crew, Robby said that, "If you do not speak English, I am at your disposal with 187 other languages along with their various dialects and subtongues."

7. To please Commander Adams, what gems does Altaira have Robby the Robot make as an accessory for her new dress?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: emeralds

Commander Adams reprimands Altaira for her choice of clothing designs with really high hemlines, feeling it is too skimpy to wear around his crew (remember this was the 1950s). She has Robbie design and manufacture more "modest" attire which includes emerald gemstones that the robot also manufactures.

8. What was the name of the original inhabitants of the planet?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Krell

The Krell were a highly, technologically advanced society, unfortunately having engineered their own doom more than 2000 centuries ago.

9. Who directed this movie?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Fred Wilcox

Wilcox directed less than a dozen movies between 1938 and 1960. Along with "Forbidden Planet" he supervised the filming of "The Secret Garden" (1949), "Lassie Come Home" (1943) and his last movie, "I Passed for White" (1960). Wilcox passed away in 1964 at age 56.

10. What was the profession of Dr. Morbius?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: philologist

Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) was a doctor of philology. His expertise in languages and linguistics allowed him to decipher the writings of the Krell and thus allowed him to acquire some of their scientific knowledge.

11. What comestible does Robby the robot produce for the ship's cook?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: whiskey

When the ship's cook (Earl Holliman) asks Robby where he can get some "good stuff", Robby is at first confused as to what the cook means. Robby is given a sample, which he quaffs down and analyzes. Later, he manages to make 60 gallons (480 pints) of whiskey for the cook.

12. Which actress played the beautiful, yet naive daughter of Dr. Morbius?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Anne Francis

Anne Francis had appeared in 16 or so films before landing her memorable role in "Forbidden Planet." Altaira had never seen any other people except for her father, until the arrival of Commander Adam's expedition.

13. In a hilarious scene, James Dirocco, the ship's cook, (Earl Holliman) wanted to know if the robot could get him some of the "real stuff". What did he want?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: bourbon

The ship's cook wanted to know where he could get some bourbon. He had a bottle, apparently his last, that he gave to Robby. After taking a big gulp, the cook gave the bottle to Robby, who poured the remainder of the bottle into his analyzer. The cook, mortified to see the last of his liquor drain into Robby's analyzer, exclaimed, "You low-living contraption! I oughta take a can opener to you!" Nevertheless, later in the film, Robby, as promised, produced 480 pints (60 gallons) of "genuine Kansas City bourbon," for the cook. Naturally, the cook was eternally grateful. "Any time you're hard up for lube oil, let me know."

14. Which character said, "No beer, no women, no pool parlors, nothing. Nothing to do but throw rocks at tin cans, and we gotta bring our own tin cans."?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: Cookie

The ship's cook does not seem as impressed with Altiar IV as some of the officers are. With his supply of liquor running low, he may have felt restless and impatient to have the mission completed and get back to Earth.

15. What happened to Dr. Ostrow when he used the "plastic educator"?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: He died from the effect.

Unfortunately, Doctor Ostrow, while temporarily able to significantly enhance his I.Q., even beyond that reached by Dr. Morbius, succumbed to the same fate as the Bellerophon captain. However, with his dying words, he revealed the secret of the Krell's demise as well as the secret of the monster that had been creating havoc. "Monsters from the id."

16. What ultimately happened to Dr. Morbius?

From Quiz Forbidden Planet

Answer: He perished in the destruction of Altair IV.

In the final dramatic scene, Dr. Morbius reluctantly acknowledged that he was, in fact, the source of the monster that destroyed their original expedition. In order to prevent the potentially deadly technology of the Krell from reaching Earth, Dr. Morbius told Commander Adams how to initiate the Krell self-destruct device. We saw Robby at the controls, Altaira embracing the commander, and the destruction of the planet, from the viewscreen of the ship, as it began its journey back to Earth.
