Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sweets for my sweet" - that song gave the title to this quiz. Which group chanted this?

Answer: Searchers

Yes, and it's "Sugar for my Honey". The Searchers had their first Number one hit in their native UK with this song.

Oh yes: the others are British, too.
2. What sweet pastry did the Beatles offer on their "White Album"?

Answer: Honey Pie

"Honey pie, you are driving me crazy". That song, done in the roaring twenties style, was released in 1968. There's also a second version, called "Wild Honey Pie".
3. "Sugar, pour a little sugar on it, honey Pour a little sugar on it, baby I'm gonna make your life so sweet, yeah yeah yeah! Pour a little sugar on it oh, yeah!" - who did sing about their "candygirl"?

Answer: Archies

US one hit wonder the Archies -actually a cartoon band- had their first and only UK Number one hit in 1969 with "Sugar, Sugar".

The other bands also made so called bubblegum music.
4. Where did Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs go to get some espresso? Can you name the song?

Answer: Sugar Shack

"Here's a crazy little shack beyond the tracks
And ev'rybody calls it the sugar shack" - and later on, the boy and girl get married.

The group didn't have much success, this song just scraped the British top 50.

I made the rest up.
5. What kind of sweet did Millie (Small) like? "My boy ..."?

Answer: Lollipop

"My boy lollipop,
You made my heart go giddy up.
You are as sweet as candy;
You're my sugar dandy."

Jamaican Millie had this one on the UK charts twice: the first time in 1964, as high as Number two, the next time in 1987, up to Number 46. I strongly suspect a commercial behind this.
6. You're walking through the sunny streets of Madrid and Peter Sarstedt offers to buy you one more...?

Answer: Frozen Orange Juice

"I'll buy you one more frozen orange juice
On this fantastic day
We'll walk the sunny hills of Madrid
Laughing all the way"

Peter Sarstedt had only two UK-chart appearances (both in 1969): a Number one with "Where do you go to (my Lovely)" and a Number ten with this one. I will never understand why it wasn't the other way round.
7. Now Peter and Gordon invite us "Sunday for tea". What will they serve?

Answer: Crumpets and jam

That's what they are planning in the song:
"Lettuce and ham
Or maybe crumpets and jam
Oh baby it'll be fun
Havin' a Sunday tea"

Everything delicious. You could first listen to it in 1967.

About the wrong answers: you'll find them in a lot of good tea-time cooking (or baking) books.
8. Some sweet dreams: "I wish I was an English muffin, 'bout to make the most out of a toaster. I'd ease myself down, comin' up brown... I prefer boysenberry more than any ordinary jam; I'm a 'citizens for boysenberry jam' fan" Can you remember this song?

Answer: "Punky's Dilemma", Simon & Garfunkel

From their 1968 LP "Bookends". He also wishes to be a Kellogg cornflake. The first time I ever heard of boysenberries!
9. Who sang with the following lines? "Sugarpie honeybunch You know that I love you I can't help myself"

Answer: Both

Motown Band the Four Tops had their first UK chart appearance with that tune in 1965.

There were a lot to follow.

I honestly don't know the Supremes version, but someone here told me about it.
10. The song is called "Les Bonbons". Which famous Belgian songwriter is responsible for this?

Answer: Jaques Brel

"Je vous ai apporté des bonbons
Parce que les fleurs c'est périssable
Les bonbons c'est tellement bon
Bien que les fleurs soient plus présentables
Surtout quand elles sont en boutons"

In this song he is courting a woman named Germaine. He brings her candy instead of flowers, they are more durable.

Outside Europe Jaques Brel songs are mostly known for their cover versions, done by Terry Jacks: "Ne me quitte pas" - "If you go Away" and "Le Moribond" - "Seasons in the Sun". If you get a chance, listen to the originals.

Hercule Poirot is Agatha Christie's master sleuth, the other two are French singers.

I hope you had fun!
