Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1980 At some time it was a good start in the charts to have won the Eurovision Song Contest. This one is from Ireland. Do you recognise the song by its lyrics? "I've been waiting, Such a long time Looking out for you But you're not here"

Answer: "What's Another Year?"/Johnny Logan

Johnny Logan did win three Eurovision Song Contests for Ireland:
as a performer in the year 1980 with "What's Another Year?" in The Hague, Netherlands and in 1987 in Brussels, Belgium with "Hold Me Now". While the first song was a number one tune, the 1987 song "only" reached up to two.
His third triumph in that field was as a composer of Linda Martin's winning song of 1992 "Why Me?". This song just bruised the British top 60.
"In Your Eyes" by Niamh Kavanagh was the Irish winner in 1993.
2. 1981 Due to the killing of John Lennon in December 1980, there were some of his songs in the charts at the beginning of 1981. There was "Imagine" in January, "Woman" in February and, sung by Roxy Music (written by Lennon), "Jealous Guy" in March. But between "Woman" and "Jealous Guy" you could find a very strange song. Who performed these unique lyrics, written down below? "Boy it make-a me sick, Everyting I gotta do I can'ta getta no kicks, Always gotta follow your rules"

Answer: "Shaddap You Face" Joe Dolce Music Theatre

This was the first and last time you heard of Signore Dolce. Both Adam and the Ants and the Human League had some chart history before they had both their first (and in case of Human League the only ever) number one hit in 1981.
Scottish singer Aneka was a one hit wonder, she only had one further top 50 ("Little Lady") song.
3. 1982 Which colourful band started in a restaurant, a court room and a swimming pool and in jail (I guess you've seen the video!)? I give you now the first lines of the song: "Give me time To realise my crime Let me love and steal I have danced inside your eyes How can I be real"

Answer: Culture Club

Strange, but true: Boy George (singer of Culture Club) did get out of the water without a single curl in a mess and with perfect make-up! He was supposed to be a kind of a ghost in the video. This was the beginning of a long lasting career.
4. 1983 The Flying Pickets had their first and most successful chart recognition with the song "Only You". Not only the fact that their first single was a number one hit -some lines are given below-, what else is to mention about this song? "Looking from a window above Is like a story of love Can you hear me? Came back only yesterday We're moving father away Want you near me? All I needed was the love you gave All I needed for another day And all I ever knew - only you"

Answer: All of these are correct

Alison Moyet and Vince Clark recorded the song in 1982 and had a number two with their version. The Flying Pickets specialize in singing - mostly cover versions- in the a-capella style. "Only You" reached the number one position on December, 10 and was piped away by Paul McCartney and his "Pipes of Peace" on January, 14 of the next year.

The group had two more hits: "When You're Young and in Love" and "Who's That Girl?" in the year of 1984.
5. 1984 The "Guinness Book of Hit Records" -Edition 16- describes the next band as: "international male/female vocal/instrumental charity assembly". I myself counted about 40 pop stars! Now who offered the biggest hit of the year, whose opening lines you can read below? "It's Christmastime, there's no need to be afraid At Christmastime, We let in light and we banish shade And in our world of plenty We can spread a smile of joy Throw your arms around the world At Christmastime"

Answer: Band Aid

Bob Geldof and Midge Ure wrote this song to help famine relief in Ethiopia. The song was recorded with the help of the best of pop at that time, like Paul Young, Spandau Ballet, U2, Boy George, Phil Collins, Bananarama and many more. Bob Geldof made most of the people come while it was produced by Midge Ure and Trevor Horn, the day being November 25 in 1984.

It was released on December 3 and reached the number one at December 15 and stayed there until January 19 when Foreigner took over. All in all it is said to have earned about eight million pounds. New versions, also for famine relief, were released in 1986 and 2005.
6. 1985 Phyllis Nelson had her huge success first in 1985, re-released in 1994 (not that high again). Can you name the song if I just give you the first lines? "Hey baby, you go your way And IŽll go mine But in the meantime When we're together Touchin' each other And our bodies do what we feel When weŽre dancin' Smoochin' and swayin' Tender love song softly playin' "

Answer: Move Closer

American Phyllis Nelson died in 1998, just 47 years old, of cancer. Her oldest son Marc got some fame as a producer (Boyz2men).
7. 1986 The 11th of January saw the first number one hit of a very busy duo. What is the song - see lyrics below- that was the starter for the Pet Shop Boys? "Too many shadows, whispering voices Faces on posters, too many choices If, when, why, what? How much have you got? Have you got it, do you get it, if so, how often? And which do you choose, a hard or soft option? (How much do you need?)"

Answer: West End Girls

After "West End Girls" Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe had three more number one hits in the 1980's: "It's a Sin" and "Always On My Mind" in 1987, "Heart" peaked the chart in 1988. Not to mention masses of other hits, which didn't score that high (but mostly top ten) but giving them enough to live happily.
8. 1987 That year saw a number one hit for a song with the title "Pump up the Volume" Who would perform this extraordinary lyric, given below? "Pump up the volume Pump up the volume Pump up the volume Brothers and sisters Pump up the volume WeŽre gonna need you"

Answer: M/A/R/R/S

That UK group was only one time in the charts before they disappeared again. That song was a double A-side with "Anitina (the First Time I See She Dance)" (And yes, I always turned down the volume as quick as possible!)
9. 1988 Irish singer Enya had her first big thing in 1988. In which of her songs do you find this travelling guide? "From Bissau to Palau - in the shade of Avalon, From Fiji to Tiree and the Isles of Ebony, From Peru to Cebu hear the power of Babylon, From Bali to Cali - far beneath the Coral Sea."

Answer: Orinoco Flow

"Storm in Africa Part II" was released in 1989, "Caribbean Blue" is from 1991 and "Club Tropicana" was - and least until 2006- never an Enya title. It is from Wham, 1983. The real name of Enya is Eithne Ni Bhraoanain. Don't ask me how to pronounce this, I'm German!
10. 1989 Three number one hits in one year can't be ignored. But which one was the first to be on the top? Where can you find these lines? "Come on everybody C-C-Come on everybody One-two-one-two One-one-one-one-one One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock rock Five, six, seven o'clock, eight o'clock rock Nine, ten, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock rock We're gonna rock around the clock tonight Put your glad rags on,join me hon"

Answer: Swing the Mood

1. "Swing the Mood" Number one in July 1989
2. "That's What I Like" Number one in October 1989
3. "Let's Party" Number one in December 1989
4. "That Sounds Good to Me" - the odd one out in a way, only a number four in 1990.

The method was always the same: some old songs new recorded and overlaid with a catchy tune. That worked for quite a while.

I hope you enjoyed the quiz. I'm sure you've got everything right.
