Family in Bands Trivia Questions

1. Which band achieved UK top 20 hits in the 60s, 70s and 80s and were led by brothers Ray and Dave Davies?

From Quiz
Bands Of Brothers

Answer: The Kinks

The Kinks never received the plaudits of bands such as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones yet their contribution to music and the influence they had was probably just as important. Artists as diverse as The Ramones, Van Halen and Oasis have all mentioned the influence the Davies brothers had on them while Pete Townshend of The Who and Brain May from Queen have also paid tribute to the brother's talents. The Kinks first achieved UK chart success in 1964 with "You Really Got Me", the first of 19 top 20 hits, culminating with "Come Dancing" in 1982 before splitting up in 1996 due to rising creative tensions between the brothers. Vocalist and main songwriter Ray along with guitarist Dave announced that they had reformed the band in 2018, but sibling rivalry seems to rear its head whenever they are together meaning that new material from the band continues to take a back seat.

2. Which recreationally unimaginative US musical brothers spent the times when they were alone 'playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51' (that is when they weren't smoking cigarettes and watching 'Captain Kangaroo')?

From Quiz 'O Brother, WHO Art Thou?' Musical Brother Acts

Answer: The Statler Brothers

Prolific country and gospel hall-of-famers from Staunton, Virginia, now most remembered outside country music circles for the 1966 crossover hit 'Flowers on the Wall' (number two Country, number four National Billboard), from which these lyrics are taken. The band contained two real brothers in leaders Harold and Don Reid, but no-one named Statler. The Statlers often incorporated comedy routines into their repertoire, especially Harold. They were regulars on the "Johnny Cash Show" in the late 60s and had their own successful TV show on Nashville's CNN network in the 1990s. They disbanded in 2002.

3. This harmonious musical duo achieved their greatest success in the late '50s and early '60s with hits like "Bye Bye Love", "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream" and "Cathy's Clown". Which brothers are these?

From Quiz We Happy Few, We Band of Brothers

Answer: The Everly Brothers

Don and Phil Everly were bitten by the singing bug at a young age. As children, they performed with their parents as The Everly Family on their father's radio show in Iowa. The pair started writing songs as teenagers, and after Don graduated high school they moved to Nashville to pursue their musical dreams. Known for their close vocal harmonies and signature black steel-string guitars, the duo had a string of country and pop hits beginning with 1957's "Bye Bye Love". Disagreements between the brothers and problems with drug addiction came to a head in the summer of 1973, when Don showed up drunk at a concert in California, prompting Phil to throw down his guitar and leave in the middle of the second set. "The tension between us existed from day one, from birth, and will go on forever," Phil explained to "Rolling Stone" in 1986. Don and Phil didn't really speak to each other for 10 years, until they put aside their differences to stage a comeback in 1983 and record several successful reunion albums. The duo have inspired performers as diverse as Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles, who called themselves "The English Everly Brothers" and even fashioned the harmonies for "Please Please Me" after "Cathy's Clown". As Paul Simon recalled in "Rolling Stone" in 2004, "The Everly Brothers' impact exceeds even their fame. When Artie and I were kids we got our rock 'n' roll chops from the Everlys." The Everly Brothers were one of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and were inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.

From Quiz Sisters in Bands

Answer: The Shangri-Las

Sisters Mary and Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss paired up with identical twins Marguerite "Marge" and Mary Ann Ganser to form a band they named The Shangri-Las. They took the name from the name of a local Oriental restaurant. 8. Twin brothers Chuck and John Panozzo were the bass player and drummer for which Chicago-based rock band that later featured Tommy Shaw on guitar?

From Quiz Brothers in Bands

Answer: Styx

When they were teens Chuck and John Panozzo met a neighbor who played keyboards named Dennis DeYoung. The three of them formed the original nucleus of Styx in the early sixties, originally calling themselves The Tradewinds. Chuck joined a seminary but returned to the band in 1964 and switched from playing guitar to being the bass player. When a band named The Tradewinds broke nationally they decided on the name Styx. Several guitar players were in the band in the early lineups. In 1975 guitarist John Curulewski abruptly quit the band just before a scheduled tour and was replaced by Tommy Shaw. From Quiz 'O Brother, WHO Art Thou?' Musical Brother Acts

These included Joan Baez, the Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, Buffalo Springfield, Peter Paul & Mary and Pete Seeger. The show is also noted for an explosives accident involving The Who, though no one was seriously hurt. Despite continued high ratings, their variety hour was cancelled by CBS in 1969 for reasons that appear to be political. The brothers have continued to make individual sporadic acting appearances since then.

"Time Has Come Today" was released by The Chambers Brothers in 1968 and spent five weeks at number 11 on the Billboard Top 100 charts. Lester, Joe, Willie and George Chambers started in the gospel circuit in the southern U.S. in the early 1960s. They gradually entered the folk-rock community. Eventually they were signed by Columbia Records and produced their signature hit in 1968. The song was said to be ahead of its time in the way special effects were used in the recording. The sounds and effects were used to replicate the sounds of war (the Vietnam War at the time). The song was performed by the group at the original Woodstock Festival in 1969.
