Sweetness in Songs Trivia Questions

1. Which animated band had a big worldwide hit in 1969 with the bubblegum pop classic 'Sugar Sugar'?

From Quiz
Candy Pop Songs

Answer: The Archies

Written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, 'Sugar Sugar' was performed by the fictional animated band The Archies, who appeared on the popular cartoon 'The Archie Show'. 'Sugar Sugar' was not the first single released by The Archies, but it was by far the most successful. It is also widely considered to be one of the most commercially successful bubblegum pop singles of all time, reaching the top of the singles charts in the USA and UK. A group of session musicians were brought in to record the song as The Archies, using multi-track recording techniques to recreate the sound of the band from the television show. As well as being available in standard vinyl formats, a number of singles by The Archies were issued on the back of cereal boxes. These cardboard discs were embossed directly onto the back of the cereal box and could be cut out and played.

2. "Sweets For My Sweet" was the 1963 debut single for the British band The Searchers. Which US group originally had a Top Forty single release of the song two years earlier?

The songwriting team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman composed the song and Shuman played the piano on the recording. The Drifters' first single release was "Money Honey" in 1953 and they first hit the US Top Ten in 1959 with the Number Two single "There Goes My Baby" with Ben E. King on lead vocals. The Marcels had a 1961 hit with "Blue Moon". "If I Didn't Care" was a 1961 Top Forty for The Platters and The Coasters released "Little Egypt (Ying-Yang)" the same year.

From Quiz Sweet Tooth

Answer: I Want Candy

The Strangeloves were an interesting story. They were three musicians from New York (Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard Gottehrer) who pretended to be three guys from Australia named The Strange Brothers (Niles, Miles, and Giles). They actually had written some big hits prior to this such as "My Boyfriend's Back" (The Angels). In reality, they never recorded this song. It was done by some studio musicians, who ended up touring as The Strangeloves. The song itself was their biggest hit, peaking at number 11 on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 charts. They did have two other songs that actually reached Top 40 status in the U.S. Their album, also called "I Want Candy" was ultimately re-recorded with a new singer voicing over the tracks, and one of the songs became a big hit. The singer? Rick Derringer. The song? "Hang On Sloopy".

15. The controversial song "Sugar Walls" was a hit in 1984 for this lady from Scotland. Who was she?

Answer: Sheena Easton

The song came of her 1984 album "Private Heaven" and made it to number nine on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 charts as well as number one on the U.S. Dance charts. It didn't meet with as much success in the U.K., only reaching number 95. It reached the Top 20 in Canada. The song was written by rock icon Prince, under the pseudonym "Alexander Nevermind". The controversy was over the very lyrics which suggested sexual intercourse and the entering of a vagina. No graphic examples are necessary here. Suffice it to say that many stations would not play the song, and it was graphic enough to catch the attention of evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who made specific mention of the song on a number of his broadcasts at the time.

Though Gaye's version was a modest local success, it was Millie Small's 1964 recording of the song which would become a worldwide best-seller and is the most recognisable version of the song. Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, came across the song when he was looking for suitable tracks for his new signing, the Jamaican teenage singer Milly Small, to perform. The spelling of 'Lollypop' was altered to 'lollipop' for Small's rendering of the song. Not only is 'My Boy Lollipop' considered to be the first commercial ska hit, but it is also credited with launching the extremely successful career of Island Records.

They performed it live on 'Top of the Pops' and the 'Secret Vampire Soundtrack' EP, on which it featured, reached number twenty-five in the UK singles chart. Bis are probably best known outside the UK for providing the music for the closing credits of the popular cartoon series 'The Powerpuff Girls'.
