Lead singer Eddie Vedder wrote the lyrics for this song shortly after first meeting the rest of the band on his arrival in Seattle from San Diego. Vedder has said that the song "Western Sky" by American Music Club was the inspiration for his lyrics. "Black" was voted the ninth best ballad of all time by readers of "Rolling Stone" in 2011.

Nirvana's song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was off their second album "Nevermind" (released in the U.S. in 1991), which was produced by Butch Vig and reached number six on "The Billboard Hot 100". After the record hit shelves, Weird Al Yankovic later went on to write a parody of the song in which he titled "Smells Like Nirvana". Kurt Cobain claimed in an interview that he was "flattered' about the parody. Sadly on April 5, 1994 Kurt Cobain was found dead at his Seattle home, from a self-inflicted gun shot wound. He was only 27 years old.
