Beatles Anthology Trivia Questions

From Quiz
The Beatles Anthology 3

Answer: Glass Onion

This was one of John's and eventually ended up on 'The White Album'. In this early demo version John has very few of the lyrics finalized, so repeats the same verse over and over. The lyrics are reproduced as they appear on 'Anthology', which might be slightly different from the finalized versions.

2. 'Where did we lose the touch, that used to mean so much, it always made me feel so...'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 1

Answer: Free As A Bird

John had recorded an unfinished version of 'Free As A Bird' before his death, sometime around 1977. In 1990 Paul, George, and Ringo worked on it, making it a true Beatles' song.

3. 'Do you, don't you want me to love you? I'm coming down fast but I'm miles above you. Tell me, tell me, tell me the answer, you may be a lover but you ain't no dancer.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 3

Answer: Helter Skelter

This song was one of the ones that serial killer Charles Manson and his 'Family' used as an anthem for the revolution that they were trying to start. In fact, the words 'Helter Skelter' were found written on the wall in the blood of one of their victims. Many other songs from 'The White Album' were interpreted by Manson as the Beatles calling out to him to start the revolution for them.

4. 'You tell lies thinking I can't see, you can't cry 'cause you're laughing at me.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 2

Answer: I'm Down

The Beatles often ended their concerts with either 'Twist and Shout' or 'Long Tall Sally' because they liked to finish with fun, fast-paced numbers. Paul wrote 'I'm Down' in the same vein, so they would have another song to choose from. It released as the B-side of the 'Help!' single.

5. 'You know I love you. I'll always be true, so please...'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 1

Answer: Love Me Do

'Love Me Do' was the Beatles' first release and was recorded three times, each time with a different drummer (Pete Best, Ringo Starr, and Andy White).

6. 'In their sties with all their backing they don't care what goes on around. In their eyes there's something lacking, what they need's a damned good whacking.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 3

Answer: Piggies

In the original version of this song they aren't 'clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon', they're eating their 'pork chops'.

7. 'Here I stand head in hand turn my face to the wall. If she's gone I can't go on feeling two foot small.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 2

Answer: You've Got to Hide Your Love Away

This was one of John's songs that was played entirely on acoustic guitars, and was 'taken from conception to completion in less than two hours' (Anthology 2 insert notes). 'Norwegian Wood' and 'This Bird Has Flown' are really the same song.

8. 'How do you do what you do to me, I wish I knew. If I knew how you do it to me, I'd do it to you.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 1

Answer: How Do You Do It

This song was written by Mitch Murray, and was George Martin's choice for the A-side of their first single. The Beatles didn't like it and felt strongly about using only their own songs for singles, and George gave in. He later gave the song to Gerry and the Pacemakers who took it to #1. The Beatles' first single was released with 'Love Me Do' on the A-side, and 'P.S. I Love You' on the B-side.

9. 'Desmond has a barrow in the market place, Molly is the singer in the band. Desmond says to Molly 'girl I like your face', and Molly says this as she takes him by the hand...'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 3

Answer: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

This version of 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' took three days to record but was never used. This recording marks the first time that the Beatles brought in session musicians to work on a recording that they subsequently didn't use.

10. 'Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say. I said something wrong now I long for...'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 2

15. 'And now my life has changed in oh so many ways, my independence seems to vanish in the haze.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 2

Answer: Help & Help!

17. 'She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh. I told her I didn't and crawled out to sleep in the bath. And when I awoke I was alone...'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 2

Answer: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

Originally titled just 'This Bird Has Flown', this song was recorded for the 'Rubber Soul' album. This is the first song that George played sitar on, and is in fact the first time a sitar was used in a pop song. The version of this song heard on 'Anthology 2' has much more sitar than the version that was eventually released.

18. 'If there's anything that you want, if there's anything I can do. Just call on me and I'll send it along...'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 1

This was the A-side of their third single, and one of the five songs that they recorded for a Swedish radio program. Their popularity in Sweden grew at about the same rate and time as it did in Britain, so their first overseas concert (not counting the early Hamburg days) was in Sweden.

21. 'You think you lost your love, well I saw her yesterday. It's you she's thinking of, and she told me what to say.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 1

Released as a single in August of 1963, where it remained # 1 for five weeks. Then it made a second appearance in the #1 spot in December of 1963. It is considered to be the song which really cemented the Beatles' popularity in Great Britain.

22. '...don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better. Remember to let her into your heart, then you can start to make it better.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 3

Answer: Hey Jude

This song originally began life as 'Hey Jules', a little tune Paul put together to comfort John's son Julian who was upset about the split of his parents. It evolved in to a massive hit for the Beatles. How many of us can remember dancing to it as teenagers?

23. 'Let me tell you how it will be, there's one for you nineteen for me. 'Cause I'm the _______, yeah I'm the _______.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 2

Answer: Taxman & Tax Man

This is a George Harrison song which was written about the ridiculous amount of tax that they were required to pay. They really only got to keep one pound out of every twenty they made. I believe that Britain has changed its tax structure since then (to discourage high earners from leaving the country to avoid the excessive taxation), but I'm not entirely positive.

Answer: Twist and Shout

This was another one of the songs that they performed at the 'Royal Command Performance'. John caused a bit of a stir when he opened the song by asking, 'Would the people in the cheaper seats clap their hands? And the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewellery.'

29. 'Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see. It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out. It doesn't matter much to me.'

From Quiz The Beatles Anthology 2

Answer: Strawberry Fields Forever

The recording of this song marked a whole new era in the Beatles' careers. With the pressures of touring gone, they took a new, more relaxed approach to recording, taking time to experiment with songs. They took five months to lay down the final versions of this and 'Penny Lane', which is very different from the 30 songs a year that they had averaged previous to this.

30. 'Close your eyes and I'll kiss you, tomorrow I'll miss you, remember I'll always be true. And then while I'm away I'll write home every day...'

Answer: All My Loving

This was the first song the Beatles performed on their first appearance of 'The Ed Sullivan Show'. An estimated 73 million people tuned in to watch as the Beatles carved themselves a niche in American pop culture.
