Richie grew up on the campus of Tuskegee Institute. His grandfather's house was across the street from the home of the president of the institute. He then accepted a tennis scholarship back at Tuskegee Institute and later graduated with a major in economics.

2. Lionel didn't begin his career as a solo artist - he was a member of a soul band. But can you name that band?

The Commodores were almost as popular as Lionel Richie himself, but Lionel went on to eclipse the success of the band who he was the lead singer of until 1982, when he began a hugely successful solo career.

3. Lionel Richie helped form one of the great soul groups towards the end of the 1960s while at the Tuskegee Institute. What was the name of this group?

From Quiz Lionel Richie: The Life

Answer: The Commodores

Richie taught himself to play the piano by ear and really matured as a performer and composer at Tuskegee. The group was called the Mystics at first, but later became the Commodores. This name was picked by randomly choosing a word out of the dictionary. The Commodores landed a series of club appearances and signed on with a manager, Benny Ashburn, who would stay with them until his death during Richie's solo years. They signed briefly to the Atlantic record label, but then they went to Motown.
